I have just changed a light fitting, however come across two extra wires when doing so. These were in the fourth socket of the old light, however, there is obviously only three sockets on the new light. The two wires are one red, and the other white and they seem to control the switch as when I reconnect the power, the lights work without the switch (and when switched off, the lights stay on). I have tried these extra wires in several different combinations however it doesn't seem to help.

Can you offer some advise,

Thanks kindly

I had exactly the same situation at the weekend - However  two red two black wires. Im not an electrician and as I now appear to have an afro (I would not take my advice as the best) . . . I had the plug socket switched off (the mains was on) discovered four wires the hard way when unwiring - received a small electric shock . . . then decided best to turn off the mains power, had a small battery and light bulb (from a torch) with which I managed to figure out the two wires going to the switch - when connected the switch caused the small bulb to go on and off (the other two obviously being live) . . . . . best advice of all is to get in a qualified electrician !!!
