"Americans and Japanese have basically friendly images of each other."

One question I have is whether or not you believe Japanese people have an accurate notion of what it means to be an American in the first place.  I'm an American (born and raised in the D.C. area) of Korean ancestry, and I've been living in Japan for almost one year through the MIT-Japan program.

I can understand why I might be confused for a Japanese person at first, but I don't understand or appreciate that people here tend not to believe me when I say I am American, even after I repeat myself 2 or 3 times.  Americans are not all white or black. Yet, somehow I get the feeling that Japanese people do not fully realize this.

So, when you say that Japanese people generally have a friendly image of Americans, do you believe that Japanese people have a good understanding of who Americans really are?

Like we in South Africa, I believe Japanese people like most other nations, think Americans are a bunch of arrogant idiots, so I geuss you must be a nice guy and therefor they cant link you with the American type.
