We have a 1 year old Shih Tzu/Lhasa Apsa, and every time that he urinates he licks it up. Why does he do this, and how can I stop it?

Sorry, but I have to answer your question with a question. Has the dog ever been abused? If so and as sad as it maybe, when a dog has been beaten for potty accidents then after a while they learn that they will be in grave trouble. The dog begins to try to cover up the mistake by licking it up. The dog may have been abused by the breeder and that could explain the cureous behavior. I recently rescued a 2 year old Lhasa Apsa from an abusive home my friend(Dog trainer) and I were sitting in my livingroom when the Lhasa began the potty behavior you are speeking of. She explained to me what and why he was doing it. --Angie

Your dog is just being a dog.You need to train him/her to go outside to pee but it might take them awhile because he/she is still a puppy. But if you dont start training them now they will never get used to goiing outside.

There are products you can buy to add to the dogs food that will make the urine fowl tasting and eliminate this problem. Also, you can give him/her a swift wack on the butt with a newspaper (never use your hand to disipline the dog) as soon as he is about to do it or immediately after. Good Luck.
