We have a 9-month-old male Rot.  He has never had a digging problem.  The only time he ever did any digging was after the termite control people dug a small trench around my house to bury the bug poison.  We have two Great Danes that live behind us.  The 2 Danes and our Rot love to play with each along the chain link fence.  Our Rot will sit at the fence and whine because he wants to play one-on-one with the Danes.  Still, he has never tried to dug to get to the Danes.

We live on 18 acres, mostly hillside.  Our two Rotties LOVE to dig.  There are moles that run through the property that attract the girls' attention.  They also love digging in the various compost piles (UGH!). As for digging under things, though, I've never seen them do that.  They also love rooting through the dirt with their noses.  Sometimes they are a real mess.

Usually dogs dig out of boredom. Get them a chew toy. My dog has been digging alot recently and i tried this. So far it has worked! You can also set a little place of land aside that they are allowed to dig in.

My Rottie turned two today and we have holes in various places around the yard. He is also a chewer. We bought a wooden futon frame and the arm rest was chewed the first day.

rotties also dig a shallow pit to lie in when it is very hot out, if you can, get a kiddie pool or something for them.
