We have a JRT (Sam), aged 18 months. He is neutered. Sam has recently become a bit 'bad tempered' - he has tried to 'nip' our 8 year old child a couple of times over the period since Christmas. Previously Sam was no problem. Sam seems very well, one of my bestfriends from Army days is a vetinarian (he says all OK), but we are worried as Sam has recently shown his bad side to us as well (sly nips of ankles/fingers etc).
We have a very big back yard area, and Sam gets regular walks many miles in country - we are on edge of town.
What to do?

Jack Russells can get "mouthy".  I have one that nips at us to get our attention. Try to get into the habit of giving a loud "Yipe" when your dog nips you.  This should sound like the sound another dog or puppy makes when it has been hurt.  This is doggie language for "ouch, don't do that"  I found that it can cure them real quick of doing this.  Have your child do the same thing.  Do this even if it doesn't hurt you because he needs to learn what it acceptable and what isn't.  Even playful nips on people shouldn't be acceptable because eventually play nips can get out of hand quick.
