I am about to purchase a Newfoundland dog.
Is grey a reputable, recognized color for a Newfoundland?  Should I pay the same amount for a grey Newfoundland that I would pay for a all black Newfoundland or a Landseer?

Although I am aware of several breeders who have gray Newfs, I do believe (if I'm not mistaken) that they are not recognized for show.

The blacks, landseers and browns are the only "show colors." (I think)

Since I am not considering showing or breeding any of my dogs, I would pay the breeders "pet only" price.

By that, I mean, that most breeders have one price for "pets" and another price if you want to breed or show.

The acceptable show colors are Black, Landseer, Gray and Brown.  This information is available on the AKC website - www.akc.org
These colors are not very common, as both parents have to carry a recessive gene, and then only 1 in 4 puppies will be gray or brown (depending on the color of the recessive gene).

Our breeder showed her greys in the states and got considerable recognition. She asked us if we wanted to show the grey male we purchased at a full price but we couldn't stand the thought of being away from him for weekend after weekend. Some dysplasia emerged from that breed line and she shut it down to protect the gene pool. But our boy lived to be 11 plus and was worth every single penny!

Where can I find a breeder with gray Newfies?  I would love to purchase one with the coloring like the dog in Finding Neverland.  I've searched the web extensively and I can't seem to find a breeder!

In Canada - grey is not acceptable colour, only Blacks & Landseers.
If the parents have all the necessary health clearances, you should pay the same price as any other Newfie "pet".
