I have a 4 year old yorkie who is having a bad time picking up his hind legs.  He used to be able to jump up on the couch and all over.  He now can make his front legs work but not his back legs.  Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?  We have had him at the vets and had xrays done and nothing was found.  Is this a normal problem with yorkies?

Barb,
I have an 11-month old male yorkie, and I just started seeing the same problem with him last week.  I was wondering if you ever found the cause of the problem.  Please let me know.  I'm very concerned.

Your yorkie may have bilateral luxating patellas which is a dislocation of the kneecaps that only occurs in the rear legs.  Your vet should be able to feel for it.  Xrays will not reveal that.  I would suggest you see a different vet.  Ask him to check the patellas of your yorkie.

Have you had his annal glands cleaned?  This can cause them to have a walking problem and also causes them to have a bad odor at their tail area.  This is a procedure that can be easily done if you can get someone to show you.  You can stand your Yorkie on a table, pull his tail towards his head, and use a paper towel and squeeze the sides of his rectum, the odor is awful and the color is a brownish color.  It makes them feel better if this is done.  I'm not a vet, but do all my shots, wormings, tail docking, removing dew claws, hair trimming and ear care.
