When a female dog is getting ready to go into heat her private area will start to swell and she will start spotting/bleeding if you want to save yourself from a mess it is best to get her a velcro puppy diaper they are available at petshops and liners are available for them.

Also don't jump into breeding but do as much research as possible first. It will vary greatly in dogs when they will allow breeding after these signs start. Some will breed the first day while others will wait three weeks! Not only that but the time they will allow breeding varys from 1-21 days! So now you have a variance of less than a week to over a month of the dog being in heat!!! Plus the parents both need to be unrelated and guaranteed healthy. Then you have to know how to tell your dog is pregnant, how to care for her, how long she's pregnant, how to tell she is "ready", know what to expect during labor so you are aware if something goes wrong and if it does you need to be prepared to 1.call the vets emergency number or 2. you may have to perform yourself if the vet can't get there soon enough. Then you have to know how to care for the pups and mom and if the mom won't feed or lick the pups then its your job! You also have to sell them all to good homes. These are only the basics of breeding and the minimum of information you should have before you breed. PLEASE be prepared do these preparations for your dog. Failure to do so can and has resulted in death. I know you don't want to do that! So good luck either way you do it. If you want any info at all email me and I will be more than happy to help. stanishas@aol.com  Bye!

shih tzus will begin spotting lightly to heavily almost right away. Some early signs are fatigue, trying to hump other animals, and constant licking of the vagina. Some dogs keep themselves extremely clean, so you will have to pay close attention. Shih tzus will breed usually on the 10th or 13th day after the first signs of spotting, and will not let the male "conquer" her until she is ready for him. When she is ready...whoah! Once the stud has done his job, put an "x" on the calendar. Within 2 weeks you will be able to tell if she is pregnant. My dog shows in about a week. It is smart to take your dog to the vet for an ultrasound about 4 weeks into the pregnancy to see how many puppies are there. This will help you when she goes into labor at about 61-64 days. If the dogs become "locked" together during mating, don't worry. Hold them together if you are concerned they are about to panic, but it is usually not necessary. Locking is a good thing. It means that 99.9% you'll have puppies (unless there is something wrong with either dog). Questions?

Breeding animals is COMPLETELY IRRESPONSIBLE when there are MILLIONS of homeless animals available. GREED and IGNORANCE are the main reasons for breeding. For every puppy bred a perfectly good dog/puppy who DESERVES a home is put to death.

Just this morning my puppy's private area was bleeding. And it has bled 4 times already. This means she is going into heat.Going into heat means your puppy is getting mature and wants to have puppy. If you don't get her spaded her hormones will drive her crazy. So the best thing to do is get your female puppy spaded.

The vagina will become swollen and she will lick it constantly.  It would be like a human having her period.

We have allowed our dogs to breed.  Our male dog never seemed to lock.  There was a lot of activity........but just not sure it was successful.  Is this a common problem?
