My chi is 8 months old and my son wants one of his own, We're thinking of maybe breeding her and keeping a pup. When is it safe to do so? I don't want anything to happen to her.

Breeding is never safe at any age they are always dangers,And if you just want one for your Son you would be better off to just buy him one,But if you still want to take the chance she should be over a year old her 2nd or 3rd heat will be best and never her first,She should be vet checked and over 4 lbs

I cannot state strongly enough that breeding chihuahuas is not for amateurs.  Unless a dog is part of a responsible breeding program, I strongly suggest that they be spayed/neutered, especially if they are female.

It takes a very knowledgeable person to pick dogs who represent the best of the breed standard and will not reinforce genetic defects. Even experienced breeders lose litters and dams, most chihuahua females are much too delicate to be bred.  The vet bills and small litter size make this a negative money maker, you will spend much more in proper care than you would by breeding her and selling the puppies.

Please Please Please do not risk your precious little girl.

Go ahead if you are determined.  However, my very good friend's boyfriend, an experienced breeder, just had a very bad outcome.  Not only were all the puppies born dead, but the dam (mother dog) had to have an emergency hysterectomy.  This was a dog who had better pre-natal care than a lot of human mothers and whose pregnancy was uneventful.  Please think hard whether this is a risk you want to take, when there are so many wonderful puppies already born and just waiting for a loving home.

OK, I have a question... What is the earliest age that a MALE chi is able to breed.

Around 6 - 8 months.  As soon as he shows an interest, he's able, however he may be shooting blanks for a few more weeks until sperm mature enough to make it into the ejaculate.

If your dog is not going to be used as a stud, I recommend having him neutered at around 6 months.  He won't miss the urge, and will be a much calmer and happier dog.  An intact male will want to mount any female in heat, which is really frustrating when you're a chihuahua but she's a german shepherd. :-)

this is a QUESTON
i have a 2 year old chihuahua and my boyfriends friend has a 10 month chihuahua and i was wondering if i could breed them together?

You could.  However, please don't.  If you want another chihuahua, please consider a rescue organization, shelter or responsible breeder.

Chihuahuas require a lot of veterinary care, you would likely spend a lot more than you could recoup by selling the pups.  You could also be setting the pups up for problems by breeding if you don't know the full health history of both parents.

unless your female has had her first heat and came into contact with a male no, but i would check with your vet in case it might be another more serious problem.

I have a question.  I have been breeding for 9 years and have been very careful about it.  I have had my boy dog to breed four girls and none has had babies this year.  He has been great in the past.  He is six years old.  What is going on with him.

I cant believe what I am hearing about breeding very young females. Please LEARN the breed before breeding... make sure you KNOW what you are doing before breeding. I would not breed any dogs unless if they are 2 to 3 years of age and please Xray your dogs hips/elbows or get your dogs check for any kind of common problems that the breed has.

Don't think by breeding that your going to make money because if thats your thinking of wanting to breed then you need another method of increasing your wallet or banking accounts because breeding is NOT the way to go.

I THINK THESE QUESTIONS ARE HORRIFYING!! WITH SO MANY CHI OWNERS THAT ARE NOT EDUCATED ENOUGH TO HAVE A PUPPY, DOG OR ANY ANIMAL AT ALL!! You have to educate yourself about the breed you are buying! And even children apparently get hold of chihuahuas. I guess their parents are the ones purchasing the chis for their babies.. What about waiting until they are old enough to buy one of their own with their own money!! or are the parents not educated at all before they get pregnant and give birth to a child and not aware that u cannot give a child responsibility over a Chihuahua just because the child is wining and crying and begging you to get one. Just because they have seen a celebrity having one on Television!! I shiver at the thought. I live in Scandinavia but I guess we have the same problems with uneducated people buying chi´s (or any animal). <poor pups! Iwant to say to the breeders who hopefully know all there is to know about Chihuahuas, don't sell your puppies to children even if the parent say she will take full responsibility!! You know they will not have enough time working and all for the little precious and delicate chihuahua sitting alone in the apartment or house crying for love!!!!

sorry my answer got so long

I have 2 chihuahua pomeranian mix pups. One is 1 and 1/2 and the other is 9 months. The older one is male and he keeps trying to hump the younger girl. I am afraid she might be pregnant. Her cuchi is all swollen and she is acting different. How can I tell if she is pregnant? Is it safe? What do I need to do for her if she is ? We are clueless....Do they need a special diet if they are pregnant??

I have a question,, My year and a half old Chihuahua is 7wks. pregnant, she is 5lbs, the male was 3 1/2 lbs.. I checked with the breeder of the female, and she told me none of her dogs have ever required a C Section,I know this is no guarantee my girl wont need one, but is heredity a determining factor at all? How much weight do you think it holds I guess is what I'm saying.. thanks, Tina

I have a question.  I have a female chi that is about 8 months old.  I think she is pregnant by my male chihuahua.  I'm very concerned about her labor because she has legg calve perthes disease.  Which will be treated after the pregnancy.  I talked to my vet about it and she said I should just watch her closely.  I already know this.  It's my first litter and I'm so scared something is going to go wrong.  I need every detail about chihuahua pregnancy I can get.  I don't want to lose my baby girl.  Help me please!!!

I have a 11 month old female chihuahua who hasn't had her first heat yet ( well at least I don't think so). I also have a 4 month old male chihuahua and I want them to breed but I don't want to any time soon. What should I do to avoid the pregnancy and how do I know my female is in heat because I don't think I noticed when she had her first heat since she is already 11 months.
