Corrupt .jpeg and .avi files

I have about 60 to 70 photos and movies that I have taken over the last year and saved to my local hard drive.
When I try to open any of the .jpeg or .avi files,
no matter what program I choose, they cant be viewed or played. I have Windows XP pro, service pack 1a installed and have tried everything but still cant open the files.
Can anyone help or suggest of a program, utility or anything else so I can recover these photos and movies ?

Thanks for the help !

i have a similair prob, i had to re-image my hdd a few days ago, and then realised that i'd blown away 100 or so photos, (i know, i should have backed 'em up, but i was waiting till i had enuff to fill a cd),anyway, i was able to get them back using a recovery prog' but now 50% are corrupt, i can see them as thumbnails, so i know the image is there, but PSP wont open them and ImageMagick gets an error regarding "two Soi's"  .... any help would be REALLY helpfull

try to scan your hard disk against file system errors or open the files with an hex-editor
