what were the main causes of the first world war

ok basically the causes for the first world war are simple. Think of it this way it was a domino effect starting with the serbian rebels killing the austrian-hungry heir to the throne, who knew they were trying to kill him because they had been trying for a while. iguess you could call it another fight over land. Anyways after his murder the alliance system came into play and such countries as Germany seemed to have jumped in quickly in order to benifit themselves. Inevitabley the US could only remain neutral for some time, because lets face it its the US. But it is felt that Wilsons decision was justified, though not by his idealistic fourteen points. The US needed to get involved due to many things including the salvation and expansion of democracy, unrerstricted German sub warfare (Luistiania) and several other combined problems causing many hostile feelings to arise. To learn how WWI started memorise the first couple sentences here and the alliances and just think dominos!

There where a number of causes

Britain and Germany were competing to have the most powerful navy in the world. This caused tension in Europe.

The Scramble for Africa (when European countries had tried to get as many colonies as they could) had led to many small conflicts around the world. This meant that some of the major European powers were not very friendly towards each other.

The French were very distrustful of the Germans as a result of the war in 1870-1871 that the Germans had won.

The alliance systems set up to prevent war meant that any major political disputes would inevitably lead to a large rather than a small conflict.

Nationalism. People across the world were very eager to let the rest of the world how strong and important their country was. Many people thought that their country was better than others: and thought that they'd be able to win a war very easily if there was one.

The Balkans region of Europe was claimed by both Russia and Austria (it was in general under Austrian control). This meant that the Russians and the Austrians would both be eager to enforce their authority over this region.

A desire for independence. Many people in Europe lived in countries that were part of empires. They didn't all like being ruled by people with different languages and religions and this led to conflicts that could (and did) involve other nations.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. He was the heir to the Austrian throne and was murdered by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip. This was the spark that caused war to be declared.

hey,
well the reason for world war one isn't simply the assasination of the archduke, it was a build up of nationalism, the rise of imperialism, the arms race and most importantly the alliance system.

The conflict resulting from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinard should have been local and confined but due to a series of factors, militarism, the alliance system, nationalism, this one incident led to the greatest war Europe had ever seen. As a result of underlying hostilities the assassination led to a chain of events that ensured war on a wide scale.without any of this happening then world war one would be out of our heads

It was for the conquest of what was then the Ottoman Empire. The Western powers wanted this region's resources such as oil as well as the usual plundering that colonialism always includes.

Germany had been a late-comer in the European colonial race to gobble up the rest of the world which other players like Spain and Portugal had started long before. Germany wanted to engage the other western super powers of the early 20th century - mainly England, but also others, for their "fair share of the pie."  And don't forget about the Hapsburg empire on Germany's side.

If you mean world war 1 where england also got involved then there is one more important cause.

1839 - A treaty signed by all powers (not including Germany but Prussia) not to attack Belgium

later on (not sure when) Treaty signed again by all powers including Germany

When Germany was using the Schieffler plan against France they also tried invading Belgium for the "Channel Ports" this also was a cause, if Germany had the channel ports england would have lost.

Apart from that if England did not help France it would look cowardly.

World War I started for a number of reasons; their was a growing tension in Europe due to the alliance system putting pressure on countries. Added to this was the child like jealousy of Kaiser Wilhem who began a frantic naval race with Britain in order to make more dreadnoughts. You then had the rivalries that already existed, such as France and Germany.

But the spark that started it all off was the assassination of Franz-Joseph Ferdinand in Austria-Hungary by a Serbian nationalist called Gavrilo Princip.

Industrialization is another example of a nationalist-motivated cause of World War One which also led to militarism. Industrialization started to occur in the eighteenth century and continued through to the turn of the twentieth century. Countries industrialized at varying times for example Britain was the first country to undergo an industrial revolution whilst Russia was the slowest of the major European powers to industrialize which affected their military strength and their ability to mobilise. Nationalism had a major influence on industrialization because countries battled to have the strongest military and to do this needed mass production and industrialization. The classic example of this was the naval-orientated battle for supremacy of the seas between Britain and Germany. The specialisation that occurred due to industrialisation meant that the production of the Dreadnought was rapid as both empires attempted to out build each other through effective industrialization through mass production. This is a perfect example of the direct connection between nationalism and industrialization. German and British nationalists used industrialization to satisfy the wants of the nation. Thus, nationalism motivated the use of industrialization and this further shows that nationalism stimulated the other main causes of World War One and was the main cause of the war.

Nationalism was a main cause behind the fierce and aggressive arms race that developed leading up to World War One. The arms race, also known as militarism and can be defined as, "a preference for force as a solution to problems"[7] and involves increases in military expenditure, military and naval upgrades and an overall emphasis on the military as a form of defence or attack. As feelings of nationalism swept across Europe in the late nineteenth century, all the major powers began to feel suspicious about other countries and thus relied on military power to protect them against any attacks from other countries. Between the years 1870 and 1914 military expenditure of the major powers increased 300% illustrating the suspicion and doubt that surrounded Europe at that time.

The Black hand was a group of terrorists who went round ruining peoples lives in the early 1900's.
This group of terrorists had been trying to kill Franz Ferdinand the heir to the throne of Austria Hungary for a long while and on the day of June the 14th when the heir was on a special tour the black hand began to throw bombs near Franz Ferdinands form of transport (a car) and began to shoot guns and rifles aimed at both him and his wife.
The group of terrorists hit their target and in no time both the heir and his wife were dead.
Austria Hungary blamed Serbia for the assasssination and gave them a ultimatum.
Serbia did not stick to this ultimatum and on the 28th June 1914 Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia!!!!!

A-alliances...because they were used to minipulate other countries

I-imperialism...competition for colonies causes tension throughout Europe..many European countries were fighting over land and territories.

N-nationalism...Serbia...the main reason the war was being fought...took too much pride in their little nation..and other countries did too...

Basically the reason the war started is because Austria-Hungry was mad Gavrilo Princip for assassinating there Archduke Franz Ferdinad.  So they went to war though at first they didn't want to go in because Russia was an ally to serbia and Austria-Hungary wouldn't go to war without the help of Germany.  Germany agreed to help and the first World War began.

-A- Alliances between countries setting making enemies because all of the countries one was connected to, automatically took up their enemies
-I- Imperialism was upsetting many overtaken nations and created competition between major countries for land to imperialize

Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany was Queen Victoria’s grandson. Lot’s of the royal families in Europe were related by marriage, but all of the countries wanted to be more powerful than each other. The British navy was the strongest of all the countries, but when Germany started to expand its navy, Britain felt threatened. France and Germany had already been enemies for a long time.
Central Europe was dominated by Germany and Austria-Hungary, an empire of lots of different nationalities. The Czar ruled Russia, which was another empire with different nationalities.
Russia, Britain and France were allied, and were called the ‘Triple Entente’. Germany and Austria-Hungary were allied, and were called the ‘Triple Alliance’.
Tension was building between the countries. When Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian throne, was assassinated in Bosnia by a Serbian terrorist, it started the fighting. Austria-Hungary launched an attack on Serbia and Russian armies moved to defend Serbia. Then Germany attacked Russia’s ally, France, and Britain declared war on Germany after they went through Belgium, which was a neutral country.
It was only in 1917 that it became a world war, when America joined against Germany.

The causes of the first world war are thus:Germany upset the balance of power in Europe and new alliances were formed to cope with Germany.Bismark fell from power and Germany adopted a nationalistic approach. The race for Africa and bits of Asia ensued and tensions rose Even higher.Naval races , arms races and colonial races were opportunities to show their national superiority.Alliances were formed and the only needed a trigger to set both sides into a world war that nobody would know the consequences of , due to the increases in technology that nobody had tested in a war situation.(e.t.c gas, machine guns, airplane)

THE CAUSES OF THE GREAT WAR

There were several causes leading up to the First World War, otherwise known as the Great War. Some of them were long term causes, hatred that had been built up over many years, just waiting for the right moment to strike. Others were short term causes, things that had happened suddenly which were used as sparks to set off a great fire.
So it was not a surprise, seeing as all the countries in Europe had so much tension between them, when war broke out. It started with the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian empire. He was assassinated on 28th June 1914 by nineteen year old Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian Black Hand freedom fighter.

There were several long term causes for the First World War that historians have categorized into four different groups. The most important one was Nationalism, meaning thinking your country is better than others. This is a very important point because it caused hatred, rivalry, and also arrogance among countries making them feel more superior towards other nations. It also brought fascism to a nation and promoted patriotic people to fight for their country.
The other main cause is imperialism which means nations that were greater than others felt the right to rule over them. So nationalism would then lead to imperialism, which caused conflict among the countries as each had dreams to conquer one another to make a colony. This reason also boosted people’s morale to fight so that they could get the products from another country and so become richer and more powerful.
Militarism was another factor for war. Each country was having a race to see who could build the greatest armies and navies. If one country were to have too big an army or navy the other countries would get scared and start building more to defend themselves. An example of a person obsessed with militarism was Kaiser Wilhelm, the monarch of Germany during the time. Kaiser Wilhelm had always been jealous about Britain’s navy and he put in a lot of money to build his own when he became king. Come  each country was ready for war and since the cost of a fleet of ships and ammunitions were so high, each country was expecting to use it.
Alliances were the final factor that pulled the European countries to war against another. There were two opposing sides: the Triple Alliance which included Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy, and the Triple Entente which involved France, Russia and Great Britain. This brought the countries to war because when one country got pulled into war, the others were obliged to follow. So when Austria-Hungary declared war against Serbia the countries toppled over one another into war, otherwise known as the ‘Domino effect’.

the main causes of world war one was , imperialism, militarism, nationalism, and alliances. imperialism started a scramble for colonies in the 1800's, militarism caused to aggressively build up the nations forces for preparation of war. the great powers of Europe, Austria, France, Germany, great Britain and Russia to end by it. nationalism caused the countries for longing of an ethnic minority. it usually occurred in countries with diverse populations. it often led to violence as well. America couldn't believe that all these beautiful countries with such great cultures could be at war with one another. some American's even felt physically involved. more then one third of the 92 million people were first or second generation immigrants. German and Irish American's felt hostility towards great Britain because of the current war in Europe and they had also had past conflicts. during the break out of world war 1 there was a peace movement, made up mostly of women.

The Moroccan Crisis 1905
The Kaiser was unhappy at the Anglo-French Entente, signed in 1904. He wanted to test the strength of this new relationship and decide to use the situation in Morocco to provoke a crisis in which Britain would abandon France.
France wanted more control over Morocco but Germany wanted to prevent this. In 1905 on a visit to the area the Kaiser supported the independence of Morocco. An international conference was held to discuss the independence of Morocco in Algeceras, 1906. At the conference Britain supported France so Germany could not prevent France taking more control over Morocco. This made Germany angry and humiliated. It also made Germany feel slightly afraid because it was beginning to be surrounded by hostile countries, thats why it felt it needed to support her only ally Austria Hungary at all costs. Britain began to fear Germany thinking she was far too aggressive.

The Bosnian Crisis 1908-9
Turkey was a faced with a revolution of army officers called the Young Turks. Whilst Turkey was busy dealing with this problem Austria Hungary came and took over Bosnia, which previously had belonged to the Turkish Ottoman Empire. This made Serbia angry because she had wanted Bosnia for herself. Germany supported her ally Austria Hungary and Russia backed Serbia. But Germany forced Russia to back  down. This convinced Russia that she needed to build up her army so that she could stand up to Germany in the future.

The Moroccan Crisis 1911
Germany grew angrier about the way France was increasing her influence in Morocco especially when she started sending troops over. Germany felt that if France was gaining more colonies then Germany should do so too. As a threatening gesture Germany sent a warship Panther into the harbor at Agadir, demanding a share in the French Congo. Again France and Britain stood up to Germany, they gave Germany a useless strip of tropical jungle in the Congo which Germany had to be satisfied with. This made Germany feel humiliated again and angry and made the friendship between France and Britain grow even stronger. It also convinced them that Germany was an aggressive power not to be trusted.

The Balkan Wars 1912-13
Three Balkan countries Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia attacked Turkey in the hopes of gaining land owned by the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. Serbia captured land and doubled in size. This angered Austria Hungary who was right next to Serbia and felt a bit threatened that she would try and expand over their soil.
A second Balkan war broke out and at the end of this war at the peace conference Serbia was forced to give back some of the land she had captured. Therefore Serbia and Austria Hungary started to see each other as Direct threats.
A-H feared their empire would start to get attacked and Serbia believed that she would never get to increase her lands whilst A-H stood in her way. Both countries were on the brink of war but both had powerful allies to help them.

the first world war was a complex event that arose due tensions between the European powers.how ever these e tensions came about as a result of a number of circumstances such as the Balkan hostilities, the economic rivalry between the European powers especially Germany and Britain, the naval and arms race, colonial rivalry, foreign policies of the European powers which were based on suspicion against other powers, the system of alliances which divided Europe into two armed camps.all these were to be finally triggered by the Sarajevo assassination.

All you have to do is just remember MAIN.
M stands for militarism, meaning countries started to build up their armies for show and for fear.

A stands for alliances.  Many countries had made alliances with other countries saying if they were involved in war, they would agree to help them fight.  This led to the whole world fighting then just two or three countries.

I stands for impearlism.  Many countries were trying to build up their economies and land, and resent for who had what, was making countries angry.

N stands for nationalism.  Basically, people started to care about their country.  People wanted to be the best and whatever their country was involved with, it was personal.

Just remember this word trick and you'll have your 4 MAIN reasons for war world two!

Okay, the first world war all started by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. After he died the Austrians started to blame it on the Serbians. So then Austria declared war on Serbia. Belgrade in Serbia was then shelled. Then Russian army got ready to help Serbia defend itself against the Austro-Hungarian attack.

The main cause of World War One was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand!
Also the countried formed to different alliances: the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance.

As you all know the assasination of Archduke Franz was one of the major causes because Serbia did not want to be under control of Austria- Hungary, as well because of nationalism, rise of imperialism, arms race and the really important factor is the many alliances such as the alliance between Britain, Russia and France which is known as the Triple Entent and than there is the Triple Alliance made of Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. Not only those alliances but also the one between Russia and Serbia and lets not forget a really important one that sparked a lot of tension was the alliance between Belgium and England, this one was secrete no one knew. That is why when Germany invaded France through Belgium it caused for England to get involved.

M-militarism(stronger armies)
A-alliances(well, simply alliances with countries)*
I-imperialism-(when stronger nations dominate other smaller countries for land.)
N-nationalism-(high national pride)

*think of alliances this way in terms for the war. you and your sister are very close(2 countries). your sisters friend(another country) is saying bad things about her. you stand up for your sister by knocking some sense into her. (declaring war)

Imperialism - germany'scompanies wanted more materials, so germany needed to conquer
Nationalism - germany and france hated each other, and many areas inside the hungarian empire wanted to be important

There are other cause, All began in 1860s when a Kingdom called Prussia decided to Unite Germany; France the neighbouring country was unhappy, they went to war against Prussia (1870-1871). France was defeated and German Unification took place under the leadership of Bismarck and Kaiser William I. Europe was never the same again.
Bismarck encouraged a relationship between Germany and Russia. These ensured that France remained isolated. When Germany industrialised the economy  rises and rises and became stronger, producing a big power for it,
Germany got a new Kiser (Wilhelm II) in 1888, he saw no need to stay friendly with Russia, then he ended their relationship. Wilhelm II had a aggressive foreign policy, the other countries(Russia, France, Britain) saw Germany as a threat. Germany was equal as Britain in terms of wealth and industry, the Kaiser decided create a worldwide empire.

The Berlin to Baghdad railway was being built so the Germans could get easier access to oil for its industries.

The British knew the German industrial superiority threatened its military (particularly naval) superiority. The only way to stop the Germans was to limit their access to oil. Hence the UK and France occupied Iraq and forced Germany into war in Europe.

well your facts are right just it was bit more than all of that it dated back to 1870 and there weren't just the short term causes most people have listed there were long term causes short term causes and immediate causes.
The immediate causes were the assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand and the proposal that Austria hungry sent to Serbia (where Serbia agreed to all the terms except for one)(they only had 24 hours to agree to all the terms) then they declared war on Serbia.
The Short term causes were the Balkan wars and the morocco crisis.
Then you have the long term causes like imperialism, nationalism, militarism, the alliance systems (the triple entente of Britain and it colonies France and its colonies and Russia, and the triple alliance of Germany, Austria-hungry and Italy) and the Franco-Prussian war.

The causes of world war one are:
1) M - Militarism - The competition to build up the strongest and most powerful army
2) A - Alliances - Friends of Germany and Serbia getting involved and making the war a larger conflict than it should have been
3) I - Imperialism - Some countries were competing for more land and power over other countries and some countries wanted freedom from other countries. This created tension.
4) N - Nationalism - some countries thought they were much better than everyone else and they didn't mind going to war because the 'knew' they would win
5) S - Significant individuals - The murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and also Kaiser Wilhelm who encouraged the war.

basically there are a range of reasons that caused the world war. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand did trigger the war and was the final spark that set the war alight. If that hadn't of happened sooner or later something would have made a country/countries annoyed and the war would have started. It was a continuous fight for power!

The causes to the first world war were basically classified into an easy way to remember which is MAIN.
Militarism
Alliances
Imperialism
Nationalism
Each of these categories could not have happened if it wasn't for the trigger, of these events, which was the assassination of the Arch Duke of Austria-Hungary at Sarajevo. Without this trigger, those four main events would have never happened and possibly the war could have been evaded.

There are many causes: the very one that I think was the most significant was the assasination Of the archduke, Franz Ferdinand.

His assasination was the spark that ignited the number of tensions in europe.

1.WAR PLANS
2.RIVAL EMPIRES
3.ALLIANCES
4.PATRIOTISM'S
5.THE KAISER
6.THE ARMS RACE

these are six of the tensions in Europe that made up the barrel of exploseives that soon to be ignited by the spark of The assasination at Sarajevo.

This was the spark that caused war to be declared.

ok basically the causes for the first world war are simple. To learn how WWI started memorise the first couple sentences here and the alliances and just think dominos!

here are the causes in five steps
1. Murder of heir to austrian hunry throne by a monster created by the serbians
2. The national need to protect themeselves from such man made creatures
3. Anti-Serbian animation coming to life and murdering people
4. Germany's on Serbia's side
5. No one likes Germany

The conflict resulting from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinard should have been local and confined but due to a series of factors, militarism, the alliance system, nationalism, this one incident led to the greatest war Europe had ever seen. As a result of underlying hostilities the assassination led to a chain of events that ensured war on a wide scale.without any of this happening then world war one would be out of our heads

t was for the conquest of what was then the Ottoman Empire.

There were many causes of the 1st world war, the one I think is the most important however is the assassination of Franz Ferdinand (no not the band!) After the Serbian terrorist group- The Black Hand, murdered him and his wife, Austria- Hungary had every right to invade Serbia as Ferdinand was their heir to the throne.
Another of the reasons was the Naval arms race, this was a race between the English and the German to build as many dreadnought ships as possible, this created tension in Europe. There were many others such as the build up of nationalism, the alliance system and the rise of imperialism.

The Austro-Hungarians wanted Bosnia in their empire, but Serbia wanted Bosnia in their empire. Serbia wanted Bosnia but if Austria-Hungary gave Bosnia its independence, other smaller countries in the Austro-Hungarian empire would want independence too, and a civil war in Austria-Hungary would brake out. A similar thing happened years later in the 1990s, the War of Former Yugoslavia, Croatia wanted Bosnia to be independent, and not be part of Yugoslavia, but Serbia wanted Bosnia to stay part of Yugoslavia.

the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austria-Hungary. A Serbian terrorist group called the Black Hand.
Nationalism was another cause for the Great War in Eroupe. The Allaince system was another cause, the rise of imperilism, and the arms race.

The main causes of world war one are:
* Tension between Britain and Germany (due to
Germany being jealous of Britain's navy.
Then   alliances were formed: Germany with
  Italy and  Austria-Hungary, Britain with
  France and  Russia)
* The assassination of the Arch-Duke Franz
Ferdinand (heir to the Austrian throne,

* Nationalism(people across the world wanting
to prove how strong their country was,
therefore, due to this patriotism, nations
objectives came in conflict with each
other. Each nation figured their country
  could win a war)
* Rivalry for control of the Balkans(Russia
