why did Australia become involved in world war 2?

During the 1930s, Germany was expanding its territory. In 1939, it threatened to invade Poland. Britain and France both warned that if Germany invaded, they would declare war. Germany did invade on 1 September in the same year, and two days later, Britain and France declared war. Australia still had strong ties with Britain, and was thought of as a British Nation. People in Australia were opposed to German expansion, but they were also very closely tied to Britain. When the British Government declared war, Prime Minister Menzies announced that Australia was also at war. Prime Minister Menzies said this statement regarding the German invasion of Poland and the declared war. This was recorded on a radio broadcast: "It is my melancholy duty to inform you officially that, in consequences of a persistence by Germany in her invasion of Poland, Great Britain had declared war upon her and that, as a result, Australia is also at war."

i actually agree with gem. She has a lot of key points which happened but she forgot to put in the holocaust. The holocaust was another one of these things which happened during world war 2 and it plays a very big role. This whole thing started with world war 1. After world war 1 there was a treaty that was signed between Germany and Great Britain to say that there will be no more fighting and wars between them. But then Hitler came into power in 1933?(i think it was)which changed the way Germans and other Europeans lived. He started with the killing of the Jews, gypsies, Jehovah's witnesses and many other people who were not German. Then Hitler gained the treaty and tore it up, and invaded Poland this is when world war 2 came along. in September 1st Germany invaded Poland without any warning, and on September 3rd Britain and France were at war with Germany. A week later Australia, New Zealand, Canada and south Africa got involved. World war 2 involved every major country in a war for global domination at it end. more then 60 MILLION people died which is way more then all the Jews and so called abnormal people that died in the holocaust. Germany which was ran by Hitler wanted to expand its territory so they started invading other countries. The main reason why everyone goes to war is because of their alliances that they have with other countries eg. our alliance that we have with Britain, New Zealand's alliance that they have with us. don't you see if china makes war with great Britain then the Americans get involved the Kiwis get involved and the Australians get involved, and plus all the Asian countries will probably go on China's side. i really think that peoples should not go to war its not going to rove anything and the Indians and Pakis should stop scaring each other with their nuclear bombs because all its going to do is blow each others countries up and by the time they actually claim a country they wouldn't want to have it because it is so destroyed. AND I HONESTLY THINK THAT AUSTRALIA SHOULD NOT BE IN IRAQ THIS IS AMERICAS WAR NOT OUR IT DOESN'T MATTER IF WE HAVE AN ALLIANCE WITH THE AMERICANS.

Hitler was an evil man with evil intentions. He blamed the Jewish for what was done to him earlier in his life. The Holocaust cost millions of people lives and i have recently come back from a play called "the girl who lived" where i played major part. We had to study the Holocaust and go to museums and learn Polish, Yiddish the language of the people. No if any one in any way disgraces this as being some stupid history lesson, you seriously need a big fat reality check. this happened to Germany and Poland in the 1930's and 1940's and it is something we must never forget. It is probably one of the most important parts of history. Any one dissing it will b sent to their watery graves. It's just not on. Anyway, "The girl who lived" was a play about certain characters sharing their stories and about one frail girl who could have not been more than 15, surviving the gas chambers at Auschwitz. They got her out of the gas chambers and then they shot her. It's a sad story. NO BODY SHOULD BE MAKING FUN OF THE HOLOCAUST BECAUSE IT IS THE MOST HORRIFYING DISPLAY OF HUMANITY THIS WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. CHECK THAT ASSHOLES. for those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it. " You have no right to live among us as Jews. You have no right live among us. have you heard this of this poem "crap face" "In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. This is one of the most famous poems written about the war! so, Crapface, maybe you need to read the last three lines.."If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields." That means..if you dont believe in us sending us to war was a waste, they watched their friends die, can you imagine that happening to you, i dont think so! Imagine how their familes felt nowing their father or husband died for some people who dont appreciate them or respect them! You dont deserve any peace in your life if you cant see the pain and suffering all these people went through and appreciate them.

answer to laura's comment on world war two. to show respect to the soldiers of world war two, do you expect to not speak about their reasons for dying? It is widely known that world war two was disgracful and inhumane, however this does not mean that we mustn't speak of it. Every single person who has completed high school knows the tortures australian & OTHER soldiers went through during the horrible time. Speaking of such experiences does not, however, make a peson a disgrace. Laura, i cannot believe you called the person whom asked the question "why was australia involved in world war 2?" a disgrace. A disgrace for merely asking for knowledge of the exact things you told him to research. Laura it is clear that you, yourself should learn manners & the war was over 40 years ago, its about time you released your anger. It's not doing anyone any good.
