Fred Cohen created his first virus when studying for a PhD at the University of Southern California. He added his virus to a graphics program called VD that was written for a make of mini-computer called a Vax. He then presented his results to a security seminar on 10 November, 1983.

1974 John Walker on a UNIVAC 1100

http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/univac/animalsrc.html

http://www.fourmilab.ch/documents/univac/pervade.html

http://www.viruslist.com/eng/viruslistbooks.html?id=16

Periodically on the mainframes at that period of time there appeared programs called "the rabbit". These programs cloned themselves, occupied system resources, thus lowering the productivity of the system. Most probably "rabbits" did not copy themselves from system to system and were strictly local phenomena - mistakes or pranks by system programmers servicing these computers. The first incident which may be well called an epidemic of "a computer virus", happened on the Univax 1108 system. The virus called "Pervading Animal" merged itself to the end of executable files - virtually did the same thing as thousands of modern viruses do.

The first computer virus is said to have taken birth in 1981 and was called the 'Elk Cloner'.It started on Apple II computers. The virus attached itself to the boot sector of diskettes to which there were calls. It showed itself in many ways - turned over the display, made text displays blink and showed various messages. It displayed a little rhyme on the screen:
It will get on all your disks
It will infiltrate your chips
Yes it's Cloner!
It will stick to you like glue
It will modify ram too
Send in the Cloner!

Some ppl believe the origin or Computer Viruses to be in Pakistan, by brothers Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi who made the 'Brain' virus... but actually it came much later in 1986.This virus took to the world majorly because of the unpreparedness of computer society to such a phenomenon. This virus was a famous one... but it wasnt the first.

While Babbage was one of the pioneers in the field of machines, it was just that - A machine.
The thing he made was nothing but a very basic calculator, as much of a computer as an electrical toothbrush.
As for the abacus, I fail to see how you can relate this - http://www.scri.fsu.edu/~odyssey/cyberkids/computers/history/abacus_large.gif - To a machine, let alone a computer.

Bill Gates came out with the first computer virus.  I believe it was called windows.  It would quickly spread through any given system and eat up all its resources with these so called "upgrades" that were pointless and redundant.  Its acctually still around today believe it or not.  you better watch out or you might get it.

In the closing days of the second world war, a truck left Ginger carrying a mysterious machine marked with the code word V4. After an adventurous journey, the machine ended up hidden in a cellar near the Austrian border.

I don't know but still it isn't helpful i needed to know WHO INVENTED THE FIRST COMPUTER                                                                                                                                          computer is a device for making calculations or controlling operations that are expressible in numerical or logical terms. It is used for many things typing, information, games, music and more. The meaning of the word computer has changed but has always lagged behind the capabilities of machines in use at time. The word was originally used to describe a person who performed arithmetic’s calculations and this usage is still valid. The OED2 lists the year 1897 as the first year the word was used to refer to a mechanical calculating device. By 1946 several qualifiers were introduced by the ODE2 to differentiate between the different types of machine. These qualifiers include analogue, digital and electronic. However, form the context of citation, it is obvious these terms were in prior use to 1946.

Theories for self-replicating programs are first developed.
1981
Apple Viruses 1, 2, and 3 are some of the first viruses “in the wild,” or in the public domain. Found on the Apple II operating system, the viruses spread through Texas A&M via pirated computer games.
1983
Fred Cohen, while working on his dissertation, formally defines a computer virus as “a computer program that can affect other computer programs by modifying them in such a way as to include a (possibly evolved) copy of itself.”
1986
Two programmers named Basit and Amjad replace the executable code in the boot sector of a floppy disk with their own code designed to infect each 360kb floppy accessed on any drive. Infected floppies had “© Brain” for a volume label.
1987
The Lehigh virus, one of the first file viruses, infects command.com files.
1988
One of the most common viruses, Jerusalem, is unleashed. Activated every Friday the 13th, the virus affects both .exe and .com files and deletes any programs run on that day.
MacMag and the Scores virus cause the first major Macintosh outbreaks.
1990
Symantec launches Norton AntiVirus, one of the first antivirus programs developed by a large company.
1991
Tequila is the first widespread polymorphic virus found in the wild. Polymorphic viruses make detection difficult for virus scanners by changing their appearance with each new infection.
1992
1300 viruses are in existence, an increase of 420% from December of 1990.
The Dark Avenger Mutation Engine (DAME) is created. It is a toolkit that turns ordinary viruses into polymorphic viruses. The Virus Creation Laboratory (VCL) is also made available. It is the first actual virus creation kit.
1994
Good Times email hoax tears through the computer community. The hoax warns of a malicious virus that will erase an entire hard drive just by opening an email with the subject line “Good Times.” Though disproved, the hoax resurfaces every six to twelve months.
1995
Word Concept becomes one of the most prevalent viruses in the mid-1990s. It is spread through Microsoft Word documents.
1996
Baza, Laroux (a macro virus), and Staog viruses are the first to infect Windows95 files, Excel, and Linux respectively.
1998
Currently harmless and yet to be found in the wild, StrangeBrew is the first virus to infect Java files. The virus modifies CLASS files to contain a copy of itself within the middle of the file's code and to begin execution from the virus section.
The Chernobyl virus spreads quickly via .exe files. As the notoriety attached to its name would suggest, the virus is quite destructive, attacking not only files but also a certain chip within infected computers.
Two California teenagers infiltrate and take control of more than 500 military, government, and private sector computer systems.
1999
The Melissa virus, W97M/Melissa, executes a macro in a document attached to an email, which forwards the document to 50 people in the user's Outlook address book. The virus also infects other Word documents and subsequently mails them out as attachments. Melissa spread faster than any previous virus, infecting an estimated 1 million PCs.
Bubble Boy is the first worm that does not depend on the recipient opening an attachment in order for infection to occur. As soon as the user opens the email, Bubble Boy sets to work.
Tristate is the first multi-program macro virus; it infects Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.
2000
The Love Bug, also known as the ILOVEYOU virus, sends itself out via Outlook, much like Melissa. The virus comes as a VBS attachment and deletes files, including MP3, MP2, and .JPG. It also sends usernames and passwords to the virus's author.
W97M.Resume.A, a new variation of the Melissa virus, is determined to be in the wild. The “resume” virus acts much like Melissa, using a Word macro to infect Outlook and spread itself.
The “Stages” virus, disguised as a joke email about the stages of life, spreads across the Internet. Unlike most previous viruses, Stages is hidden in an attachment with a false “.txt” extension, making it easier to lure recipients into opening it. Until now, it has generally been safe to assume that text files are safe.
“Distributed denial-of-service” attacks by hackers knock Yahoo, eBay, Amazon, and other high profile web sites offline for several hours.
2001
Shortly after the September 11th attacks, the Nimda virus infects hundreds of thousands of computers in the world. The virus is one of the most sophisticated to date with as many as five different methods of replicating and infecting systems. The “Anna Kournikova” virus, which mails itself to persons listed in the victim's Microsoft Outlook address book, worries analysts who believe the relatively harmless virus was written with a “tool kit” that would allow even the most inexperienced programmers to create viruses. Worms increase in prevalence with Sircam, CodeRed, and BadTrans creating the most problems. Sircam spreads personal documents over the Internet through email. CodeRed attacks vulnerable webpages, and was expected to eventually reroute its attack to the White House homepage. It infected approximately 359,000 hosts in the first twelve hours. BadTrans is designed to capture passwords and credit card information.
2002
Author of the Melissa virus, David L. Smith, is sentenced to 20 months in federal prison. The LFM-926 virus appears in early January, displaying the message “Loading.Flash.Movie” as it infects Shockwave Flash (.swf) files. Celebrity named viruses continue with the “Shakira,” “Britney Spears,” and “Jennifer Lopez” viruses emerging. The Klez worm, an example of the increasing trend of worms that spread through email, overwrites files (its payload fills files with zeroes), creates hidden copies of the originals, and attempts to disable common anti-virus products. The Bugbear worm also makes it first appearance in September. It is a complex worm with many methods of infecting systems.
2003
In January the relatively benign “Slammer” (Sapphire) worm becomes the fastest spreading worm to date, infecting 75,000 computers in approximately ten minutes, doubling its numbers every 8.5 seconds in its first minute of infection. The Sobig worm becomes the one of the first to join the spam community. Infected computer systems have the potential to become spam relay points and spamming techniques are used to mass-mail copies of the worm to potential victims.
2004
In January a computer worm, called MyDoom or Novarg, spreads through emails and file-sharing software faster than any previous virus or worm. MyDoom entices email recipients to open an attachment that allows hackers to access the hard drive of the infected computer. The intended goal is a “denial of service attack” on the SCO Group, a company that is suing various groups for using an open-source version of its Unix programming language. SCO offers a $250,000 reward to anyone giving information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the people who wrote the worm.
An estimated one million computers running Windows are affected by the fast-spreading Sasser computer worm in May. Victims include businesses, such as British Airways, banks, and government offices, including Britain's Coast Guard. The worm does not cause irreparable harm to computers or data, but it does slow computers and cause some to quit or reboot without explanation. The Sasser worm is different than other viruses in that users do not have to open a file attachment to be affected by it. Instead, the worm seeks out computers with a security flaw and then sabotages them. An 18-year-old German high school student confessed to creating the worm. He's suspected of releasing another version of the virus.

Charles Babbage invented a machine called the difference engine (never completed in his lifetime) that could calculate various mathematical tables. He also planed a analytical engine but never got funding. Both these machines were in fact mechanical. Many electronic computers are credited with being the first, for various reasons. One such computer is the Small Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM) widely known as the Baby. It was developed at the University of Manchester in the UK more than fifty years ago. Although not the first electronic device that could follow instructions, it was the first programmable computer and held it's programs in memory (like modern computers). A google for "Manchester baby computer" should return enough information for you, along with information about the resent rebuilding of the baby to mark it's 50th birthday and a biography's of some of the team members who built it. Hope that helps.

Elk Cloner was the first computer virus known to have spread in the wild. In 1982, Richard Skrenta, then fifteen years old, wrote the virus for the Apple II operating system, which was stored on floppy diskettes. When a computer booted from a floppy disk infected with Elk Cloner, the virus would start, and would subsequently copy itself to any uninfected floppy disk that was accessed. Because computers of that time had dual floppy disk drives, and because diskettes were often passed around among friends, the virus was frequently copied. After contagion, every 50th time that a computer booted up, it would display the following text:
Elk Cloner:  The program with a personality

It will get on all your disks
          It will infiltrate your chips
            Yes it's Cloner!

It will stick to you like glue
          It will modify ram too
            Send in the Cloner!

Elk Cloner was not intended to cause damage, but was created as a practical joke. According to WorldHistory.com, the adolescent Skrenta had a penchant for modifying programs so that they stopped working after some code-specified time period had elapsed, at that point displaying some joke text that Skrenta had written. Not surprisingly, the young programmer's friends grew leery of allowing him access to their diskettes. Elk Cloner's capacity to copy itself (the major criterion of a virus) made it possible for Skrenta to continue to annoy his friends without requiring physical access. The virus is reported to have spread widely among his fellow students (and also to his math teacher), thus ensuring Elk Cloner's place in history

Internet was invented by the USA government to use during war to transfer classified information to there allies. Then a guy (not sure of the name) (first name of TIM) created an idea of making the internet for people. that is how we got the Internet today. Computers where made just for the government, someone got a hold of the information and made them for the people.

http://news.com.com/A+20-year+plague/2009-7349_3-5111410.html

"Of all the accomplishments in the annals of technology, Fred Cohen's contribution is undeniably unique: He introduced the term "virus" to the lexicon of computers.

The University of New Haven professor used the phrase in a 1984 research paper, in which he described threats self-propagating programs pose and explored potential defenses against them. When he asked for funding from the National Science Foundation three years later to further explore countermeasures, the agency rebuffed him.

"They turned it down," said Cohen, who is also principal analyst for research firm Burton Group. "They said it wasn't of current interest."

...

In a paper published the next year, he defined a virus as "a program that can 'infect' other programs by modifying them to include a possibly evolved copy of itself." Cohen proved that such a virus could spread through any system that allows information to be shared, interpreted in a general manner and given away, despite the presence of security technologies.

To demonstrate its potential dangers, Cohen created a test program to see how quickly the virus could spread and undermine the security of a mainframe computer system. He implanted the program in a command that presents Unix file structures graphically, then conducted five attack runs.

The virus managed to "gain system rights"--essentially seizing control of the computer--within an average of half an hour. The shortest run took five minutes.

That is correct. Charles Babbage created the first concept but his was never actually fully-functional. Vannevar Bush barrowed on Babbage's theory and created the Difference Analyzer, and proposed a newer faster system called "Memex". Shortly after the completion of the Difference Analyzer, another project saw completion, the ENIAC, which quickly replaced the Difference Analyzer. Vannevar Bush later went on to lead the Manhattan Project: Atom Bomb experiments.

The first PC virus was a boot sector virus called (c)Brain, created in 1986 by two brothers, Basit and Amjad Farooq Alvi, operating out of Lahore, Pakistan. The brothers reportedly created the virus to deter pirated copies of software they had written. However, analysts have claimed that the Ashar virus, a variant of Brain, possibly predated it based on code within the virus."

brain virus by (basit and amjad alvi)

This virus originated in January, 1986, in Lahore
Pakistan, but the first noticeable infection problems
did not surface until 1988.  In the spring of 1988, for
instance, 100 machines at The Providence Journal-Bulletin
were infected with it.

The Brain is the only virus yet discovered that
includes the valid names address and phone numbers of
the original perpetrators. It was written by two
brothers running a computer store in Lahore Pakistan.
According to some sources, Basit Farooq Alvi, one of
the brothers, wrote the virus so that it would infect
machines running bootleg copies of a program he was
selling for physicians. The original Brain put a
copyright notice in the directory of floppy disks, but
did no other damage.

Apple Viruses 1, 2, and 3 are some of the first viruses “in the wild,” or in the public domain. Found on the Apple II operating system, the viruses spread through Texas A&M via pirated computer games.

The Brain virus was written by a 19 year old Pakistani programmer, Basit Farooq Alvi, and his brother Amjad, and included a text string containing their names, address and telephone number. According to the virus's authors, who worked in sales for a software company, they wanted to gauge the level of piracy in their country. Aside from infecting a disc's boot sector and changing the disk name to '© Brain', the virus did nothing; it had real payload, and did not corrupt data. Unfortunately, the brothers lost control of their so-called experiment and Brain spread worldwide.

Interestingly enough, Brain was also the first 'stealth virus.' When an attempt to read the infected sector was detected, the virus would display the original, uninfected data.
