The specific duties for assistance dog trainers vary from organization to organization.

In many cases they are partnered with one particular dog at a time to train. That dog is under their care and they are required to teach it obedience, as well as the tasks it will be required to perform for its future handler. The trainer is also usually responsible for ensuring the animal is well-socialized and comfortable working in as many conditions as possible.

Once the dog is trained, it is put through rigorous testing.

If it passes, the trainer is also often responsible for training the disabled individual to work with the dog.

Under the contracts of some organizations, the dogs are required to return from time to time to refresh their training, in which case the trainer would likely be responsible for this as well.
