Contrary to what the general public appears to believe, barring a contract that says otherwise it is NOT illegal to: 1.) Fire someone for an absence for which a doctor's note is provided 2.) Fire someone who is on disability or other medical leave 3.) Skip steps in the standard disciplinary process (do you really want an employer to be forced to give a verbal warning to an employee who punches his supervisor in the nose or gets caught red-handed stealing from the company?) A doctor's note is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. The one exception to the above would be if you, the company, and the absences qualify for FMLA. In that case, you could not be terminated for any absences FOR WHICH FMLA IS APPLICABLE until you have missed a total of 12 weeks. You can still be fired for excessive non-FMLA absences.

You can get one from a local clinic, tell them you missed a couple days and now you employer is demanding a note when you return ...they are usually sympathetic and will give you one for a reasonable amount of time. They may ask why did you now see a doctor.. simply tell them .. you did not think it required immediate medical attention. This has worked for me twice... that way if you have an obsessed employer who decides to call and verify the office exsists, your but is covered. Legaly, An employer can call the number provided to see if the doctors office or doctor is legite, However, medical files and patient information is confidential. They can't even confirm a patient received treatment there, it is against the law. Hope this helps
