My female spade cat has a problem peeing on my bath rugs.  She has no problem pooping in her litter box, but will go to the bathroom and pee on a towel on the floor or bath rug.  How do I make her stop this?  We have a new baby as well and its difficult to monitor her all day to keep her out of the bathrooms.

My cat does the same thing. Try hitting the cat lightly to show it that its wrong.

because your human male may be missing the toilet leaving his scent, so your cats doing the same thing.wash rugs and bathroom floor with 1 cup vinager and a sqirt of antibacterial dish soap.

the baby may be the issue - the cat isn't getting as much attention and is acting out.  may want to set aside some time (I know - 'time, what's that?!') just for kitty.  Also, get rid of what you can that the cat has soiled - that smell will never go away as far as the cat's concerned; washing other things with water mixed with distilled white vinegar does reduce the odor, and the sooner you get to it the better.  oh, and men can sit down and go, but only the smart ones admit it.  filthy creatures. :)

if an attitude adjustment* doesn't work, kitty may also have a kidney problem.  get her checked out.

*spanking and/or lightly hitting and/or yelling NEVER works with cats.  a very light bonk on the nose with the soft pad of a finger when they are doing something bad followed by a dose of positive attention very soon afterward while they do something good (like sitting quietly) is the only exception, and this works really well with kittens.  set them up to win, praise them when they do, and everyone wins.

My cat is doing the same thing.  I even tried putting a litter box in the bathroom, right next to the tub.  She will pooop in the box and then pee on the floor or in the  bathtub right next to it.  Especially if there is a towel, rug, or article of clothing on the floor (even a sock!)  I tried keeping the rug off the floor, and draped over the side of the tub and now she will just pull it into the tub and still pee on it.  She's driving me insane!  What do I do?

Try putting her food there.  Someone suggested this to me and it worked!  My cat wouldn't pee on his food.  He had two spots so I'm sure our guests wonder why there are bowls of cat food in the hallway and next to my drapes in the kitchen.
make sure you scoop the cat box everyday too.  Often that helps.

Try my other suggestions first.  If they don't work try sticking her nose in the pee and then squirting her with water while saying no.

if your cat doesn't stop and starts peeing in other places frequently used by the members of your house, she could be trying to tell you something - possible bladder infection. my cat did the same thing and this is the answer i found

My cat does the same thing, the exact same thing in fact. I read that this could be caused by a Urinary Tract Infection, sorry if I spelled that wrong. Are there any other ways to help stop the cat from doing this other than hitting it, because I have tried that and it didn't 'take'.

I would agree with zany 37. Having the same problem, when my son missed the bowl my cat too would only pee in the bathroom and usually on the rugs. It has to be the scent that they pick up from us humans. My wife and I now keep the bathroom even cleaner than before so that there is no scent except for non harmful strong cleaning materials.

Stopping this is two-fold:  1. Remove the residual smell and 2. Stop the habit

Throw out bath rugs/towels.  Clean floor with bleach-containing product.

Keep her out of the bathroom.  Give her another litter box (some cats want to pee in one and poop in the other).  Praise her very highly when she pees in a litterbox, using small amounts of treats, petting, and a 'happy voice'.

My cat peed on my bed when I'm not around, and it seemed to be because her litter box was "unsuitable" to her eyes, so I now keep it much cleaner for her use. Also, I keep a shower curtain on my bed when I'm out of the room. Problem solved!

I just drape the rug over the edge of the tub (it's a 20x40) and put it down when I need it.
Actually, when I do that sometimes she just uses the tub, which is very easy to clean up!
Better than beating. Really.

First of all, the word is spayed, not spade.  My cat did the same thing.  Wash the rug in some perfumed water.  They usually don't like that smell and will keep away.  Make the scent fairly strong at the first washing.  this can then be reduced as the cat shows disinterest in the site.

This is absolutely the worst advice I have ever seen on this topic.  WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?  PLEASE go and look to another website for helpful hints.  Hitting the cat will teach it to fear you.  Closing the door ain't always an option.  And if your "human male" isn't housebroken enough to freakin' AIM properly, you got bigger problems than the cat.

I've heard cats don't really associate being hit with what they did wrong. So I don't think that would help very much.
One of my cats had this same exact problem. We ended up buying him a bigger litter box. We put it in a different room, away from the litter box the other cat uses. His little "problem" stopped as soon as we set him down in front of it.

My female cat is doing the same thing.  We have never had a problem with her in the past untill we moved into our new home.  She started peeing on the couch, on the rugs, on towels left on the floor in the bathroom, on our beds.   So we had to keep all the doors closed to every room and lock them up during the day.  It seems as though she keeps peeing in the same spots.  HELP!  What do we do?
