I have a 5 year old Dane that was born deaf. He has easily adjusted to hand signal although it is hard to get his attention when he is running free. My other dog, a 6 year old cross breed, is very beneficial to the Dane. You will soon realize that since he is deaf, all of his other senses will be heightened. My Dane relies strongly on smell. I swear he can smell something from 10 miles away. I wouldn't trade him for anything!!! good luck

I am now the owner of my second deaf great dane.  It is a big responsibility and well worth the effort.  My present dane is a female that was born deaf.  She is very intelligent and knows hand signs.  We have taken obedience classes and she loves the interaction.  We also belong to a private dog park and she has many friends that she enjoys playing with.  I guess my best piece of advice would be if you own a deaf dog, buy a bell, if the dog can't hear you atleast you will be able to hear the dog.  Go for it, the love you will recieve from your dog will amaze you.

My 3 year old Dane has been deaf since birth. He is the most amazing dog we have ever had. It's like he has a sixth sense that he was blessed with. We do have another Dane that is 8 and who sometimes gets exasperated with Dakota, he has taught him how to bark and be one heck of a watch dog. GOOD LUCK!, you won't be sorry!

I HAVE A 12 YEAR OLD FEMALE GREAT DANE THAT IS DEAF FROM BIRTH. CRYSTAL WAS GOING TO BE PUT TO SLEEP BY THE OWNER, WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT IT, I RAN OVER TO THEIR HOUSE AND GOT THE POOR DOG OUT OF THEIR GARAGE (HOT IN FLORIDA) WITH NO FOOD OR WATER. SHE IS STILL LIVING. I JUST HAD MY 7 YEAR KATIE GREAT DANE PASS AWAY SUDDENLY DUE TO A HEART ATTACK FROM HURRICANE FRANCES, THIS DOG WAS A DOG FOR CRYSTAL. MY CRYSTAL DOES EVERYTHING THAT EVERYONE ON THIS SITE HAS SAID ABOUT THEIR DEAF GREAT DANE, THEY ARE SOMETHING ELSE NOW WE BOTH MISS OUR NON-DEAF DANE THAT WAS A BEAUTY!

I have a 3 year old deaf and partially blind Dane named Tegan, who I hand raised (along with the rest of the litter) after the people who owned the parents wanted the litter euthanized.  Tegan is an amazing dog, knows sign language, and is better behaved than most hearing dogs I know.  I'm actually looking to get another deaf Dane in the near future.

I am the proud owner of a 10 month old deaf great dane. I love her more then words can say. She is a lot of work, sometimes a pain in my butt, but I wouldn't trade her for the world. If you are getting a deaf dane make sure you have plenty of spare time. Also there is a wonderful book out there called "Dealing with a deaf dog" that book kept my sanity. Also since they won't be able to hear you so no, I suggest buying a squirt gun, it works wonders. Flash lights and laser pointers are great attention getters for deaf dogs.

You've probably already adopted one as over a year has gone by. I took in my deaf dane when he was 11 months old. He had already been in 5 homes. He came with anxiety issues and a large crate (which was one of his anxiety issues). I never used the ridiculous crate and it remains as my cat's litter box. He was always good from the start in the house, and never destroyed anything. Now, at 6 years old, my dane is a happy, healthy dog with a lot of spirit. However, he cannot be kenneled and I cannot close a door on him (He'll bark and scratch relentlessly. But why would I want to? To deal with the kennel issue, so I can go away if I need to, I found a wonderful woman who does doggie day care in her home. I got my dane used of her and her home by taking him there once a week for the day. She can have up to 6 dogs at any time running free in her home or yard, and she does overnighters. My guy chooses to sleep on her couch for overnighters....and for daytime naps. Using the same handsignals for consistency is a must. My guy was an extra challenge in the beginning, but with time, he has become very secure and quite full of himself :)

I just bought a deaf Great Dane female, we are going through a tough patch right now (week 2)
she isn't sleeping well through the night, lots of energy :) she is with the breeder right now,
he is working with her, and I am going to keep her in my bedroom for the crate training process. But it IS alot of work, but with time I am sure all will be fine.

Only get one (if) you have alot of extra time, mine gets separation anxiety, so I spend most of my time with her, walks, car rides etc.

Good Luck !
