Not illegal in Alabama, just not recommended.  Your foot is a very active part of your body, and the tattoo will probably fade rather quickly.

No it is not illeagal in any state to my knowledge but again its is an unfavorable place because the skin on the feet and hands regenerates itselfs so much that the tattoos placed there will forever need to be touched up.

I don't believe that Tattoos on feet are illegal. It is that the artists refuse to do them. The pain is excruciating!! After 5 hours of hypnotic pain I have both feet done. It is 2 years now and they have not faded. I had them done in Tahiti and they are beautiful!

I got a flower on my foot a couple of months ago and it faded really nasty. The pain is really excruciating though. You need a high pain tolerance to get one on your foot. By the way, tattoos are not illegal...anywhere on your body...so...that was a pretty stupid question.

Tattooing on your foot IS illegal in some places.  I live in Massachusetts and tattooing has only been legal here for 3 years.  I went to get a foot tattoo and my tattoo artist said that he wasn't supposed to do tattoos below the ankle or above the neck.  Since I know him well he did it anyway but kept it off the record.

And yes tattooing is still illegal in Oklahoma and in South Carolina.

FYI...in some states (Texas, Mass, Maine, etc.) it is illegal to tattoo the hands, feet, genitals, head and face.  In a lot of states it's illegal to tattoo within an inch of the eye.

Ive wanted a tattoo for the longest time and I'm gonna get one in less than 2 months when I turn 18. I wanted a shooting star on my foot but I hate following things that are "trendy"...and I noticed that EVERYONE practically has a star, and I don't like that. The other option was getting an ankh, but a really small one. Now I don't know where to get it cause of all this talk about painful foot tattoos. I have no pain tolerance whatsoever but thats why I'm gonna get a small one. I want an ankh tattoo somewhere not extremely visible but somewhere I can show it if I want to. Any suggestions?

I've heard that getting tattoos in your hand is illegal because the skin is thinner and the veins can be easily hit. I'm guessing it goes the same with your foot. but I don't know if they really are illegal though so just check with your local parlor

I just got a tattoo today on my foot and I love it.  And I live in PA and that artist did not say anything about not being able to do it...but one of the guys said that that was one place he would not get one cuz of the pain.  I have always wanted one of a butterfly on my foot.  It turned out B E A UTIFUL =)  The outline is what hurted the worst and on the main bone running down your foot and the closer he would get to my toes that is when it would REALLY hurt..but other than that...just suck it up...cuz the after affects is what makes it worth it...=)

I had a tattoo of a butterfly on my left foot and I can honestly say the pain wasn't that bad! I already had tattoos on my back and ankle, but I was terrified that the foot would hurt more- even the tattooist warned me it would be painful! But I did it, and it was bearable- The one on my ankle hurt much more. Don't let the pain put you off!

i just wanted to say that if anyone was having doubts about a tattoo because of PAIN...then you shouldnt even get one.  tattooing is something you should do because you want to.  if you want a design somewhere, you will get it there.  if pain is something thats stopping you, then you obviously dont want it enough.

I just got a tattoo on my foot of a line of stars.  It goes from my big toe to the inside of my ankle bone in a variety of bright colors.  It did hurt a little bit, but since I already have had tattoos I didn't mind the pain. The man who inked me told me that it may fade, but as long as you take care of it good the first month or two you wont have any problems.

First of all, I think that with anything else it depends on who does it whether it hurts or not. Not having any tattoos myself, I'm not "experienced" if you will, but I've had my ears pierced numerous times and some people were saying how painful it is to get your cartiledge pierced (I'm a chicken, I admit it!) and I did it anyway and it didn't hurt at all! My 3rd lobe piercing hurt worse! Anyway, I think the same is true with tattoos. It depends on the person that's getting the tattoo and the person that is inking you. And as far as fading goes, I think that depends upon your skin type, and how your skin reacts to the ink because obviously some people that get foot tattoos experience fading, and some don't! It's just a risk you have to take. That's just my humble opinion, but it's something to think about.

I just got a foot tattoo and yes, it hurt. I am going to have to wear shoes this Saturday, and plan to slather it with Curel, put a large bandage over it and tape the edges to hold the cream in. I think this will prevent rubbing that could make it fade. Otherwise, I just go barefoot or wear flip flops.

hey. i have two tatoos already. for the person thinking about where to get one besides the foot that is easy to cover or show. i would go for the shoulder, but not on the side of the shoulder, on the front. i have "soul rebel" written down the front of my shoulder, its about 3 or 4 inches long and it lloks great. everyone loves the location. I also have one halfway between my armpit and collarbone, if you can imagine that, its also a pretty uniqe location.

I been thinkin about a foot tatoo cus i wear sandals all the time, but the fading is my real issue. It depends who your inker is really on how experienced they are and your skin itself, and i have an artist i trust. What i want is a traditional henna design, tatooed on. Also, i heard that the fleshier areas dont hurt as much and the foot hurts a lot because its a bony area of the body. Well, i just wanted to put my 2 cents in, sorry it was so lengthy.

I just got my second tattoo on my left foot. Anyone that says it doesn't hurt is a liar. All tattoos hurt. My artist told me that it will fade on my foot but he is willing to touch it up for free. I would recommend everyone finding an artist that does the same. Tattoos can be very pricey.

How long does it generally take to have a tattoo put on your foot? I wear a size 6 in chicks and I want a spin-off of the Indian henna feet tattoos. You know, like in the movie Kama Sutra, when they'd paint the toes in Henna for rituals. Well I want designs spiraling around the toes and the tops of the feet. Also I heard of pain free tattoos, where they hit you up with a local anesthia, is that only at select tat parlor's or is it something offered at every or most tattoo shops.

i just had a tattoo done on my right foot last week (my first one!). Brightly colored tribal flowers, about the size of my palm. It cost 140, outlining hurt the most but it was bareable. He really tried to 'dig' the color in the first time to prevent fading- but i will still keep my fingers crossed and always put sunscreen on it. i have to wear socks and tennis shoes daily at my childcare job, so i will respond again in a few months to let  you know if there was any fading.

I have 7 tattoo's mostly covering my feet and ankles and one on my shoulder.  None of them hurt it's more of an annoying feeling.  I had my first tattoo done when I was 14 on the outside of my ankle wrapping all the way up front and that didn't hurt.  Getting a shot at the doctor hurts worse.  And tattoo's on the feet and toes are not illegal that I am aware of and they don't fade at all if you know how to take care of them correctly.  Stupid people should not answer questions like yours simply because they don't know what the hell they are talking about and they are just making ass's of themselves.

       How to get a tattoo

Special to the Washington Post

Looking to get inked? Use these hints and you're on your way to obtaining a great tattoo.
Choose an artist: "Read, research, get a referral," counsels independent tattoo artist Paul Roe, who has thousands of tattoos to his credit. (The Web sites Tattooz.net and Tattoodles.com are good places to start looking.) Find someone "whose tattoo you love -- not like, but love -- and ask them who did it," he says. Then, visit several studios.

"Look at photos of the artist's work," adds tattooist Eric Bartholomaus, owner of Keepsake Tattoo in Arlington, Va. "The lines should be consistent, the colors should be solid, and the shading should be smooth." Check level of detail and style, and be sure you're looking at healed tattoos. Fresh ones (watch for redness or a wet appearance) almost always look gorgeous, but the healed pics are what they'll look like forever.

Ask lots of questions: The more information your artist provides, the better. She should answer all your concerns easily and willingly. If she seems uncomfortable -- or if you're just not satisfied with her answers -- go elsewhere.

Do a safety check: Allergic reactions to tattoos are rare, but anyone with sensitivity to a particular metal (such as nickel) should mention it. Risk of transmitting disease through tattooing is also very low, as long as safety procedures are followed. Ask to see the autoclave -- the machine that sterilizes equipment. If it looks as if it hasn't been used in 10 years, it probably hasn't. Also make sure the tattooist employs single-use, disposable needles; the sterile bags that hold these should be opened in front of you. New ink caps, gloves and furniture covers should be used for each customer and thrown away in biohazard bags immediately after each session. When you come into the room, you should watch as everything is laid out and see your tattooist wash his hands thoroughly and put on fresh gloves.

Pick your moment: Before getting tattooed, be sure your tetanus shot is up to date, get a good night's sleep and, to avoid fainting, don't get inked on an empty stomach. (No, they can't just keep tattooing while you're passed out.) Go when the artist is least busy -- you don't want him rushing it, and if he's on his 10th hour straight, he might not be at the top of his game. And if the tattooist is drunk or high, don't let him near your skin.

Brace yourself: It will hurt: Greg Dietrich of Reston, Va., who has more than 10 tattoos, likens the experience to "a deep, long, painful brush burn." To minimize discomfort, Roe tells his clients "the three rules of getting tattooed: relax; breathe consistent, regular breaths; don't move." Roe also says that with a correctly applied tattoo, "there should be very little blood. Perhaps a drop or two over the entire thing." Don't drink alcohol or take aspirin -- both thin the blood -- in the 24 hours before or after getting a tattoo.

Don't forget the aftercare: Ointments, lotions, top-secret formulas -- there are almost as many regimens as there are artists. The best advice? Do what your tattooist recommends. Keep the bandage on for at least two to three hours, then use your hand to wash the area gently with soap and water. Exposure to sun fades any tattoo, new or old, so keep yours covered with sunblock of SPF 30 or stronger.

I had save this in my e-mail thought you'll can use it and if they use cheap ink then it fades also(so i have been told) and NOTHING IS SUPOST TO BE ON IT WHILE IT IS HEALING
" NO SOCKS OR SHOES " YOU DON'T WANT ANY RUBBING OF ANY KIND!  I should know I'veall of my back done, wrist, hand, boob and leg

I know out here tattoos on the foot are allowed but since i live in Arizona we can pretty much go without shoes just about all year round.  I am planning to get a tat on my foot that starts at the big toe and goes across the top and back around the ankle and end in the front. I have a rose tat on my neck just behind the ear and everyone told me it was going to hurt really bad but in fact it didn't. My Hubby got a tat down the ring finger and said it hurt like hell but looks good. you wash your hands more and he has not experienced any fading.  so for all who want on on the foot go for it.  you don't know if it is going to hurt unless you try.

It does hurt to have a tattoo on your foot, I had one done last month, and I had it redone yesterday. I think what matters the most is the size of it.  If it is a small tattoo, one can stand the pain.  If you want a large one, then you had better expect it to be very painful.

I'm not quite sure. my problem is finding a faerie small enough and one that i like to be put on my foot. if anyone knows of any web artists that can draw faeries i would greatly appriciate it!!!! another problem I'm having with my foot tat is the location. i was thinking maybe towards my big toe? ok and one last thing (lol) i don't know if i want the head facing my toe so it looks right side up to me, or the other way around so it looks right side up to every one else. if any one can help with any of these questions i will love you for ever

Hey ... I want to get a tattoo on the BOTTOM of my foot, like my heel, can you do that?  I just want it black, and I dont really care if it fades away ... but will they do that, or is the skin to thick??

I've been considering a foot tattoo for about 6 months now.  I've picked a design and put my own personal spin on it, I've done all the research on it and here's my advice:

First call or visit the parlor and ask if they actually DO tattoo feet (some places refuse) Ask if they offer free touch ups by any chance (doubtful, but some places will for a good reputation)

I've decided the best time to get one is during the summer when you can go barefoot or wear flip flops the most.  Of course there is the issue of sun damage but use plenty of sunblock and just keep your foot in the shade for three months!  It's worth it :P  Besides, who's ever heard of anyone getting a sun burnt foot?  I don't think they get that much sun anyway.

Apparently foot tattoos hurt more than fleshy areas, which makes sense, but if you really really want a foot tattoo and are willing to baby your foot for a few months and you don't mind the possibility of a touch up every few years :S...then go for it!

*****DO YOUR RESEARCH FIRST!!!*****

You don't want to regret it.  Just search 'foot tattoo' in google and you'll get a lot of articles to read.  Good Luck to everyone!

Tattoos aren't illegal in any state unless you are under the age of 18 in which case some states let you get them with parents consent some do not NH for example will not let you get it no matter what if you are under 18.  If a tattoo place is caught it's a misdemeanor the first time and a felony the second.  Fading can happen to any tattoo no matter where it is. It depends on how your skin takes the ink for me they only had to go over both my tattoos once and there is no sign of fading because my skin takes ink well.
