I've had my pitbull for over 1 year now.  The past 2 weeks she's been very aggressive towards her doggy brother.  This weekend alone she's attacked him 3 times, and another small dog i have.  Neither dogs provoked her in any way.  Is this why everyone has said don't trust a pit?  I just don't know.

Your pit bull is dog aggressive. Like every other pit bull out there. Some more then others. People need to realize that pit bulls have a high prey drive towards other dogs. They were bred to fight other dogs in the past. Research will show you that when a pit bull starts to show aggression towards other dogs its called "turning on" and there is nothing you can do about it to stop your dog from feeling this way. Its genetic. My advice to you is to never leave your pit at home with the other dogs unsupervised. You may come home to only one dog alive. You CAN trust a pit bull. But you must understand that he's been bred to do something in his past. Fight dogs. I own a one pit myself. Great dog, and right now he gets along with other dogs. My moms 14 year dog attacks him constantly, my pit runs away. However, I've  discovered through lots of research that one day he is going to fight back. Hes a year and a half right now, perhaps hes a late bloomer, I'm not going to wait to find out. I always supervise him playing with other canines now.

Check out this pit bull site. Read this site and I KNOW you will understand your pit bull ten times better!  www.workingpitbull.com

Moondog, you need to get out of the Pit Bull world.

Pit Bulls were bred since the 1800's to fight other dogs WILLINGLY.   THEY LOVE TO FIGHT.      If you destroy a Pit Bull for wanting to fight,  destroy a Lab for wanting to fetch, and destroy a hound for wanting to track rodents.  It is there TRUE nature and it is PERFECTLY normal for pit Bulls to turn dog aggressive.    PREFECTLY NORMAL!!!!      Just seperate them and let them play SUPERVISED only.      I have 5 Pit Bulls, and EVERY single one will fight when given the chance.   They cant even play together.    It is a trate that THEY WERE BRED for.  Get over it, or out of the dogs.

i am a firm believer that a dogs personality is a reflection of the owner. its all in how you raise them. i have 2 pitbulls. my male we got first and was our baby. slept and did everything with us. we got the female 1 year later, they love each other, the kids & the cats. they occasionaly get carried away when the play with each other. i know that everytime i leave the house and all of the animals are left out together i take that chance that one might not be alive when i come home. i got my dogs knowing this, therfore i cant hold it against them. its been fine for 2 1/2 yrs. hope it stays that way. they all know we are a part of one big family. they all get along & sleep together, but i still know that someday, something might happen. i just hope that it doesnt. its all you can do

sorry, but no dog "loves" to fight.  Every APBT I've ever met (and that numbers into the hundreds)has a certain amount of dog aggression in them but NO dog loves having chunks ripped out of them.

Get thee to an animal behaviourist.  It sounds to me like a classic case of fighting for dominance.  It're relatively easy to fix but you do have to take on board what they suggest and follow what they say rigourously.

your dog is just trying to establish who is in charge, very normal. remember as your dog trys to own the house its not up to your other dogs to put him in check its up to you!!! dont stand by and watch your dog be mean you must repremand your dog immidiatly every time make him stand on the side and watch the other dogs play just like kids your dog will get upset and after awhile 2 weeks or so it will see acting agressive will only cause you to be mad

Any pit will be dog aggressive to one extent or another, but with most cases you can break the dog from an undesired behaviour.  My 68 pound pit sits and whines when he sees other dogs and I won't let him attack.  He wants to kill so badly but he knows that i'm the Alpha and that there will be consequences.  Also, for all you peta dumbasses, animal aggression has been bred into pitbulls, but human aggression has been bred OUT!  Sometimes you hear stupid people saying "this time it was a cat, next time it may be my kid!"  Only a DEFECTIVE pit bull is human aggressive, and in most cases should be put down.

pitbulls don't love to fight because they hate other dogs, they have a strong urge to fight regardless of how they feel.  my pitbull when approached with aggressive dogs thinks that either the dog is playing or she ducks away.  she is very submissive.  however, she gets along better with male dogs and she did get her hackles up when a female tried to mount her for dominance.  males can do it and it doesn't bother her.  she is fixed and that also cuts down on alot of aggression.

Yoru dog is just dog aggressive. Ive owned many a dog and have seen this same thing done with My German Shepherds, Akitas, And Canary dogs. You have to realize that female dogs can also be the dominate dog in a pack like envirment. And you just sometimes have to realize that a dog is just a dog.

Hello all, I happen to stop by because i am currently fostering a one yr old pit bull. He was abused by previous owners and putting him a shelter will probably get him killed. He is sweet and playful yet intimidating by looks.  I do not know his past but as of late i have witnessed his strong passion to stalk and kill cats/rabbits and rodents.  I take precautions by keeping him on a lead whenever we go outside and to keep him active.  He is not neutured.  I wanted to know if his need to mate is creating this monster or is it normal?  Is it just in their nature?  I worry for him because I would hate to see him not find a permanent home for this defect.  He truly is a good companion looking for love.  He is house trained, not destructive, gets long with little dogs, playful and affectionate.  ( I am a min pin owner so I know)  Please shed some light on me! all the best!

I used to own an american pitbull...  First of all I got the dog when he was almost 2 years old.  The people who was his first owner did not train him right.  When I got him he was not fine. for about a year and a half  I started to find he was not worth keeping...  always wanting to fight with other dogs or animals.  he put over thousands of dollars worth of damage in my home.  So I got rid of him.  I could not handle all of that it was too much to take care of.  I did not want any lawsuits to turn on me because what if the dog did bite?  Truth though it is mainly how the owner treats their dogs.  People.... make them mean!!!!  If I would have had the dog when it was a puppy there would have been a lot of difference.   I do not like no MEAN dogs!!!  I am an AKC Boxer owner now and she is treated very well...  I just wanted to put in this message.  Some pitbulls are mean and some are not.  it all depends on how they were trained by their owner.

I have a 5yr pit bull mix. In the past several years she has turned dog aggressive. She's great with people and small children, but I can't trust her around other dogs now. She's very social  as I took her with me everywhere I went since she was 6 weeks old. Will she grow out of this? We really want to get another dog but don't feel that we can with her aggression that turns at any second.

Pitbulls yes do fight but if you have had your pit since it was a pup then I don't think it was socialized properly...just like any other dog or animal for that fact they need to be socialized start when they are young and introduce them to as many other dogs children and ppl you can....test the waters slowly and reward your dog for good behaviour...also punish your dog for bad behaviour...kennel training works greats...I have had many pits and never any serious problems...don't raise them thinking oh this dog is going to be vicious raise them with the attidude of oh this dog is awsome and can do what it needs to do to be accepted in our community..they are very loving and loyal dogs.ty

This is advise for all you pitbull owners that have no information about the breed. I have a pitbull and he is allmost 2 years old. He has never attacked any kids or either adults. He does get into fights with other animals (specially dogs) because of the whole machismothing...they all want to be the center of it all. But aside from that, pitbulls are very loyal and loving dogs, they love attention and like to have everyones attention. The only way my pit gets agressive is when provoked constantly. Unless you are arround the house and he does not know you then he will ask no questions. Pits are very territorial and will do anything it takes to keep it that way. If your pit becomes agessive towards other animals out of nowhere you should address this IMEDIATLY before it becomes worse. Talk to trainers and vets to see what can be done about the problem, disiplen him/her, and. DO NOT FEED THEM FOOD FROM THE TABLE! pitbulls should have a good diet because of their weak stomach. People food does nothing but harm a dog. Hopefully this has helped someone in any way.

Look, I'm not a breeder but a rescuer of most larger dog breeds. I own a abandoned pure bred male boxer "Kaiser" who is very dominant and dog aggressive, he lives in the house with an abused male red nose pit bull "Simba"
Kaiser dominated in a horrific fight which happened when he was 4 and Simba was neally 2yrs old. Since that one incident I believe the dominant male of the house was found. They get along great together now and rarely snarl at each other. I also have dogs of all ages and aggression's coming and going regulary. Now, Kaiser cant be trusted to play with any of the other dog, but where as Simba could be trusted in a cage with any other of them male or female. Every one is entitled to their opinion but in my experience I believe pit bulls need a chance to become pets and should take their natural place at mans side. IF FIGHTING WAS BRED INTO THEM IT CAN BE BRED OUT!

I have three pets.  First I got my cat, Tigger, then my husband got a yorkie mix (weights about 6.5pds.), and his name is Moose, then we got a black lab/pitbull mix, name Boo.  Now ever since the get go these three animals have never been aggressive towards one another expect for play.  They are all very active all under two years old.  It might be because Boo is mixed w/lab but he is a very loving dog, he is also very protective, but has never bit a person nor another animal not out of play.  We have left him alone w/our animals and never had a problem...then again all of them were raised togerher.  I feel from my experince that pits just like any other dog will act out by how they are raised, and what is in there bloodline.  My pit/lab was from an abuse home...and does great.  That is my insight.  Thank you.

After a while some pitbulls need to be seperated from each other. They develop a territorial point of view, and try to gain an alpha status among who ever is around them. Usually at this point they need to be seperated and given a space where they can both develop seperate strong personalities, without nother pitbul demanding the alpha role. In this way the one thats attacking will e able to feel like she's one the alpha status and be confident. That'll make her very loving if you treat her so. The other one my be abl to handle other dog in the future but fot he time being seperating them would be the best thing you could do

pitbulls are not all fighters.  My three year old has never been aggresive toward an animal.  He loves cats, dogs  and all children.  He is great with all sizes of dogs.  I have spent a great deal of time with him.  A pit bull demands a  lot of attention and exercise to be happy and well behaved.  They are not the dog for everyone.

HAVE YOU NO SHAME!? You should not be aloud to own a dog. You obviousely know nothing about them. And if you honestly think that there is a chance that you might come home from work to find one of your pets dead, but you risk leaving them alone together anyway, then you must not give a damn about your pets. You are an iresponseable owner if you can take a chance like that. You could be risking your dogs' lives, and you don't screw around with a life. So start taking your position as a pet parent seriousely.

I DO BELIEVE THAT PITS RESPOND TO OTHERS ATTITUDES AS MUCH AS IT WAS BRED INTO THEM. I HAVE A RED NOSE HE IS A YR AND 3 MONTHS. SO FAR SO GOOD. WE TREAT HIM LIKE A BIG BABY. PEOPLE SAY WE HAVE A PUSS NOT A PIT. THATS OK WITH ME. WE CAN GET DOWN ON OUR KNEES AND PUT OUR FACES IN HIS DOG BOWL WHEN HE EATS, WE CAN TAKE HIS BONES OUT OF HIS MOUTH WITH OURS AND HE IS SO COOL AND PASSIVE. BIT IN THE BACK OF MY MIND I WONDER IF HE WILL BECOME DOG AGGRESSIVE? I REALLY HOPE NOT.

I have had pit bulls for over 20 years. They are bred to not trust or like other animals but that should not be transfered into agression towards humanes. However they can tend to view a child as a nucent animal. Hence the bite reputation. These are wondeful animals with strong inhert instinc. Responsibility is more the issue than anything. Be aware of the poistion you place your very powerful dog in. No matter how gentel---breeding does matter.

I can't understand why anyone would want a dog or dogs that might kill one another while you leave them together.  That does not sound like a cuddly "pet".  More like abused lions or tigers in the Roman games thousands of years ago.

I think wacky aggressive people who want to try and dominate other people get a charge out of these threatening dangerous animals.  Its a loaded gun in fur ready to go off at any time.

I think people claim they can control these dogs but I don't think anything will stop one that's aggressive toward humans and that trait does not show up right away in these dogs.  So a cute pit bull puppy turns into the Tasmanian devil as it matures and kills or mauls someone.  Not all breeds act like this, I don't care what these owners say.

My pit bull is so loving and passive. He really does not like to fight, but you have to realize that my pit bull, Hennessey, was raised to be a family dog. He does not like to fight anything, but he gets aggressive towards strangers in and around "his" house. But my baby does not bite, attack or chase anything unless commanded to. He knows who is mama and daddy, and that he is not the one who calls the shots, and if you train him right, they will do good. But like they say watch every dog, cause you never know, it's not just with pit bulls. And yes, they will fight if ALLOWED to. You are the boss. And I don't care what anybody says, sometimes a good thing to do is to give em a slap on the butt. Being a pit bull, it won't hurt too much, but it will surprise them enough to yell at them. Also, I hope you have cage trained the dog. My doggy was cage trained and that was like his bedroom, so you get in trouble get in the cage. And npw he doesn't even need the cage, we threw it out, and now when he knows he's in trouble he just puts his ears back and lays down. The doggie needs to know who is the boss, and it can't be him. So just check the behavior, and the dog will check himself. Hoped I helped a little, and all of this is my opinion, and own experiences, so don't quote me. Have fun with your doggie, if they can't play nice then they can't play, I hate knowing that a dog was killed or hurt by another dog.

treat her alot. but not wwhen shes being bad though. when she is pat her on the bum and grabher noise and tell her in a firm ( not angry) voice that  thats not exseptble. do that every time.

Seriously - at the end of the day, the fact of the matter is,

"It's not the breed, its who's on the end of the lead"

Yes, Pit's are a lot stronger and CAN BE more agressive than other breeds, but ultimately - we as owners, allow these qualities to be brought out in our dogs.

Socialize them with other dogs, humans, children, animals and teach them right from wrong...

People need to understand that pit bulls require a lot of time and love - they need to be socialized around people, children, and animals big and small from a very early age

- like all other dogs, they require this socializing in order to be friendly to all other living things. It really is the people's responsibility to make sure this happens, or do not get a pit bull if you can't put the time necessary to train them.

I have had my girl Cede (Sadie) for 5 years now - she goes to the beach off leash and plays with every dog in sight - if one gets aggressive at her she runs away - NOT aggressive. She also listens to 4 year olds when they tell her to sit - about the sister dog becoming dominant - if telling them no when they get aggressive doesn't work they do need to be separated.

be educated - learn all about the breed, not just what you hear on the news.

Nottacop, you don't know what you are talking about.  Pitbulls are family dogs.  They have been for hundreds of years.  People, through improper breeding have created dogs with dog aggression for their own selfish, greedy reasons.  If bred properly, these dogs make the very best pets and can get along just great with other dogs.

I have a female-Jasmine and male-Jack.  I have three cats.  I trust them completely with my cats.  My female wrestles with the one cat.  The cat bites her and pulls on her skin and Jasmine playfully bats at him and then rolls onto her back and plays some more.  They love each other, the cats and Jack and Jasmine.  No problems, ever.  The pits wrestle and play.  Both are rescues.  They would lick you to death.

People are the problem if a dog is dog aggressive.  People breed the dogs, people take the loyalty and tenacity of these dogs to line their own pockets.

On another note, this breed banning is absolutely insane and will not solve the problems that people think that they will.  Dog-fighters will continue to have and train their dogs.  These dogs will continue to get out.  Dog-fighters will continue to "dump" the dogs that don't have "game."  People are the problem.  Not the breed.

Have you ever been bitten by a dog?  I have.  I was 2 when I was mauled by a hunting dog (spaniel).  I had a chunk taken out of my lip by a little Benji looking dog.  I had to undergo rabies shots because of a miniature collie.  Never have I worried about my pits.  And you know what?  I pick up strays in the city all of the time.  Never have I been bit, never have they been aggressive, never have I been concerned about my decision to get that dog off of the street to a vet and to a place where he/she can find a good home.

I think its all how you raise your pitts. I have 3 males. All of my dogs are extremely friendly to other dogs, as well as each other,  as well as children, cats and whatever may be roaming around the yard at the time. I do believe that if a pitt becomes bored, he may turn aggressive, therefor all of my dogs are highly trained and given a specific duty around the farm as their own personal job. I am getting ready to move to the state of Texas from Ohio. If any of you would like to buy one of my beloved pups, I'm selling a Blue/White 60 lbs 6months old pup. He's extremely friendly, kid proofed, house trained, all shots up to date, neutered, will sit stay lay-down and will not run if off leash. "Nitro" was also taught to lay his head in your lap when he wants to be let out. If you know of anyone looking or if you are looking please call chris at 419 925 4340. To good home only! Thanks

Well my basset hound was bit by a pit bull for no reason. My basset loves to sniff other dogs and she was at a dog park and she just touched noses for a second with a pitbull on a leash and the dog chomped down on her lip. Luckily the dog  just got one tooth in so my bassets lips werent torn off. Of course the owners tried to make it sound like their dogs wasnt even a pit bull. "Its a stafforshire terrier". Arnt pit bulls bred to fight bears. Also Akitas were breed to fight bears in Japan and German shepherds are guard dogs these arnt family pets. If you want a family pet that gets along well with others get a lab or Retriever. It would be like saying I didnt know tigers were aggresive.

i feel that even if your pit is human aggressive towards strangers he/she shouldn't be killed.dogs can be protective of property and why should you punish them for wanting to keep strangers away.i have a dobe and a pit and i tell everyone that they should not fear the pit.the Doberman is the killer.he gets upset if you look at him wrong but yet there are no bans even thought of for dobes.they are more human aggressive than dog aggressive .i feel that if a dog is let loose or poorly contained then the owner is to blame but if someone walks into your yard when signs are posted they enter at their own risk.they should have called or stayed in their car and honked the horn.

All pits are different, any dog can fight its just that pits are stronger dogs. pits are not born to fight, they start fighting if the OWNER teaches them to do so. My family had rescued 2 pits, one was food aggresive and my dog which i still have today fought over various things but never did they really try to kill eachother. All dogs are different and a dogs attitude all depends on the OWNER.

Most pit bulls are dog aggressive and it is a trait that has been bred into them for a number of years. This does not mean that all pit bulls are dog aggressive, and no, it is not just how you raise them, although this can have an influence; it is mostly genetic. It is in the best interest of your dogs and you as well, that you do not leave your dogs together unsupervised because an accident could happen, which could give you and/or your dogs a bad name.

A pit should only be put down if it shows unreasonable aggressiveness towards a human (if it protecting you and your property this is probably not unreasonable).

Not all pit bulls will fight, but in general most pits do have a desire to fight.
This does not mean that pit bulls love being bitten, just as a fighter does not love getting hit.

TO MOONDOG : HOW DARE YOU ADVISE SOMEONE TO DESTROY HIS PITBULL?!!! A PITBULL IS A WORK OF ART, A MASTERPIECE AND SAD TO SAY NOT ANYBODY CAN TAKE CARE OF ONE BECAUSE THIS BREED NEEDS SPECIAL ATTENTION AND KNOWLEDGE BECAUSE PITBULLS ARE WAY WAY TOO DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER BREED OF DOGS. THEY'RE GENETICALLY DESIGNED FOR FIGHTING, HERDING, AND SHOWMANSHIP AND I DESPISE THOSE PEOPLE WHOSE BEEN OPENLY SAYING THAT APBT'SSHOULD BE BANNED. I HAVE ONE MYSELF AND BEFORE DECIDING TO HAVE FULL RESPONSIBILITY OF OWNING ONE, IVE RESEARCHED AND ASKED MANY PEOPLE ABOUT THE BREED. ITS TRUE THERE ARE PITBULLS THAT ARE MAN BITERS AND I THINK THIS IS NOT ENOUGH REASON FOR THEM TO BE NEUTRALIZED OR DESTROYED,WHAT THEY NEED IS A SPECIAL SCHOOL WHERE THEY CAN BE TRAINED. APBT IS A FIGHTING, KILLING MACHINE. THEYRE DESIGNED FOR THIS!!

Keeping ALL PITBULLS seperated is just stupid, If your dog has been treated the way a dog is supposed to be treated with love. Then your dog will be fine. ALL DOGS ARE AGGRESSIVE, its nature! pits or not, You dont hear CRAP about German Shepards biting someone, or rots attacking someone. No its b/c when pits attack, they are the worst fiered! Id rather have a short legged dog attack me rather than a 150 lbs rottweiler attack me anyday! I have 2 Pitts and we just had puppies, my male is very affectionate towards the female and ALL the puppies, However when another dog comes around or walks by on the street, he barks like any other dog would, its called CANINE INSTINCT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so MOON DOG if you think a dog being agressive means putting it down, then you dont know jack about dogs!

The action of any dog regardless of bread is in how it is raised. pit bulls get there reputation for being aggressive and attacking people and other animals because you hear of it more from them but that is not to say they are a bad bread of dog if the dog is turning aggressive towards the animals there is some reason for it. take the dog to the vet and have them run a heart worm test on the animal and it might just be that she wants to show that she is the dominate one

I have been around hundreds of pitbulls and 90% of the dogs are not dog or human agressive. My suggestion is to keep the aggressive dog away from the other dogs. And If you introduce pits to diffrent dogs from the puppy stage until it's an adult you most likely wont have these problems. The biggest thing people mistake about pits is that they need obidience and dominance. If you don't control them you'll be in big trouble. Submission holds are a good way to show dominance when your pit does something wrong. Don't hurt them just show them who's top dog. Also a big factor is the genes. There are plenty of breeeders out there that strive on dog and human friendly pits. Those are the breeders you want to get your pits from. Sorry but nottacop your an idiot. People like you are what give pits a bad name. Look up the facts and you'll be suprised.

Pit bulls are NOT, I repeat NOT, bred to fight. They may be dog aggressive, but then again even a poodle can be dog aggressive. It is usually the owner that makes a good pit bull bad. In these cases the owner should be punished, not the dog. They were just doing what they were taught. If you get a pit bull from a reputable breeder and raise them right you will end up with a protective playful loving dog. I have 2 sister pit bulls and they are the best dogs I have ever owned. They are not aggressive in any way. They are my babies but are also protective of everyone in the family. People need to realize that ANY dog can can turn on ANYONE at ANYTIME!!!!!!!!

I'm sure with any animal its instinct to be protective, to guard, protect. To become agressive if pushed there. I have owned Rotties and they have been the sweetest, gentle souls ever. But you have to be watchful of how you raise them- who they're raised with and the situations you put them in.

I took in a Pitt less than a year old, 2 days new to our home. Pitt is really food agressive only with cat/dog around. We can pet, take the bowl away, but if our cat is in the kitchen eating and the Pitt enters she attacks. How do we break this? Ideas?

Pitbulls were bred in the past for one purpose. Dog fighting. They were bred for high gameness, high threshold of pain, and of course strength. Since these traits would allow for a good show! And something for people to make money on. I don't believe in this act as it is illegal now. But it still goes on. Pits fight, thats a fact, but not to show dominance. When most dogs fight they do so to show dominance. Which is a big mistake for other dogs who fight pits. Pits fight for their lives during every fight. So if it is allowed to happen they will fight until the other dog is incapacitated, or they are physically unable to continue the fight themselves. I own a beautiful red nose who is, as of right now, dog friendly, but i know that can change in an instant. Owning a pit takes work, but is a very rewarding experience. I've never experienced the loyalty and sense of family with any other dog than I do with pits. If you bought a pit because it was a cute puppy, you were wrong and should of researched the temperament and pros and cons of owning this breed, or any other bull breed of dog!

Pitbull or not they should not be aggressive, yes they were many many many many..... years ago bred to fight other dogs, RESPONSIBLE breeders have been attempting to breed that out of them so that you can enjoy the loving affection of multiple Pitbulls under one roof, if you raise a pitbull appropriately you should have no problem with them fighting other dogs, I rescued my pitbull from someone who did not want her because she would not fight, she is the most loving dog in my pack, her and my boxer play all the time and they never get aggressive, they know when to quit, and my pit knows who is above her in our pack.  A dog is a dog whether it is a pit or a lab or whatever, it is NEVER acceptable for your pitbull to show aggression.  You need to nip this problem in the bud NOW, they can be hard headed at times but they usually learn really quick, and they want to please you so make sure that they know you are NOT happy about their behavior when they show aggression towards other animals.  A good book to read if you want to understand Dogs better and especially Pitbulls is Cesar's Way by Cesar Milan he has taught and rehabilitated many pitbulls even ex-fighting dogs and they can function with out fighting in a pack of 60+ dogs.  Just keep in Mind it is NEVER alright for your pitbull to act aggressive towards another animal. If you allow him to behave this way now he will eventually learn you are not going to be the pack leader and he probably will attempt to take over the alpha status from you which will result in him fighting you.

Buy a Chihuahua and see how many times it bites you and your kids.  God Bless and leave the pit bulls alone.

i cant believe what i am hearing from the mouths of some of you fellow pit bull owners it would take a lot for me to rescue any other breed than a pit when you people say that they will be dog aggresive or aggresive at all it hurts that is why they have such a name. my pit bulls are well trained, non aggresive in any way. anyone here with an aggresive dog (since a puppy) have trained your dog to be aggresive. maybe not on purpose but it is from the owner i can bring my dogs anywhere with any amount of dogs without them wanting to fight or starting fights in fact they will walk away from an aggresive dog (yes walk away) train your dog properly without hitting yelling or any negative training. all my dogs have been trained with total positive renforcment and it works. i have never hit or even yelled at my dogs. try it, it works and anyone here who believes differently should not own a pit or any other dog. hitting or yelling leads to an aggresive dog thats how they are trained to fight. and when i am not at home my dogs are kenneled and seperated.

Apparently nobody knows what they're talking about. ANY dog, pit or not, does not enjoy fighting any way you look at it. Wild dogs and the original ancestors of the dogs we know today, if given the choice, will choose not to fight. It is they're natural instinct to simply do a lot of growling, snapping at the air, raising their hackles to make themselves look bigger and generally scare the oppponent off. Once has shown that he/she is the submissive of the two, the little confrontation is over. Biting is their last resort. Another thing you need to know is that dogs love to work and please their owners. This is how dogmen get their dogs to fight. It is like training your dog to Roll Over, they do it to please you, not because they enjoy it.

Not all pitbulls are aggressive torward other dogs because i have a black female pitbull and she is as friendly as she can be. She will play with any other dogs that will come up to her and want to play with her. If you allow your dogs to meet with other friendly dogs it will get use to being around other dogs more often. People say a lot of thing about pitbulls such as how vicious (violent) they are, but they are not like that unless you make them that way. So if you do not try to make your pit mean it will not be mean to ANYONE!!! Man:Woman:Child:or even another animal. So think the next time if anyone tells you to do something to your dog that you know is wrong. Because all dogs will remember what you do to them.

any dog that 'loves to fight' should be destroyed.  my pit was rescued from the street, nearly dead from knife wounds to his legs---he was being used as a bait dog.

when my LAB MIX attacked him one day, he grabbed her by the throat and held on.  when i separated them, i found that she had punctured his skin about 11 times.  my pit was bleeding like crazy and she didn't have a scratch on her.  being that she had already bitten me twice, i put her down.  keeping a dog like that around is just asking for trouble.

my pit is loving towards all people and my male hound  dog.  he will not instigate fights, but he wouldn't back down from a fight if another dog provoked it.  don't be stupid---discourage ANY dogs' aggressive behavior.   put your dog in its place.  take it to a behaviorist. don't listen to these people who are saying it's okay.  it isn't.

His hormones are coming in its natural for pits to fight. He snapped at the little one over a bone but yet they will cuddle up to gether and sleep. All it is, is the mood and how they feel. My dogs do excellent.I treat them like children.

i have a female pitbull and a lab,my lab is far more aggressive then she is, he starts the fights.it is not true that pitts love to fight, thats something some ghetto idiot made up to make him feel better about making money off an innocent animal. my dogs and cats are left alone together all of the time and im not afraid of anybody being dead when i get home.if you think is bred in pitts to be aggresive, why isnt any other fighting dogs used. akitas, german shepards, kusavs etc...there all guard and fighting dogs, and someone please explain to me why pitt owners starve thier dogs, feed them gun powder and hook them up to heavy chains to make them more aggressive, ive got an idea , why dont youleave the dogs alone and train yourself to fight for money, come on over and ill hook you up to the tredmill. news flash people all terriers have a lock jaw, even toto, and by the way do all you pit experts know a german shepard has more pressure in its bite. so why dont you people buy a dog to be your pet and family member, get ajob and stop using defenseless pits to make your ghetto money. be a responsible pet owner so the rest of us can enjoy our pitbulls. by the way my pitbull weighs 75 pounds and could kick ass if she were allowed to,i also own agerman shephard. all i can say is i never have to lock my doors because my dogs arent kept in a kennel.

I am actually experiencing the same issue with my pit.  He is being sent off to training tomorrow, so hopefully we can remedy the issue, I'll let you know what i find out...but I just really believe that with enough excercise and the proper training (HUMAN and dog training) this can be controlled.  Dogs are different like humans...some people are leaders and some are followers,we're just born that way, but we can be taught to act differently when we need to. This dog, just like mine needs to be taught how to become a follower, and WE need to learn how to be the pack leaders.  There is hope, and i do agree, pits shouldn't be left alone with other dogs...they are determined, and if something happens, whether they start it or not, they will be determined to finish it.  Just be responsible for your dog.

I LOVE PITBULLS SO MUCH I HAVE DEVOTED MY LIFE TO MY DOGS. I HAVE SEVEN PITBULLS AND NONE OF THEM ARE NOT ON A CHAIN. MY POINT BEING PITBULLS HAVE WHAT IS CALLED AN OPENING POINT. THIS IS THE POINT WHERE THE PIT WANTS TO FIGHT. SOME PITS ARE LATE BLOOMERS. IVE HAD A PIT THAT BEGAN BEING AGGRESIVE AT SIX MONTHS AND I HAD A PIT THAT IS 3 YEARS OLD AND IS JUST STARTING TO BE AGGRESSIVE. I DO NOT LIKE TO FIGHT MY PITS AND DO NOT LIKE ANYONE WHO LIKES TO FIGHT THERE DOGS. I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU PUT YOUR DOG ON A LEASH BECAUSE YOUR PIT IS STARTING TO BE AGGRESSIVE AND NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE TELLS YOU IT WILL NOT GO AWAY.  OVER 100 YEARS OF BREEDING IS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY IN 1 DAY.

Moondog's advice is idiotic.

Pit bulls have a tendency for dog aggression that ususally shows up after 1 year of age.  The best advice has already been given:

1.  Seperate the dogs when they cannot be supervised.
2.  Supervise play/together time.
3.  Never take your dog outside while not on leash.
4.  Never go to a dog park.  Ever.
5.  Never trust your pit not to fight.
6.  Get a breaking stick so if there is a fight you can get the pit off the other dog.
6b.  Never use a breaking stick save on a pit bull.
6c.  Try to have somebody help you so the other dog wont continue the attack/injury you.

I don't tolerate dog aggression from my pit and she seems to have learned that I don't like.  It can still be provoked by another dog that is rather hyper, but I have minimized the problem.  Still I never trust her not to fight.

Pitbulls can get along fairly well with their litter mates or even other dogs until they reach the rip old age between 18mths - 2 yrs. Then they switch up and become more animal aggressive. I have 9 Pitbulls and have raised them since they were born, i have studied them and watch them and they were never trained to fight, but they will if given the chance. My advice is be careful and for safety of all involved, never leave them unsupervised.

I have had my pit for 1 year and 5 months and the only time she got aggresive was when she was leting all the other dogs know she was top dog.Dont let her/him be in more controll of you ,you are the alpha male and female and they will respect that.

Both over 100 pounds. i have 3 cats as well. for the first 3 weeks of me getting the puppy i wont be around for the mornings. so i was just wondering if its a good or bad idea to get a pitbull when i have other animals. i will treat her like a queen but im still a little scared she will get aggresive towards my other animals

Please go to the library, a trusted vet, or onto the internet. It is normal for Pitbulls to be agressive with other dogs. That is because of their breeding over the years. They should never be that way with people though. They were bred to be friendly with people so the dog fighters could handle them in the fighting pits. A vet will tell you that dog agression and people agression are very different, and dog aggresion in a pit is completely normal.

i think maybe its not that she is "turning on" witch is bull.she may be in heat  i have had 6 pit bulls in my life and now only have 2 3 of them got old and pasted away 1 had to be put down cuz of his aggressiveness i took him from a man that was never home and when he was home he beat the dog the pit was 3 when i took him and i had him for 6 years none of my other pits have never shown aggressiveness at all but then 5 of my 6 had UKC papers and you can guess witch one didn't but in all he was a great dog and still missed by all my family and friends and its always sad to see any pit bull pass on or be put down

Well, I have a 1yr old American red nose pitt...I had her since she was 6wks and since then til now she normally listens to me. Although I had to let her go and live with my mother and younger brothers(in another state)due to me moving into a new apt...when I go and visit, she's still really good. They have a chow mix and they DO NOT get along at all.But my question for you today is when is the ideal time for her to mate? I was told by others that she's acting up because she's in heat. She had her menstrual last month and should be getting it, in the next 6mnts.
