I have my computer hooked up to a cable modem. Is there any way to get my  laptop connected to the internet at the same time using the same cable?  Also, I would like to be able to connect to the internet from any room in the house,is that possible? How would I do that?

You will need an inexpensive "router."  Your cable modem plugs into the WAN port of the router, and all your computers plug into the other ports.  The cable company thinks the router is your computer, and the router delivers a signal and IP address to each computer, usually using DHCP.

To be able to take your notebook computer all over the house, consider a wireless router.  You will need a wireless antenna (client) on your notebook, but a wireless router is not much more expensive than wired one, and most have at least 4 wired ports for your desktop.
