I've seen a lot of sXe tats that have these little blue & red birds on them. they all look the same. what's this about?

The swallows doesen't really have anything to do with sxe. They are an old school tatoo wich means freedom.

The swallow tattoo has nothing to do with straight edge at all. It's a traditional tattoo and many people who live the straight edge lifestyle also enjoy tattoo art. I suppose someone can take that design and personalize it to make it an edge tattoo out of it but for the most part, it's just a traditional design. people who are not straight edge have these tattoos too. The swallow tattoos originated with sailors. They would get these tattoos after they'd sailed 5000 miles. They represent a few things but for the most part they represented safety and security. These tattoos were believed to grant a sailor a safe trip at sea and return home.

Actually, it was the blue bird, not the swallow that sailors had tattooed on their chest. After five thousand miles a sailor would get a blue bird on one side and after ten thousand he would get another blue bird on the other side. Sort of a right of passage and good luck. The red and blue swallows represent the duality of life: good vs. evil, love vs. hate, angel vs. devil, etc. In fact the swallow tattoos often appear as a red swallow with horns and a blue swallow with a halo.

actually, it is a key fact that all swallows return home to san juan capistrano every year, and they are used as a symbol for loyalty and a statement that you will always come home.

it's been said that if someone has a swallow on their chest and he "or she" drowns the swallows come down and lift his soul to the heavens swallow tats originate from the old navy, ..... the tattoos were used to say that you will always come home. They are a sign of loyalty, pride to both regions and people.

I can see how a Swallow tattoo can be associated with Straight Edge. Swallows mate for life and nest with only that bird, unlike other species of birds. The swallow is a modern symbol of fidelity, loyalty, and true love.
