Well they are very tall and most people would recommend a 5-7' fence but I have a five foot fence and put a wire around the top.(it's electric) All they have to do is touch that wire one or two times and they won't ever try to climb over again as long as the wire is there.(on or off)

An electric fence on the top part of your fence is not good, The shepherd can get tangled in it and get hurt really bad. Your better off getting a fence that's 6 almost 8 feet. I have a shepherd and my fence is 6 feet high. Another thing is, shepherds can jump 9 feet high, they jump this high in shutzhund. If you know who RIN TIN TIN is, he jump 24 feet high to get to a window in an episode they made. So, german shepherds can jump really high. An electric fence can kill a shepherd, expecially a puppy that learns how to climb.
