Do you have a Jack Russell Terrier or a Rat Terrier?  They are two separate breeds.  For info on the Jack Russell, there is a the JRTCA website.  For the Rat Terrier, you should be able to find them in a breed book that covers dogs in the UKC.  To date, I don't think they are recognized by the AKC.  If you have a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier, you have a mutt and that would be anyone's guess where to get info.

I got a dog at the pound.  Some people think it is a Rat Terrier, some think he also has Jack Russell in him.  He is app 5 mts old and is 20 pounds.  Jumps high, will sit on command, was potty trained after 2 weeks, great with our family, likes water, knows when he does a "NO NO'  .He loves to go on walks and obeys quite well.  He is rather smart too. He jumps quite high, and doesn't bark a whole lot only when he played with by our boys and they "play bark".  He senses danger and will be curious only so far. We just aren't sure how big he will get  so we named him Willie....  Will he be big or will he be small.  We love him!

I have what is called a Jack Rat at least that is what the breeder called her when I got her. She is a very smart dog and is great with kids. She is 6 months old right now and weights about 15lbs her name is Ravens Velvet Abbi we call her Abbi. I have seen on some websites that this may be a new breed I don't know and I really don't care I just know they are an awesome breed for families. I have found that everyone in the family has to show her some attention daily each of us or she tends to go to just one of us and will not listen to anyone but that one person. She is smart and has learned she has to listen to everyone in the family. She is cautious around cars and learned outside quickly.

I have been all through the UKC website and they do not have a breed listed by Jack Russell/Rat Terrier, nor do they have a Jack Rat Terrier.  If you love the dog, and it is a perfect pet for you, great, and who cares about it's pedigree.  Fact is though, you still have a mutt.  A lot of good breeds have started out as mutts, so this may be a great breed for the future.  Who knows.  I could definitely see advantages to mixing the two breeds.  Just don't believe everything a breeder says about registration until you have true club registration papers in hand.  Pedigree papers aren't the same thing.  I will certainly keep my eye on the possibility of developing this as an acceptable breed.  For those of you who say it is UKC accepted, where is the website or proof of this?  I'm just curious.

I have a Mutt lol.  He is a Jack Ratt.  I would not trade him for the world.  If you want a great dog or mutt.  This is what you should chose.  If you now the two breeds than you would know what a great dog this is.  I dont even know were to start.  Some people claim to have the best breed to buy but I guess this is the mutt to buy.  My 20lb dog goes 30 ft if not more out in the ocean.  Infact I cant keep him out of the water during the winter months.  He is smarter than most people I meet. lol

I raise Rat Terriers that are registered with the UKC. My Ratz are not Jack Russell aka Parson Russell mixes. They are a separate breed.

Within the Rat Terrier, you have Toy, Mini, Standard, and Decker breds.
There are 2 leg lengths.
Type A is long legged and is your common Rat Terrier.
Type B is short legged and are called Teddy Roosavelt Terriers.
They have 3 types of ears.
Erect (most common), tipped and button (Russell Type)

My Rat Terriers are the more common Tri-colored Piebald. This is white with black random patches and tan points.

All Rat Terriers can trace their lines back to many breeds, as can any AKC accepted dog breed. They were bred for a purpose, and that purpose is "Ratting" dogs that hunt down and kill vermin. It's their job and they do it well.

There are Rat Terriers still at work overseas in granaries, and also here in the US. I farm as well. My Rat Pack keeps mice ,snakes, and pest animals out of my feed, my yard, and my home.

This might sound like cat work to most people. But, when you see a pair of Ratz drive off a coyote pack determined to get  your young livestock, they go way beyond simple mousing.

Jack Russells were bred on similar lines. They and Ratz shared ancestry.
Both are tenacious, fearless hunters, loving family dogs, and as an extra, they are quality entertainment with their intelligence and sense of humor.

Both are well worth recognizing as the wonderful, SEPARATE, breeds they are!!

I just bought a Jack Rat a few days ago. It is the best.  Her name is Daisy. She getting the hang of the potty training thing.  And her ears stick straight up to the sky.  When she runs--her hind legs move in unison.  It reminds me sort of how a rabbit runs.  I can count the number of times she has barked on one hand.  She is good when she is left home during the day.  She sleeps through the night. And listens exceptionally well for only being 3 months old.  Her markings are very attractive.  I believe this dog is one of the best I have seen around.  I think I am going to eventually build a JackRat website.  What do you think?

The Rat Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club on January 1, 1999.

"The RTCA have petitioned for (and are working towards) official AKC recognition; but are at this time, Rat Terriers are considered a "Rare Breed". There are several Rare Breed Clubs along with a growing number of AKC (and UKC) affiliated clubs, that do offer and/or provide working/showing opportunities that include Rat Terriers."

My Jack/Rat (Simon) will be 3 years old this month.  To anyone looking for more than just a "pet" this is definately the way to go.  The best dog in the world.  He is wonderful with my children, but not too keen on strangers.  But thats ok.  My 17 lb dog is just protecting me.  Once he sees that I am friendly with a person then he's fine. He is wonderful with other dogs, as long as they are no bigger than he is. (This is when he all of a sudden grows to 200 lbs.!) I do not know what I would ever do without him.
We are actually considering getting Simon another Jack/Rat friend.  Does anyone know of any breeders in either the Pensacola Fl. area or Chicago Il.

I was just in a pet store at the Charleston Mo, Mall and they sell a breed called a Jack Rat.  We played with her a while in the store and fell head over heels in love with her, but the $500.00 price tag on her was a bit much so we could not buy her.  I have checked several other places and they run the same amount.  Mutt???? I think not

My Jack/Rat is named Ernie B.  He is absolutely the best dog in the world.  He is so smart and funny to watch.  His ears flop forward, at 4 months he weighs about 7 pounds and although you could easily mistake him for a Jack, his mother was a Jack and Father was a Rat.   I love when he comes  running to me, when he is excited, his butt sorta preceeds his head and runs in a U shape.  It is a sight to see.   If you want to see pics of Ernie B, or share some of yours, email me at itsmecarma@yahoo.com.

I have a JackRat named Bailey. She's 2 1/2 and I love her as if I had her myself! She also runs like a rabbit- and lays like one too- I sometimes call her "rabbit". She is intensely loyal and is definitely a mama's girl. I take her to work every day so she is very used to people. She does however show signs of aggression towards children sometime. She is also as smart as any child out there. I have never had a dog this smart. I have also heard they were going to register this a a new breed of dog. It doesn't matter to me whether they doo or not though- a purebred dog could not be any better of a dog than my Bailey! I hope someone out there does develop a website for Jack Rats!!

I just bought a Rat Terrier from a pet store a month ago.  He has papers and everything (which were not important to me anyway) but I don't have any way to contact the breeder.  I am wondering how big he will get.  He is three months old and weighs 8 lbs.  He started out with button ears and now one of the ears is started to perk up some.  When do the ears stop changing?  It really doesn't matter to me how he changes I am just curious.  I love my new puppy and I recommend a rat terrier to anyone that is interested.  They are just the cutest, smartest little things I've ever seen!

I have a 1 and 1/2 year old jack-rat named lulu bell. Lulu is very loving. In fact she has learned how to hug very young, and expects one from family members daily.  Lulu understands english, and did not potty train well. She thinks you have to go in the bathroom! She is now 30 pounds, most people think she is a fat jack russell. She burrows in the covers like most of the terriers. Thinks she is vicious, though very intimidated by boogie men. Barks loud and runs to hide. But she is our family and we love her even though she doesn't think she is a dog. She doesn't like other dogs only for the neighborhood rockweller, and will jump on him and play, loves dolls and will go to bed with them. I cannot live without her.

For all those of you who have listed and said that a jack rat is 2 different breads.. .well you know what? there are such things as mixed puppies. yes thats right folks.. mixed...
and the reason you cant find hardly any info on them ...is that they are not all that common... I am about to get one myself. I think that they are the greatest pet to have.. They have the personality of a jack russell but the additude of the rat terrier ... the rat terrier in them makes them much calmer and they are a bit smaller than the full breed jack or rat
the ears on the dogs vary from standing straight up to just the tips flopped and to the fully flopped ears... oh... and the since they are a mixed breed they wont be found on any akc or anykind of breed website... thats kind of the reason you cant get papers on them either...

people have been breeding the Jack Rats for years. All that can really be said for them is that they are all terrier. The size of is cross just depends on the size of the rat terrier bloodline. most rats are close to the size of the jacks, with some being a little larger and some quiet a bit smaller. They are not recognized by any breed registries that I know of unless CKC recognizes them now.

There are many sites on the net that have information related to the Jack mix Rat Terriers. I'm now a proud owner of a little 7 week old female, who when compared to other so-called registered pure bred dogs show more promise in conformation, attitude and trainibility than many other breeds I have worked with over forty years.

I had been looking to purchase a Jack Russel for many years and from the people who have owned them, I had found that they are very high strung, easliy trained but very independent. So, several weeks ago I decided to research The Mountain Fiest breed used for squirrel hunting in the south. In doing so, I found that the Fiest and the Rat Terrier are one and the same. Here-again I changed direction and started to search the net for all things Rat Terrier.

Last week I called a local breeder and made an appointment to see one of her little females, a beautiful thing but the cost was prohibitive. I posted want ads on many forums requesting help, wrote to several well know breeders from the East coast to the West coast, but could not find the right pup, or never even got a reply.

Then several days ago, I came across an ad for Jack mix Rat Terriers. At first I thought this is strange, the two breeds I always wanted in one dog. I called and made arrangements for me to see the litter.

Arriving and entering the well cared for home, I was greeted by a lady and six young children carrying several beautiful pups. I take pride in being able to select quality pups, and I'll tell you that every one of those pups looked great. After some talks on the pups, I asked to see the parents, the lady took me to the rear of her house and there stood a Jack Russell male about 12 inches high and a rat terrier maybe 13 inches in height. The dogs were built, very nice and both had exceptional temperment, so a decision was made to buy the smallest female. What's funny about all this, is that after I purchased the pup, I started to do additional research and found out that this combination has been mated for some time, and the results have been very favorable.

In the short time that I have owned this beauty, I can honestly say that she will definately fulfill all my family needs; from companion, to hunter, to friend. It doesn't take one long to evaluate the potential of this or similar matings.

For the owners of the Jack mix Rat Terriers, only you  know what you have, and only you can apprciate this mix breed for it's loving nature and sureness of self. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Enjoy
Mike

Of course, we all know that Jack Russells and Rat Terriers are separate breeds.  When you have a parent of each, you make what some breeders call a "Jack-Rat."  They are excellent dogs!  I have a two-year-old male named Baxter.  He weighs 20 pounds and is an excellent companion!  He understands everything that we say to him, recognizes so many words, and is an excellent guard dog, too!  This dog exemplifies the best of both breeds even though he is a mix.

I have a 5 year old Jack-Rat named Charlie.
My wife bought him to breed with our rat terrier that we got from the pound. When she brought Charlie home, I thought great another dog. It wasn't long thereafter that Charlie stole my heart and became my best friend. He follows me everywhere and sleeps under the covers at my feet every night. He understands everything I say and does everything I say. I have never seen a smarter, more loyal dog. Charlie fears nothing no matter the size but yet is very gentle with our children. Truely a pleasure and a joy, Charlie isn't a mutt, he's just part of the family

I just got a Jackratt a couple of months ago.  Little Jack is 4 months old now and was very easy to potty train.  He was at first really bad about biting and nipping, but has learned "no bite", and usually stops if you say it. The little guy is VERY hyper, loves people and loves to chase the cat!!! One thing that I am concerned about is that Jack Russels are known for not being good with children and cats.  I did not know this when buying my expensive "mutt" (with papers). I have a 21 month old.  I also have a cat.  If anyone has an older Jackratt with young children please let me know how they are.  I hope he is more Rat than Russel!!! A Jackratt website is a must!!!!!!!!!!

My Jack-rat, Suzie, is turning 1 year old this month.  These dogs have very distinct personalities, love people and other dogs, are extremely smart, and hilarious.  If you get one of these dogs, throw out your television because they will be all the entertainment you need.  Full of energy, affection, and loyalty, Suzie is a hit at parties and most other social situations.  She never gets tired of playing, and will obey everything you tell her.  Do not get this breed of dog if you want a mellow, relaxed dog to just lay around. This dog is hyper as all hell and demands lots of attention! If they don't get as much attention as they need they become mischievous.  But, anyone who wants a constant laugh and is ready for fun, a Jack Rat is the dog for you!

Here is my website with loads of Jack info. While we don't specialize in Jack/Rat mixes we do have a lot of members with this mix that I'm sure would have a lot of info to offer.

I recently discovered that my little guy is a jack-rat.  He's about 11 mo. old and weighs around 20 pounds.  Oscar has more energy than anything I've ever seen.  He's very sweet, extremely smart, and must always be the center of attention.  When I got him, I was told that he a beagle/ dachschund mix.  He has so much personality and I couldn't imagine life without the little guy!

My husband and I just adopted a 9 week old "Jack Rat" yesterday.  When we went to see the puppies, mom and dad were both there..I really could not tell which one was the Rat and which one was the Jack.  They both looked more Rat than Jack to be honest. Anyway, we brought the little girl home.  She is a sweetheart and is already a "daddys girl"  One of your replies, a person named Donna, kept saying this dog is a mutt...just a mutt, a mutt, a mutt, a mutt...dont be offended by this reply. Some people are just that way.

Jack Rats are not mutts!!!  They are a recognized breed in the UK and are very well becoming a very POPULAR breed here in the U.S. They are soon to be recognized by the AKC!!!!!  Get a clue!

We just got a little jack/rat from an amish farm.  He is SO cute and SO smart.  Already at 9 weeks he does his duty outside.  He gives lots of kisses and loves to play, and SO friendly. Hes our little Cashton and we love him.

The Rat Terrier was originally bred from other breeds (as all were). The parent breeds were Jack Russel Terrier and Manchester Terrier (Min Pin). Early photos of Rat Terriers depict a dog looking more like one or the other. However, the breed has advanced very much since then and is now it's own. Rat Terriers are not regonized by AKC, however- they are regonized by the FSS (Foundation Stock Service), an organization composed by the AKC. Sort of like a waiting list- they could be accepted in a few months- or it could be several years.

A Jack-Rat as you call it is not a purebred and the only thing that they could be registered with is the CKC (Not Canadian Kennel Club), who will slump to the lowest and register mix breeds for people to say that their mutt litter is pure to fool people into buying them. Ridiculous, but true.

People who intensionally breed mix breeds are discraces to the dog world. There is a difference in trying to create a new breed- which is having an organization of other lovers who will breed to get it on it's way and to a better standard and finding out the circomstances. A Jack Rat can never, even be a purebred consittering that that would be breeding the original breed back to the offspring. Ruining everything that these breeders of the Rat Terrier worked for.

The answer by Donna is actually somewhat inaccurate. I think she misunderstood you- I knew that what you were saying is that you have a "Jack Rat Terrier" which is what they call the hybrid of a Jack Russell and a Rat Terrier. I thought Donna's "If you have a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier, you have a mutt and that would be anyone's guess where to get info" remark was rather snide considering the Jack Rat Terrier is often intentionally bred and a recognized hybrid of the American Canine Hybrid Club. Having owned both, I think that the two breeds are more similar to each other than the breeds that make up other intentional hybrids, such as the labradoodle or shi-mo. You may find more information about canine hybrids breeds at the following sites:

I have a Jack-Rat named Madison. She is about 9 months. Right now i think she weighs about 25 lbs. She is wild and crazy. We call her Yah-Yah because that is the sound she makes when she is very excited. I was wondering, when she gets a little older she will be a little less wild?
I really hope not because she is too cute.

My dog is actually half jack rat and half boxer/german shepherd...what a mix!!!  He is black and tan, has lots of energy and can jump really high! I thought it was unique that he was black and tan, since the other puppies in the litter were either white with black spots, white with brown spots, or just plain brown.  Oh, and he is about the size of a jack russell but very muscular with a long body and very short legs like a dachsund
