I need to know what martial art teachec me the most in the least amount of time. I heard Judo and kick-boxing was good for that. I'm not independent, so I can't spend four years (and hundreds of dollars) learning how to defend myself properly.

The best martial art that can be learned in the shortest amount of time and still be effective for self defense is a little known martial art from Israel called Krav Maga. Do a general search under your search engine to find a school near you.

Good luck!!!

I've heard good things about Krav Maga as well, though I would second the kickboxing (Muay Thai) and add the Filipino martial arts (Kali/Arnis/Escrima). Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is somewhat over-hyped for self-defense, but an excellent style for what it is none the less.

definately krav maga, been around tried different arts none is as easily remembered in time of combat. teaches passive person to become imediately aggressive.I don't knock traditional styles but it takes years to be able to defend yourself against an aggressive street thug.krav maga will teach you to hold your own in a real fight in a month.

The important element here is the time you, yourself will put into art. There is no art better than the other. The best technique is the one that works. When in a confrontation, you should automatically go into automatic mode. If you train hard in what ever self-defense system you do, then to have a high chance of victory. Seek out opportunity for victory. No consideration is given to anything unreasonable; the heart of the matter is to use the power of the knowledge of MA to gain victory any way you can. This must be worked out thoroughly.

Any martial art is a god one, some may just take longer to learn, but after a while all are equally effective. I have studied Krav Maga, and it is a good self defense weapon. It is quite simple and easy to learn, but like all arts, you must continually try to your best at it, in order to make it useful. and once you start, it is best not to stop, otherwise your skills will rust and fall apart.
