All midwivs have to have a written collaborative with a on staff physician from that hospital.  That physician is only responsible as a back up for collaboration and are suppose to read  and sign 10% of the charts.  They are not legally responsible for any decisions that midwife makes clinically anymore that they are responsible for another  MD clinically.  Everyone is suppose to provide medical standard of care even if it looks different as in midwifery!
