You can buy bacteria-resistant bedding that will cut down on odors. Remember to clean the cage often and every once and a while to scrub it good. Is your cage wood, because wood asorbs the odors. You should have plastic.

Good luck

You can also buy from good animal stores, cage freshner for rabbits and guinea pigs and also scented shavings such as lemon which will help reduce the odors. I have six guinea pigs all living in wood cages out doors and mine dont give off such odors. Maybe you should have your guinea pig checked out incase it has a infection which is making its odor smell so bad. A good idea is also having a run on the grass in which it can get fresh air and also stretch its legs.

best of luck

Hey, I'm sorry about that. Both my Guinea Pigs have been smelling lately too. So, I use a good smelling Lysol spray(vanilla candle) and spray it around the cage, not on the piggies(that can kill them) I am doing that until I go to Pet smart for a Guinea Pig Odor Spray. It really works,,,,best of luck

Another tip I just found out, like I said, use a spray, but the real problem is the urine absorbs into the pine shavings and really stinks, so try cleaning the cage whenever you smell something before it gets worse! Let me know how it goes!

Don't cut down on food, or spray Lysol around the cage. Get a better bedding material, I use a gray paper like material that works great. I have 2 guinea pigs and a hampster in my room and they don't smell at all. Also wash out your cage at least every 2 weeks. Good Luck!

we just use newspaper shreddings every day and whole newspaper on the bottom of the cage so that the guinea pig bedding does not absorb the smell of pee and poop.
its worked for us!

Put some warm water in a small tub and let the little fella have a bath. We use a mild pet shampoo found at any pet store or even wal-mart. Put enough water in so the pigs belly will touch water. I guarantee you notice the difference. And our (Beethoven) loves it...

Hi i have a guinea pig and when ever i clean out her cage i always use sno-bol because it get rid of oder and if you have alot of crust where your guinea pig poops and pees it gets rid of that to.but be careful with this product it is really bleach but it works GREAT!it sortof gets rid of oder but when you put this in the cage you might want ot put down some baking soda after that.and i would recomend lysol for your room.and to keep your room smelling fresh i would clean its cage ever day, thats what i do with my guinea pig and if you run out of shavings, sheded paper would do terrific!!!!hope this anvice works good luck!

My cousin has a rabbit, and it smells bad if
she doesn't clean it. The rabbit smells a
whole lot better when she cleans the cage.
Make sure you scrub the cage with hot water,
and dry it , good . If you wish, spray the room the guinea pig is in . DO NOT spray the guinea pig or cage. The spray could kill the little animal and it could breath in the spray and give it intestinal problems. It should then smell a whole lot better.

I agree with Kim. I had 4 guinea's for a while and they stunk really bad becuase I used pine shavings, then I tried using that recycled paper bedding and that cut their smell down considerably. Also, if he is a large guinea-pig, try spot cleaning every, or every other day.
Good Luck

Hey just change the cage more often because I'm sure that would really help. If your Guinea is still smelling and you've cleaned her cage get her checked out by your local vet just in case. Oh you might also want to give her bath when you clean her cage every once in a while because then you know she isn't dirty herself. Tell me how it all goes....Good Luck Bye

We have a boy guinea and we clean his metal cage everyday and use odor proof material.  We still smell urine after just one day.  Is it possible that we are feeding him too many carrots?  Also, if we bought him a soft bed would he just urinate in it?  We are probably going to have to give him back if we cant find a solution.  It is so time consuming cleaning his cage everyday!!

Definitely don't spray Lysol around the cage. Also Pine and Cedar bedding are very bad for guinea pigs. You should clean your guinea pig's cage at least once a week and give them regular baths, but don't use regular shampoo and be sure the water is shallow enough for them.  you can buy special shampoo at pet stores. At Petco they even have a scented shampoo.

We had two guiney pigs that didn't stink and changed the cage every 2 weeks.  We lost one PG when the neighbor was watching them and the dog got loose (but that's another story).  They bought a replacement that is cute and friendly but stinks to high heaven even though we change the wood chips every other day.
Anyway my experience is that some stink and some don't but I don't know why.

DO NOT spray sprays around the cage. thats a waste of time and money. all you need is the right flooring material and bedding to eliminate the odors.

i think something that makes a huge difference is not starving ur guinea pig cuz how would u like that??? or spraying lysol around. odors like that just make it hard for ur guinea pig to breathe. all u really need to do is simple... bye high quality bedding and clean the cage often. also ur guinea pig will also smell like ur cage so i would clean ur guinea pig 2. It always feels good 2 take a bath!!!

First, is your guinea a male? If so, you can have him neutered. Male guinea pigs give off a natural odor, having his boy parts removed would also reduce any spaztic and messy tendencies he has

Hey,let me let you in on a little secret,    DONT LISTEN TO THAT RUDE FOOL WHO TOLD YOU TO CUT DOWN ON THE FOOD AND CLEAN HIS CAGE OFTEN!!!           plus you should NEVER spray those perfumes around the cage like that guy told you, that can travel into the cage, I bet in a couple of weeks he'll find his poor, innocent guinea pigs dead.                                   Sorry, fellow who does that, I am not trying to be mean, its just you shouldn't try something so risky!

I just got mt guinea pig yesterday but I've done alot of research on how to care for them and clean them. You already know, from everyone else, that it could be the bedding so I wont repeat that, other than, that if you do have pine bedding to definetly change that because the odor coming off of that can be toxic to guinea pigs and I don't know if there can be bladder problems caused by it but if I recall correctly, I think there are some cases.Anyway my other suggestion was that at PetSmart they have sprays to put on the guinea pig and in the cage, but if I were you I would go to all the nearest pet stores and just see what they have for guinea pigs.Actually, I had the same exact problem with a hamster about a year ago, and the spray is what I used and it worked wonderfully to cover up the smell, but it turned out that she had an unfixable bladder condition and I didn't want to get rid of her, but I had to make sure that I sprayed that stuff every morning or my room would stink to high heaven by the time I got home from school.

Good Luck!!!

My advise is if u feed your guinea pig vegetable and fruits, try to cut down on the amount u give your guinea pig. When it starts smelling, u can also clean it then. Some guinea pigs make more smells when they poop more or they just smell more.hope it works!!:)
