with a coffee machine, a latte is like a cappuccino (served in a cup with hot milk,2-3cm head of froth)except served in a glass, with more milk and less froth.A macchiato is like an espresso (or short black, served in a cup or glass it is 30-40ml of good, strong coffee)but with a dash of cold milk.

a latte is simply a condensed shot of espresso "diluted" with milk.  It can be hot or cold.  It doesn't contain foam on top, otherwise it would be considered a cappuccino(it has a "cap" of foam)

I thought a macchiato was an espresso topped with a dash of frothed milk.  A cafe macchiato was the espresso topped with milk.
