i'm running my computer to my receiver, but through about 40 ft of headphone extension cable and then to RCA in the back of the receiver, but i get a fairly loud hum.  The hum does not change when i change the volume on the computer.  my assumption is that i need lower gauge three conductor wire.  any better suggestions?

There are several issues here: the quality of your soundcard and the quality and length of your signal cable, and ground loop.

The easiest way to solve all of these problems is to buy a device like Xitel HiFi-Link, M-Audio Sonica, or M-Audio Transit. These devices connect to the USB connector of your computer and to the RCA connector of your receiver (for a digital solution see below).

M-Audio offers the best audio quality (24/96 or even 24/192) and works two ways (play and record) but the Xitel comes with 30ft high quality cable (extendable).

Note: If you have a surround receiver with digital input even better results are possible and you can play up to 7.1 surround with the M-Audio devices. Xitel offers the Pro HiFi link with digital output.
