Reggae comes from Jamaica in the caribbean sea. It was made in the 50s - 60s. The greatest reggae star were Bob Marley who died in braincancer 1982. Rastafarianism were also made in Jamaica, they didnt have churches so they sat in the "forests" and smoked herbs like cannbis. Reggae were not really popular in the 60s or 70s but in the 80s it came a bit more popular.

Origins of Reggae

1940’s in Jamaica (Caribbean stye of music)

Influenced by mento, calypso, R&B, Cuban music, and American pop and jazz

1) mento: folk music of Trinadad that has elements of church music and plantation work songs.
2) American music (pop and r&b): Become popular in Jamaica in the 1950’s, influenced reggae beat.
3) Cuba, Barbados and other West Indian island music: musicians and singers immigrated to Jamaica.

Started out as a Jamaican imitation of American pop songs with Jamaican singers and musicians covering the songs. The Jamaican music started to include mento style beats in which the guitar would strike at the offbeat. This was the beginning of a new type of music called reggae, which would later morph into different types such as ska, rock steady, and dancehall.

personally i think reggae is a very great type of music despite the fact that potheads formed it. Lets forget about the pot though for a second. Lets focus on how well bob Marley did as a reggae artist and how he was the biggest reggae start that ever lived. He was awesome. especially the songs i shot the sheriff and get up stand up. Those were 2 of his biggest hits. If Bob Marley were to be still alive to this date i would be the biggest fan.

What is Reggae Music?

Reggae was developed in Jamaica in late 1960's. It’s a type of music  that has come
out of many other music styles, including traditional Jamaican music, ska, mento,
rock steady ,dub and American R&B.

Reggae is made up upon a rhythm and a strong back beat (known as the Skank).

Reggae is often associated with the Rastafarian movement, which influenced many
reggae musicians in the 1970's and 1980's. Many subjects are sung in Reggae,
including faith, love, sexuality and social issues. The music is often very simple–
sometimes a whole track will have no more than one or two chords. For example,
the song “Exodus” by Bob Marley is almost entirely sung ion A-minor chords.
These simple chords can inflict a relaxing hypnotic tune.

Instruments

Drums - A standard drum kit is generally used in reggae, some reggae drummers
use an extra timbale. A wide range of percussion instrumentation is used in reggae.
Bongos are often used to play improvised patterns with African-style music.

Bass - The bass guitar often plays the dominant role in reggae, and the drum and
bass together is usually called the riddim. Many reggae singers have released
different songs recorded over the same riddim.

Guitars - The rhythm guitar in reggae usually plays the chords on something called
the off-beat. It has a very, short and scratchy chop sound, almost like a percussion
instrument.

Piano - In reggae the piano usually plays chords on  off beats in certain a style,
adding body and warmth to the rhythm guitar.

Horns - Horn sections are frequently used in reggae, they are often played in
introductions and counter-melodies. The reggae horn selection includes  saxo-
phones, trumpets and trombones.

Vocals - The vocals in Reggae is the main part, singing along to the backing beat
makes Reggae a catchy type of music.

It’s a traditional African and Caribbean music and in Jamaican ska and rock steady
It was Bob Marley who made reggae into an international phenomenon
It all began in the 1950s-1960s, but wasn’t very well known
In 1970s reggae became a success so other names started coming out and it was then when reggae became a established genre of music
Reggae has influenced many other types of music such as dancehall, ska, rock steady and others.

Reggae rocks my socks ...its way better than any other music like MCR , lilly allen or MIKA etc

Reggae is a music genre developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. Reggae music has also been heavily influenced by Rasta music and philosophy. Many Rastafarians were asking black people (through reggae music) to recognise and take pride in their African roots. . Reggae song lyrics deal with many subjects, including faith, love, relationships, poverty, injustice and other broad social issues!
