Is there any way to transfer a cassette tape to a CD? Do I need an actual appliance or is there a way to do it from the CD burner on my computer?

A way I have used in the past is to use a Walkman or tape deck hooked to your computer through a headphones patch cable (simple cable with male adapters on either end ~$4.00) and plug into your computer's microphone port on the sound card. You will need a sound recording software program; there are many of them that are good, I sometimes recommend Goldwave as you can do editing to the final file if needed. Simply set up the levels correctly, record into your program as a WAV file, and burn to CD.

Your microphone jack on your computer doesn't provide enough bandwidth to get a good sound quality out of the tape cassette. If you happen to have a line in or firewire port on your computer, I would recommend using that. There are several cables out there that has a headphone jack at one end and a firewire jack on the other.

I have been transferring tapes to MP3 for a while now, and I was wondering about the quality of tape. What is the bandwidth or audio resolution of standard cassette tape? I have been wondering what is the best compression to use for the MP3's, is 128k 44100hz ok, or should it be higher. Maybe I can set it lower and get away without too much loss. I haven't found anyone who can answer this convincingly yet.
