The reason you can't find any information is that the term 'teacup' chihuahua is not an actual sub-breed.  Poodles do come in Standard, Miniature and Toy, but chihuahuas are not separate.  There are differences in composition (body arrangement) and size, but they are all within the parameters of one single breed of chihuahua.  Terms like 'teacup', 'deer', 'applehead' and etc.
describe the appearance of a dog, but are mostly used by breeders to make a dog sound rare or 'special' so that they can justify charging more money for them.

There are a few threads here with some people being very adamant that There Are So different 'sub-breeds' and that swear that different compositions relate to different temperaments.  Other people such as myself agree that not all chihuahuas look the same, but that every chihuahua has its own personality regardless of what they look like.

My older chihuahua looks like a tiny fawn, my younger one looks like a miniature pinscher.  Older Gremlin is alpha and weighs 3 pounds, many people would consider her a teacup deer.  My younger Nixie is 5 pounds and is much mellower, she is beta and she knows it.

The smaller dogs tend to have more medical problems such as slipping kneecaps, in the past year I have spent over $1000 on vet bills for hernia repair, pulling of retained baby teeth, etc. for Gremlin.  I don't regret a penny of it, I knew when I adopted her that she might need more care.

The best resource I can recommend is the book Chihuahuas for Dummies.  It's very thorough, talks about the different appearances of chihuahuas and is by far the best book I have on the care and maintenance of these adorable furry little creatures.

There is no such thing as a teacup chi. I am a breeder of chis for about 6 years. The really tiny chis have more medical problems and usually much shorter lifespans. I have a 3 lb chi named Skeeter that I love immensely, but she has breathing problems, and problems with her eyes. Skeeter is a small Chihuahua, not a t-cup. You are much better off with a chi that will weigh 5-6 lb or more than one that is very small and may only live a year or two, and only after spending thousands of dollars on vet bills.
Also, there is no way for a breeder to guarantee you a pup will only be up to 3 lb or up to 4 lb. It is impossible to judge how big or small a chi pup will be. Beware high puppy prices and breeders selling you a "t-cup" chi.

Please listen to me when I say this..there is no such thing as a teacup Chihuahua.  I currently have a little boy, 3 months old and he weighs 8 ozs!!!  He is not a teacup he is a little bitty guy that requires a lot of work and probably will not live that long!  No regrets by all means...he has taught me a lot but if you do not want the heartache stick with your 4 to 6 pounders.  Goodness a four pound dog is tiny!  And they are much more agile.  This little one can not even walk around the house with my 4 pound Chi or my 10 pound pomeranian because he is so small.  Please take me word for it.

Everyone who is looking for a really small "teacup" or super small chi needs to be carefull!  Do not buy from Becky Bice runs Teacup and Toy pets. com from TX.  I looked on the Better Business Bureau web-site for Dallas TX and there are so many complaints that there is an entire page dedicated to this business.  Dead puppies arriving, no puppies arriving you name it, if it sounds shady, then this business has done it.  Never buy a puppy from a store! Online or otherwise!  If the breeder doesn't give you 101 questions, they are just puppy mill farmers!

For a Chihuahua to truly be called a teacup they need to weigh less than 2lbs at adulthood.  If someone tries to sell you one with parents that are over 2 lbs then it will probably be over 2 lbs.  The rut is normally the smallest at adulthood.  We use to breed them.  Don't trust people, they lie about the size of the dogs all the time.

The best way to guess what size the chihuahua will be is to look at the feet of the puppy.  And I concur about the larger chihuahuas being much easier to care for--I have had a 5 lb chihuahua, a 2 lb chihuahua and a 3 lb chihuahua.  I live in Colorado and the 2 and 3 lb chihuahuas require a heated bed in winter, preferably off the floor and out of drafts.  They also require sweaters to wear in the winter time, the 2 lb chihuahua sometimes two.  I made my sweaters for them by cutting up old socks, wool socks working best.  Two pound female chihuahuas are too small to breed and  three pound chihuahuas are marginal.  Even with a four pound chihuahua, you may still end up at the vet's if you let her breed. If I were going to get a chihuahua today, I would look for one that is probably going to be between four and six pounds--small enough to be cute, hardy enough to be reasonable to care for.

They is no thing as a teacup. Puppy mills sell these 'rare' dogs for more money. You obviously have not researched a breed or anything. I hope if you do buy one, you spend thousands of dollars on medical bills, and have it die in your arms because you promoted a puppy mill breeder.

'Just so that everyone knows, there is no such thing as a teacup chihuahua. "teacup" chihuahuas are just bred from the runts of the litters of an already tiny dog. chihuahuas are unhealthy enough already because of inbreeding and poor breeding practises designed to make them look the way they do. Buying a teacup chihuahua is encouraging an industry that is cruel to animals. If you want a dog that small, get a hamster.'

I believe it is cruel to breed chihuahuas into "teacup chihuahuas". It gives them a lot of problems that chihuahuas have, and a lot of their own. Breeding them too small will give them a short life span.

A 5-6 lb chihuahua could have a life span up to 16 years ( if properly cared for and coming from the right breeder. I know by experience).

A 3-4lb chihuahua will have a shorter life span, probably about 12 years.

A 1-2 lb chihuahua is just too darn small! This should be cruelty to animals to breed them this small. They will have multiple problems and will have a life span from 5-9 years max.

Not enough to stop you from buying the latest "pocket pet" trend?

You will spend $500 min. for a "teacup chihuahua" which might not even be a teacup!! In every litter of pups you have the "runt", people usually sell the "runt" as a "Teacup Chihuahua". It will soon grow the size of its litter mates with the proper care.

Still not proof enough that this is a wrong idea?

You will spend nearly $2,000 for your "teacup chihuahua". You think its a good breeder, but if it was a good breeder wouldn't they be about bettering the Chihuahua breed instead of making them into a fashion statement with health problems?

Okay, here comes your big proof.

YOU WILL SPEND THOUSANDS IN VET BILLS!! The pocket pets are good pets, i agree, but they have the same temperament as the normal sized chihuahua, with more health problems.

Little do people know that these tiny breeds have to eat every 3 hours or they could die!!

Going to get up in the night to make sure your "baby" eats?

These are facts about the "Teacup Chihuahua". None of this is false nor make believe. I have a few teacups which I'verescued and their vet bills are making a dent in my pocket book.

wow what a shallow breeder you must be very greedy and/or uneducated, 1. you are scamming people, there is no such thing as a teacup chihuahua if you knew the breed standard, you would know that. Also if you were a good breeder you would know that the AKC does not support the "teacup myth"
2. you maybe uneducated, so i suggest visiting www.chihuahua-people.com the people there will surley help you to become a better breeder or at least a more educated one.

heres the thing... i am looking for a teacup chi because yes its small but thats only what i would be allowed to get because i already have a big dog and my parents would'nt settle for another one but i really want another plus it will be easier for me to take care of it. i've read about their health problems and i'm worried on how i can tell if one is healthy or a lower chance of having problems. i found out that if a dog is at a low price probably means that they were'nt well- taken care of meaning medical wise. but my parents wont pay a high price for such a little dog. any advice?

Hello,
My name is Kirsten and I am 15 years old. For my 16th birthday I am getting a car from my parnets, of course. But I would like to get myself a dog. My cousin used to have a blue Chihuahua, I loved it. But I like dogs that stay small and that I can carry around with me everywhere. But they have to be loveing and calm. So I am looking for a T-cup Chihuahua, A Blue T-Cup Chihuahua. Am I looking for the right kind of dog for me?

Your are not kidding about vet bills tea cup chi are expensive dogs to keep I just got her about a week ago and Ive already spent over 300 dlls in vet bills.  the breeder didn't tell me that these dogs run the risk of becoming hypoglacemic I thought my dog was dying and rushed her to the vet
I had to pay 300 dlls and that doesn't include shots that she will have to get in a couple of weeks totally 185 dollars

Ive been trying to research them as mush as possible, but I cant find very much info. I dont want my future to be more than 5 pounds full grown. With ALL of the information about this at your fingertips, I still find it difficult to believe that there are still people out there who think there is such a thing as teacup Chihuahuas.  Geez people, get on the internet and type the words into a search engine, and you will find all kinds of information about it.  There are RUNTS in any breed -- extremely tiny Chis are nothing more than runts.  They can have many health issues and are a nightmare to treat if they become sick or get a broken or shattered bone.  And one lady that claims to breed teacups, I've got news for you -- if you get puppies that are 7 to 9 oz, that is HUGE!!  My pups at birth are on average 3.5 to 5 oz. and they mature to be 4 to 6 lb. dogs, so you really need to stop putting out such BS!!!

I wanted a teacup chihuahua for a long time and knew they were hundreds of dollars I watched our local news in the classifieds and found a family that was selling theirs for less and she is the love of my life, she is a very loving dog and the best thing  I could have asked for. If you are looking for one I would tell you to log onto your local news via internet if they have a classified section and see if they are being advertised on there. My chihuahua is the best pet I could have asked for.

I was always looking for a 'teacup' Chihuahua and when I researched long enough, I learned that there was no such thing. I finally ended up purchasing a baby chi and fell head over heels in love. She was 12 ozs. when I picked her up and 5 months later she is 5 1/2 pounds. It doesn't matter to me anymore that she isn't 3 pounds full grown or 'teacup' size forever. We had the tiny, small time and I am over it! I love her no matter what. In fact, she was so small for the first three months, that I was a nervous wreck! I had to watch her CONSTANTLY. One wrong step, and you could break their back! I like it now that she is more 'durable' and very healthy! So relax and just request a chihuahua puppy. This breed is the smallest in the WORLD! If they are true Chihuahuas, they are going to be small enough! Don't worry!

There IS such thing as a teacup chihuahua, the reason people are saying there aren't is because they want you to buy their 6 lb dogs, and they are ignorant and do not understand the basic facts of genetics. Teacups are selectively bred over many generations creating a smaller dog, not runts. Runts are unhealthy, do not buy runts. Only buy a teacup if its entire pedigree is filled with the same size dogs, not larger sized dogs.

I agree with others stating the myth about tcups.  I am a breeder and love my babies, and some are 2oz when born, and these are the ones I watch very carefully.  I have spent countless hours caring and feeding small puppies to avoid health problems.  I do have some really tinies and other toys.  Please see my website for more information
