My shih tzu always wants to eat his feces after he goes to the bathroom.  I have asked the vet and they suggested putting some meat tenderizer on his food before he eats.  I tried this, but he is still doing this. I can't hardly stand it when he does this.  Any suggestions.

We were having the same problem with our new puppy and our vet said to take him out on a leash and when he goes to eat his #2 pull him back and say no. Then pick up the pile.  The also suggested using a squirt gun.  When he turns to eat his #2 squirt him a little in the face.  We are using the leash and it is working very well.  Hope this helps

In regards to Carman'sanswer, I agree. My 5 year old male shih tzu ate his #2 for some time when he was a baby. The leash thing worked but, when he poops in the house when I'm gone, I know that he still eats it because he leaves just a little or there would be a #2 stain on my leather couch. He knows he did a "bad boy" and that;s why he tried to hide it. Sounds like your dog thinks it's a bad thing, even when he does it outside. I give mine a treat EVERYTIME he does it outside.

There is a medication that you can buy at the pet store that will take care of the puppy eating his or her own #2.  It worked for a friend of mine'sdog but thank goodness my shih tzu hasn't started that (yet!).

Our puppy does the same thing.  The vet told me to break up 1/2 a clorets mint & put it in her food.  They like the taste going in but not when it comes out!  It seems to work when I put it in her food.

I have a 5 month old shih tzu female, and she eats her feces.  She knows it is wrong, because she waits until I am on the phone, or not paying attention.  I go to check on her and there she is...having herself a banquet.  I have tried something called Deter, but it doesn't work.  I try to watch her all the time, but she is really good when I watch.  She is 90% housetrained, but since we live in a condo, she uses training pads on the patio.  It is really starting to bother me.
