Is the newfoundland the largest dog in the world

I think I can help a little here. The American Mastiff might be the largest dog in the world. Before I bought my puppy, I did alot of research on this. The minimum height for this breed is 30" with most between 35" - 37". The weight at maturity is between 200 and 250 lbs. Our dog is now 32" at the shoulder and 145 pounds. They don't start bulking up with muscle until after 2 years old. I saw our dog's uncle and it was the biggest canine I have ever seen in my life. You can check out the website of the breeder at www.flyingwfarms.com. The pictures are misleading though. You have to see them to understand how big they are. Our dog is already dwarfing the Great Danes in town and he is only 14 months old!!

Irish Wolfhound's are between 105-125 lbs. and 35-35 inches at the shoulder. Great Danes's are between 100-120 lbs. and 28-32 inches at the shoulder. English Mastiff's are between 175-190 lbs. and 27.5-30 inches at the shoulder. German Sheperd Dog's are 75-95 lbs. and 22-26 inches at the shoulder. Although the Largest Dog in the world about to be recorded is an English Mastiff. Every article on this web site talks about heaviest and tallest dogs at the shoulder, except one says there is an eight foot long dog (do you mean European zoo lion?). How come no one except one mentions length of dogs? Could the dog that is five foot high at the shoulder be a typographical error to mean five foot long? I am six feet high and one foot shorter than me is very very tall for a dog. Secondly, until I discovered this website, I thought Irish Wolfhound is longest dog, not tallest at the shoulder. Secondly, I saw web sites saying the Mastiff is the heaviest; but I never read of English Mastiff or Neomastiff, so I learned something today. But, I also heard from a web site that the Greater Swiss Alpine Mountain dog is the largest dog. But I also wondered, Great Danes seem very high at the shoulder, I never read of Great Dane being largest until today; maybe, I thought Irish Wolfhound is the longest, Great Dane is tallest which everyone had forgot until this website pointed it out, and Greater Swiss Mountain Alpine dog is secretly the largest, with Mastiff being generally considered the largest. So, this is my posting. Thank you. Secondly: Maybe ten years ago, there was a media article about a Japanese company that had the idea to come up with a new world's largest dog breed by breeding various kinds of largest dogs. Yes the English Mastiff is the Largest.. aka, Heaviest dog. No doubt about it. Number two would be the st bernard. then after that you have the Neopolitan Mastiff, the Newfy and other assorted Mastiffs. (not all Mastiffs are AKC breeds, there for, a dog like the Douge de Bordeux (from Turner and Hootch fame)might not be fully recognized.. but then again the AKC is not the only organization out there and quite a few others recognize other breeds as they're own "breed" as opposed to a branch off of a current breed. Example the Newfoundland Landseer is considered a Newfoundland by the AKC, but by pretty much every other Org, the Landseer is its own Breed and not a Newf at all.) Tallest is a split between a Great Dane and an Irish Wolf Hound. Though the GD is much thicker. Now I'll be the first to point out that Scooby Doo was around 5'5" and with all the Scooby snacks he ate, he'd weight about 300. So taking that into consideration, the Dane could push for it. Or... I spent too much time in the Back of the Mystery Machine with Daphne and Velma.

In my research there are lots of different people claiming the worlds largest dog in the world and it could mean different things? Burt Ward (the original Batman from the Batman and Robin series has Avalanche a Great Dane that is 43.5" at the withers and 270+lbs. But in the Encyclopedias it says that Wolfhounds are tallest and Mastiffs are heaviest. My dane is 39" at the withers and only 180 healthy lbs. Keep in mind that dogs can be very overweight and the ones I see holding these records are usually very overweight and usually will die at a much younger age due to this obesity. And all breed books seem to be wrong about the average heights and weights to any of the extra large breeds.

The heavies dog ever recorded was the old english mastiff at around 340 pounds and the tallest dog ever recorded was a great dane named shamgret danzas which was 42 and a half inches tall at the shoulders and over 240 pounds. On average the great dane and irish wolfhound are the same height the minimum to show for both is around 32 for males at the shoulders but they average around 36 for both it is less for females. Irish wolfhounds and great danes were breed together to make each other. Originally the mastiff and wolfhound in the 1500s and then after the wolfhounds were almost extinct in the 1800s the used the great dane to revitalize the wolfhound, which is why both breeds our so similar

The Mastiff is probably the biggest dog in the world. In 1989 Guinness recorded an 8-year old Mastiff named Zorba at 343 pounds, standing 37 inches at the shoulder and 8 foot 3 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. While your Mastiff will probably not break this record, it will be a BIG dog - something to remember when you start training it as a puppy. Mastiffs make good family dogs and are great with children (although their size could cause injury to younger kids). They need the same exercise strategy as a human - starting mild and then increasing. Or, it is just as happy curling up on the rug. A good guard dog that will use its bulk to prevent access rather than resorting to more aggressive methods. Mastiffs will enjoy the company of other pets if they were properly socialized as a puppy. Their short coat is easy to groom with only occasional brushing.

The OEM "Old English Mastiff" is the Largest dog on Average by Bodyweight. Followed by the St Bernard and the Neopolitan Mastiff. But with all dogs, some of the same breed might be larger then others. Hence, you might run into a Neo that is 250lbs and a OEM that is 110lbs. But on Average the English is Largest. Tallest is pretty close to a tie, but nowadays its given to the Irish Wolf Hound, where a few years ago they would say The Great Dane. The Dane is more massive then the Irish. The largest dog was Zorba an OEM that weighed around 350lbs. I belive the current record holder for weight is a Neopolitan Mastiff at around 286lbs or something around that area. There has never been a 400lb dog. And about the American Mastiff. No such thing. The one you have is by Flying W Farms. They are an Individual, yet large Breeder that is trying to Develop their own breed. They even set the "official" standards for the breed. Why? Because they are the only ones that have it. Your American Mastiff is Just an English Mastiff that they have taken and tried to breed certain individuals for less drool, longer lifespan, etc. It's not a bad thing, thats just how it is though. FYI: The recent trend in Newfs, is that they are trying to reduce the size, and increase the health of the breed by trying to breed, lower end spectrum weights of the dog. (aka favor the 150lb one as oppossed to the 190lb one for Health reasons) Generally the larger the Dog, the shorter the life span is and more prone to disease. They are all Giant Dogs though.

I know for a fact that the largest dog in the HISTORY OF THE WORLD was Clifford, the BIG RED DOG. It's in the name for chrissakes. I mean, not only was Clifford GINORMOUS, but he was...red. Yes, people. Red. Like ketchup. Just look at this picture. I was able to take it just before he ate the surrounding houses and people. Ever heard of the town "Vifulgo?" I am sorry to anyone who thinks that a Great Dane is larger than an Old English Mastiff. I have owned both and I know for a fact that the Old English Mastiff is the largest dog in the world!!! A Great Dane is very close as far as height but over all in general...muscle, height and weight, a OEM beats a Great Dane! The daddy of my OEM is 240 pounds and stands 33 inches at the shoulder. Standing up on his hind legs he is just at 7 feet long. He is humongous!!! I have seen and had a VERY large Great Dane and used to think they were the largest until I met the OEM. My OEM is now 18 months old and stands 31 inches at the shoulder and weighs 175 pounds. He still has a long time til he stops growing. SO...sorry to all of you Great Dane owners.

I have a TRUE answer to this: Gibson is the Tallest CURRENT (AS IN ALIVE) dog in the world!!! He just beat the previous record which was also a great dane.... He is almost 43 inches at the shoulders, an is a therapy dog, and knows how to say "I Love You" He will be going to the 2006 Guinness book. No newfounland according to most sources is a large bread but not the largest. According to most sources anyway. Newfounland is 75cm of height in shoulders, and 62kg which translates to about 30'' and 137-138lbs It is an exilent water dog and is very intelligent. But there are many larger breads such as Leoneberger for example is now up to 80cm but it used to be 90 or more (90cm=3') Neapolitalian Mastiff is About same height as newfounland but it weights at very least 70kg(160 lbs) and I have heard of ones that weighted at 300+lbs same with the English Mastiff.The tallest dog is Irish wolf hound at minimum 37'' but it can go even up to 48''or in very rare cases more than that. St.Bernard is at minimum as tall as newfounland but there are some that exide 3' and it can weigh also at 300+lbs. Great Dane is another Large bread that is both tall and heavy Borzoi is also very tall but probably not as heavy as Newfounland Great Pireneyan are also very large and there are several kinds of herding dogs that are about equal to Newfounland they belong to a group of large dogs but not the largest.Steal Newfounland would probably make a great purchase especially if you live near water. I think the Neapolitan mastiff is the biggest, largest, heaviest, whatever dog in the world and thats true but even though all dogs are equal i personally i believe the Neo Mastiff is the best dog there is. with a weight record of over 400lbs, its also one of the top 3 tallest. don't doubt me. Irish Wolfhounds are the tallest, Great Danes are tall too, but there not one of the top heaviest. Neo Mastiff = heaviest and one of the tallest dogs ever recorded. though Danes and Wolfhounds Are Without a doubt two of the tallest dogs there definitely not the heaviest. as long as I'vebeen typing, my point is, Neo Mastiff is heaviest and one of the tallest and the Dane and Wolfhound are just tallest. Believe me, I know. I'ma Chinese guy.

Bulldog Mastiff is the largest dog. My vet had to cut his nails and the dog was given enough tranquilizer to kill a horse because it was extremely aggressive. Even with the tranquilizer and being pinned down, the dog still tried to bite the vet. She said, "Um, I'm NOT cutting this dog's nails because its crazy! This dog was first with a family who lived in the country and owned a little girl, but soon they had to give him up because at the dog's young age of just 4 months old, the dog had the little girl pinned up against the wall, with her feet off the ground! They gave the dog up to a guy who lived alone, but he eventually had to give him up b/c the dog broke down a whopping total of 3 bathroom doors while it was locked in there while company arrived. No one can seem to handle this dog unless they plan on hunting bear! People stopped breeding this type of dog for this very reason of their aggressiveness. The reason why they are so aggressive, is because in the 1800s they HAD to be, or they wouldn't survive. Hunters used to use them to help protect against bears and other larger animals while they were hunting for deer. The Bulldog Mastiff could take down a bear if it needed to and was able to because their adrenaline is extremely high when they feel their family or owner is in danger. In my opinion this dog is the strongest dog ever and they weigh in at over 400 lbs. These dogs were also used in the gladiator days to kill the soldiers placed in the arenas when chariots and all that stuff was around. Lions, tigers, and bulldog mastiffs were put in these gladiator arenas to kill the soldier. Anything that is used to do the kind of damage that a lion or tiger can do is the toughest dog in my book. The Bulldog Mastiff can take on Lions, and Tigers and Bears... Oh My!:)watch out for that little pup!

The Irish Wolfhound is considered the world�s tallest breed of dog. A male should be at least 32 inches tall and can be up to 34 inches, while a female should be at least 30 inches tall. The Great Dane is also a very tall dog, ranging from 30 to 32 inches tall for the male, though some can be as much as 34 inches tall. While the Irish Wolfhound and the Great Dane typically are a bit taller, the English Mastiff -- nicknamed the gentle giant -- and the Saint Bernard are generally considered the heaviest breeds. I'm sure that the Irish Wolfhound and the Great Dane are the tallest dogs but must of the time the Great Dane reach more than the average the books said, some can reach up to 36" inches or more and weight up to 200 lbs. If you compare a Great Dane with an Irish Wolfhound same weight same height at the shoulder the Great Dane would win, because his neck is longer and bigger chest. if you have any doubt go to www.guinnessworldrecords.com/content_pages/record. The largest dog is a ENGLISH MASTIFF.Maybe not the tallest the tallest is a Irish Wolf- hound but the ENGLSH MASTIFF average is about twice the size of a Irish Wolfhound average and the Great Dane is a mixed breed between a ENGLISH MASFIFF and a Irish Wolfhound but the Dane is still VERY, VERY small when com- pared to a Eng Mas but every breed of dog is made from two diffrent breeds because back then they had few breeds so they made more. But the ENGLSH MASTIFF is still by far the biggest DOG. English Mastiff 30 inches at shoulder and up 180lbs-280lbs Great Dane 30 inches at sholder and up 110lbs-130lbs Irish Wolfhound 32 inches at shoulder and up 105lbs-125lbs

I admit that Zorba stood 37 inches at the shoulder and was 8 feet 3 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Plus weighed more then 343 pounds. However I believe that this was a one in a million chance and most Mastiff do not pass 190 to 200 lbs. The Largest dog breed has got to be the Tibetan Mastiff (not that wimpy English bred one). They can grow an AVERAGE of 220 lbs, been known to tackle anything from wolves to leopards, and have massive jaws to make them look even bigger. They are my favorite dogfighting dog, but sadly, they have been dying out and you rarely see them in dogfights. You want a big dog then get over here to Tibet. For the record, the heaviest dog in the world was a Mastiff. Perennially, the heaviest living dog is usually a Mastiff, as well. The tallest dog on record was a Great Dane. That one was 42.5" tall at the shoulder. (A dog's height is always measured at the shoulder.) While the Irish Wolfhound's 'Breed Standard' has a minimum height 2" taller than the Great Dane's minimum height, I don't know of any Irish Wolfhound's being the tallest dog in the world, at any point. It could have happened, though. Typically, the tallest living dog is a Great Dane. Currently (as of August 2004, according to the Guinness World Record books), that title goes to "Gibson", a harelquin Great Dane, at 42.2" tall. Gibson is also the tallest dog in another way. When he stands on his hind legs, he's over 7' tall. The precise height is difficult to measure, as this is an unnatural stance for a dog, and there is a lot of variability in the dog's ability or desire to stretch its neck to its limit. He's said to be over 7'2", though. The previous title-holder for tallest living dog was also a Great Dane, at 41.5" tall. The Breed Standard for the Great Dane requires a minimum height of 28" for the females, and 30" for the males. Danes of this height are not common, though. Most are in the 32-38" range. Females are typically smaller than the males, in both height and weight, although there are 36", 170lb females out there.

And I quote from scoop magazine, "If you have, you have a few days to call up Guinness World Records before they hand over the Largest Dog award to "Hercules", an English Mastiff with a 38-inch neck and 282 pounds of pure dog. Nine-year-old David DeLauri of Lynn, MA overheard his father talking to the dog's guardian John Flynn earlier this week. The youngster had been reading the Guinness Book and was quick to point out that Hercules is a record-breaker. Sure enough, after faxing veterinary records to the Guinness office in New York, Mr. Flynn was notified that his pooch (does the word "pooch" still apply to dogs who weigh as much as Hulk Hogan?) will be listed as the official Largest Dog in the World unless someone else comes forward. A dog's size is measured in a few ways, height at shoulders, length, mass and neck perimeter. The heaviest dog on record was Aicama Zorba of La-Susa, an Old English mastiff owned by Chris Eraclides of London, England. "Zorba" weighted in at 343 lbs at his heaviest, in Nov. 1989 (he was also over 8'3" long from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail. The largest recorded dog in the world was 480lbs. It was an English Mastiff. Mastiffs are the heavest dog, but not the tallest. The tallest is the Irish Wolfhound. The tallest Wolfhound was a recorded 5 foot high at its shoulders. Hope this helps.

Great Dane is the largest, weighing in at above average and height is 3 times that of a newfoundland.http://dogtracker.slweb.com/breeds/greatdane.html Then the Great Pyrenees who tops the Great Dane in it's aggresiveness and height. It bites without question, the others are mainly watchdogs, but you can gaurentee the pyrenees will bite if it feels in danger or senses danger to it's family. No, Chihuahua are the tallest and haviest of all dog, it can weight up to 500-700 pounds and may be 8 foot tall.

I think over all great danes top the cake on average. The mastiff may hold the record for being the heaviest, and the wolfhound may hold the record for being the tallest. But on average the great dane can be both of these...something that most of the other two breeds cannot do. Most large danes are 37" and weigh 180lb. Mastiff's may weigh 180+ but aren't 37" tall. Wolfhounds may be 48" tall but aren't 180lb.!!!!!!!!!!MY PICK IS THE GREAT DANE!!!!!!!!!!

The irish wolf hound has record for tallest but the Mastiffs run neck and neck with them. The Great Dane (German Mastiff}holds the record for weight and was only beat out by the irish wolf hound by 1 inch.All Mastiffs, including the great dane are very gentle and great with children. Very good family pets

Zorba an english mastiff, from the U.K.is listed in the Guiness record book at 347lbs he just died in the last few years,he was over 10 years old.... end of the story..... RIPLEYS BELIEVE IT OR NOT....

Woring with animals, i get this question almost on a daily basis. There is no doubt that the overall largest dog breed in the world is the Mastiff. Although there are many branches related to the mastiff (ie bullmastiff, great pyreneese, st. bernard, etc.), the English Mastiff holds many records worldwide. From information I've re\ceived, the mastiff is known to hit 300 pounds plus, with the largest being over 400 pounds (recorded).

The largest dog in the world according to the guiness world book of record was an english mastiff named "Hercules" who weighed 286 pounds - not 480 pounds....

I think that the great danes are very big, they are about 31' and the mastiff is about 30' now im talking tall wise. The newfoundland is also very big but only about 28'. now the stbernard is also large but only about 27' tall. Now weight is another story.

Different books/records have different "heaviest dogs" due to the current (ie) living record as apposed to the all time record. Zorba - heaviest and longest dog ever recognised by Guinness. His stated weights vary as his weight varied across his life, entered the record books at something like 314lbs, but records of him topping 340 exist. The heavist living dog record title gets swapped every year or so big dogs only make 8-12 years, and theres always someone new fattening up thier pooch. English Mastiff, St Bernard, Neapoliton Mastiff and probably French, Russian and Turkish mastiff types dogs have all recorded the odd animal that grows over 280lbs.

From what I've seen, read & heard I beleive Mastiffs are the largest breed, especially English Mastiffs. I think Great Danes are close. Will be interesting to see how my new puppy turns out. She is a Great Mastiff (Great Dane w/ English Mastiff) :O)

Not that I want to join this insane rambling of contradicting opinions but, The heaviest recorded dog in history was a Neo Mastiff not english. Huge difference. On the website dogsinthenews.com they mistake it for an english, and they admit it on the bottom. so eat that mo fo's and the chihuahua/weiner mobile comments made me laugh, thanks

Great danes are by far on average the biggest dogs in the world. I own a male dane and he is 89 cm tall. St. bernard are close behind and much heavier. If you are thinking of getting a bernard seriously consider a dane and visa versa. Cheers

the great dane can be the tallest, or the Irish wolfhound, the bull mastiff can be the heaviest, but the Newfoundland dog is the strongest!!! In 1979 it set a world record for pulling a sleigh weighing an impressive 3000kg 30 meters in 90 seconds.. myself being a Newfoundlander myself, take great pride in the fortitude , and life-saving abilities of this dog... they are also the most friendly of any breed.. never-ill tempered, never would hurt anyone.

Why are people lying so much here? An english mastiff from somewhere in the states is now holding the largest dog record with a 38inch neck and yes as someone said earlier I think its weighing in at 282lbs. Enough said. Secondly, the Irish wolfhound is usually an inch or 2 taller than the Great Dane

I would really like to know where I can get a very large dog.^.^ I am recently looking for a mastiff, but any large breed with a box face sounds nice. I only like dogs you can hug without hurting, so I really don't like small dogs. If anyone knows where I can find one, please tell me.

I think the Great Dane is the largest dog breed cause it's my favorite! I liked them since I was 6. They're so cool!
