I just purchased Mr. Mac and his tongue.  I was worried and was about to return the dog to the breeder until I read your answers above.  Thank you to whom ever created this site.  This confirmation put my fears at ease.

I am a dog groomer and lately i have noticed that the majority of Goldens have the black spots on their tongues.  This is weird ehh?  Any one know why...?

My boy has been growing spots monthly, on his tongue, since he was 2 months old.  The latest one is right at the tip and everyone sees it when we are at the doggy park.  First question is usually "Is your dog a purebred?" and then they start to tell me that only chow chows have that trait. Anyway, I have been doing some web research, as well as questioning other dog owners (who's dog has spots on its tongue) and from what I can tell, it would be fare to say that it's just a birthmark type thing, it won't harm them in any way, my purebred golden does not have a bit of chow chow in him and no I did not give my dog a black felt pen to chew on!!

It is my understanding from conversations I have had with Golden people that the black spot is a throw back to the original lines and is a sign of aristocraty

Many Goldens have a black spot(s)on their tongues. Our goldens' breeder has 2 CH dogs with black spots.
