we have two cocker spaniels a male and female that were raised together. We have two problems.
1)  The male tries to mate but does not get an erection.
2)  The female does not seem interested even when she is in heat.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to what we need to do.  Maybe seperate the dogs or get another male or female?

These dogs were not meant to be bred. If they are sucessfully bred then the female will probably have a hard time caring for the pups and may not even pay attention to them at all. This often happens in show dogs and it is genetic to have breeding problems. It sounds like you don't care about the dogs, like you just care about having puppies. If you are doing it for money than you will probably not earn a single cent if you are a responsible breeder. Responsible breeders breed for the betterment of the breed. Your dogs may be great dogs but most dogs are not of breeding quality. Contact a vet and ask if the dogs are up to par and if they are acceptible breeding dogs. Just because they are purebred doesn't mean that you can breed them. Do the right thing, ask the vet about spaying and neutering because if both the male and female are having problems mating then that may mean that there will be complications a long the way if bred. It may cost you thousands of dollars and could potientally KILL the mother dog or the puppies. If you want to raise puppies from birth with low charge, then contact a local animal shelter. There are always pregnant dogs there that need to be fostered because the mother and puppies may die in the shelter because the shelter staff can not watch them as well as they could. The puppies born in shelters can also contract diseases that can kill them and others that can make them very sick. They need the help. Before being selfish by putting your dogs in danger and possibly their puppies in danger, you might want to save lives that need the help because breeding your dogs gives the homeless almost no hope to survive. SPAY AND NEUTER THEM ASAP!

To mishon: just because these people didn't know the answer to this question doesn't mean they don't love their dogs. They cared enough about them to ask this question. I know from experience that saying something like that about someones care of their dogs hurts alot.

These dogs should not be bred. I would have them both neutered. If you are truly interested in showing/breeding dogs, contact the American Spaniel Club or the AKC and find a mentor to help you get started. No dog should be bred without first being checked for at least eye and hip defects. Also, think about the reason you want to breed. Breeding dogs WILL NOT make you money. You get extremely lucky if you break even. To breed, you should want to better the breed.

You may want to introduce them to different dogs and see the response.  If they respond well then your two dogs may need some assistance while mating for the male to get his erection.  Check with the local Vet.  There is no harm breeding and is definitely not a selfish desire.

As harsh as he was, he is exactly correct.  Judging by the question asked.  The fact of the matter is that Cocker Spaniels draw a lot of $$, and they are also one of the most overbread breeds due to owners that are after that $$$.
