X11R5/R6 supports a DES-based form of authorization. There are several implementations of the file Wraphelp.c, which may be missing from your distribution; one is on ftp.psy.uq.oz.au:/pub/X11R5. The R6 release notes point to /pub/R6/xdm-auth/README from ftp.x.org for more information.
