Many thanks to David Shelley for listings to some really interesting
places in Indonesia.

Kuta (Bali)

Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:

Mades Warung, Bemo Corner
- Indonesian, Dutch, and European. Set in a noisy street filled with
dubious looking characters, this at first glance does not look like
the sort of place to find anything of value food or oterwise -- but
be brave and investigate. Mades is THE place for the early grazing
of the Hip glitterati of Bali. It is filled most nights with
assorted Europeans and a strong contingent of Brazilians so you can
be assured of great music to accompany a most marvellous kitchen.
Although heavy on the seafood there are numerous veg options (try
the seaweed salad) and great juices, the strawberry lassi is nice
for lacto-vegetarians. If you're still hungry and want to continue
to watch the "floorshow" of humanity, decamp to Goa 2001 on Legian
Road in Legian for lata, late night sushi (some veg options), and
again great music to watch the show by. Open daily 8am-midnight.

Aromas Cafe, Legian Road, (0361) 51003
- International health foods cuisine & bakery.

Legian (Bali)

Vegetarian Restaurants:

Aroma's, Jalan Legian
- Lacto-vegetarian. Vegan-friendly. This restaurant could have the
"mother of all veg menus", it is endless! If you can't find
something to eat here, you aren't hungry! It covers just about every
main cuisine, all done veg (lacto or vegan). Great coffee - in a
land of poor coffee (if you like espresso) and lots and lots of
freshly baked cakes and desserts, all egg free. If you are a serious
foodie, Bali is going to make you very happy indeed. Open daily

Sanur (Bali)

Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:

Batur Jimbar Cafe, on the main drag
- Indonesian/French. Vegan-friendly. Buckle your seat belts -- this is
a real treat. Organic produce is used to give the most interesting
of menus a further lift into the veg gourmet stratosphere. Two
menus, one blackboard, one fixed with sample dishes such as coconut
and veg curry done Bali style, yummy asparagus pasta in a rich but
light creamy sauce. All served with fresh home-baked bread and
sensational organic juices (papaya, tangerine, and pineapple being a
particular favourite). Also has nice bookshop attached and
interesting pottery store which supplies a few of the local five
star hotels with dining ware. All in all a precious find. Open
  Mon-Sat 8am-10pm. Closed Sun.

Vegetarian Restaurants:

Depot Vegetarian, JL Ngaglik No31, Tel. 62-31-362501
- Lacto-vegetarian. Vegan-friendly. International food, including
Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, French, etc. Tofu specialties.
Run by a religious organization. Also known as The International
Supreme Master Ching Hai Meditation Associations Vegetarian House.

Ubud (Bali)

Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants:

Lotus Cafe, on Main Street
- Vegan-friendly. Imagine a 500 year old lotus pond set by a 1000 year
old temple and you have the setting for the Lotus cafe. This cafe is
almost a legend in Bali, and whilst the service might have dropped
off a little in recent years, it's still a must visit for first
timers to this wonderful island. The menu is a melange of food
styles with plenty of local and Indonesian dishes plus Italian,
Chinese, and lots for the travelling veggie. Go for lunch and if you
are still around in the afternoon slip down to Monkey Forest Road
and have an almost transcendental experience at Cafe Wayan's dessert
  counter! Open 8am-10pm daily.

Cafe Wayan's, on Monkey Forest Road
- According to the description in the Lotus Cafe entry, you can get an
almost transcendental experience at the dessert counter.

Many thanks to Sim Ung for supplying most of the Malaysian listings.

In Malaysia, most of the vegetarian restaurants try to simulate
non-vegetarian dishes. This is because the people running the
restaurants try to encourage the meat-eaters to be vegetarian and to
show them that there are alternatives that can taste as good as the
meat dishes. Tasty food is a number one issue with a lot of Malaysians
who will travel any distance to sample any special dishes. Most are
very attached to eating meat, so do not be too surprised to see dishes
named sweet and sour fish, curry lamb, etc. which look very much like
the real thing! Just enjoy the rich and delicious food and remember
that the restauranteurs are trying their best to show the others an
alternative to killing for food and that this is only one method to
reach out to others who may not understand the reasons for
