Kuta (Bali) ---- Vegetarian-Friendly Restaurants: Mades Warung, Bemo Corner - Indonesian, Dutch, and European. Set in a noisy street filled with dubious looking characters, this at first glance does not look like the sort of place to find anything of value food or oterwise -- but be brave and investigate. It is filled most nights with assorted Europeans and a strong contingent of Brazilians so you can be assured of great music to accompany a most marvellous kitchen. Although heavy on the seafood there are numerous veg options (try the seaweed salad) and great juices, the strawberry lassi is nice for lacto-vegetarians. If you're still hungry and want to continue to watch the "floorshow" of humanity, decamp to Goa 2001 on Legian Road in Legian for lata, late night sushi (some veg options), and again great music to watch the show by. In Malaysia, most of the vegetarian restaurants try to simulate non-vegetarian dishes. This is because the people running the restaurants try to encourage the meat-eaters to be vegetarian and to show them that there are alternatives that can taste as good as the meat dishes. Tasty food is a number one issue with a lot of Malaysians who will travel any distance to sample any special dishes. Most are very attached to eating meat, so do not be too surprised to see dishes named sweet and sour fish, curry lamb, etc. which look very much like the real thing! Just enjoy the rich and delicious food and remember that the restauranteurs are trying their best to show the others an alternative to killing for food and that this is only one method to reach out to others who may not understand the reasons for non-killing.
