The following sections are covered in Part 2 (of 4): Part II: Other soap resources on the internet 12. Soap mailing lists 13. WWW (World Wide Web) pages pertaining to soaps 14. Is there an ftp archive for rec.arts.tv.soaps.* from which I can retrieve past posts? Part II: Other soap resources on the internet Subject: 12. Soap mailing lists Is there a mailing list for my soap? Some kind folks in r.a.t.s.* keep mailing lists for people with flakey or non-existent newsfeeds. Many of these mailing lists do *not* have anything in them which is not *also* on r.a.t.s.*, so if you have no trouble getting r.a.t.s.* posts, _please_ don't overburden the volunteer mailing-list keepers. Also be aware that some of these mailing lists are very high-volume, so if you have little disk space, they could easily overwhelm you. Many of the lists are _not_ run automatically, (ie "subscribe DOOL" might not mean anything to the DOOL-spoiler list-maintainer), so be careful how you request to be put on a list. Here are the mailing lists I know about, what they include, and who to contact to get on the lists: for AMC: AMC updates posted in r.a.t.s.abc; Mary Allison Wu <mary@mcs.com>; Send mail to Mary stating to send updates to Your Name <your email address within arrow-brackets>. for AMC: r.a.t.s.abc posts about AMC; Liz Bauer <harkon@inxpress.net> for AMC: non-r.a.t.s.abc discussion about AMC; Contact Jen Boscacci <ofiana@earthlink.net> for AMC: non-r.a.t.s.abc newsletter about AMC; Contact AdamLiza@juno.com for AMC: non-r.a.t.s.a, for Tad/Liza fans; send email to mbergen@i1.net (Margaret Bergen) with the words Subscribe T&L in your subject line. for AW: r.a.t.s.misc posts about AW; Lisa Klobucar <klobuca1@pilot.msu.edu> for ATWT: non-r.a.t.s.c ATWT weekly newsletter go to: http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/atwtnews for B&B: non-r.a.t.s.misc discussion about B&B; Stubborn Wench <kss1@cornell.edu>. send e-mail to listproc@cornell.edu with nothing in the subject line, and the first line of text should be: subscribe bold-l your-mailaddress for B&B and Y&R: non-r.a.t.s.* discussion; Kamal Larsuel <kamal@seattle.edu> Contact: majordomo@nwlink.com (to subscribe, email's subject should be blank, and the body of the message should be "subscribe dblink-list your-email-address" (no quotes). for BH: non-r.a.t.s.* discussion about "Beverly Hills, 90210"; To subscribe, email majordomo@tcp.com with the message "subscribe 90210" or "subscribe 90210-digest" (no quotes) for BH: non-r.a.t.s.m. newsletter about Beverly Hills 90210 Contact: Xfox1121@aol.com for CITY: non-r.a.t.s.a. discussion about The City; Cari D. One which I think looks valuable (and gives references to other WWW FAQs as well) can be gotten by sending email to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with "send /pub/usenet/news.answers/www/guide" (no quotes!) in the body of the message. Thanks to Jeff Jungblut (jeff@port-charles.com) and May a.k.a. Ms. Purple (may@cup.hp.com). Subject: 14. Is there an ftp archive for rec.arts.tv.soaps.* from which I can retrieve past posts? Most news sites expire articles after a week or two, and some even more quickly. The only two posts which I *know* are archived via ftp are the soaps-faq and the soaps-abbrevs, as mentioned in the soaps-faq. However, there's now (1995) a www site http://dejanews.com, which is an archive for all Usenet posts except for those posted to alt.*, talk.*, soc.*, and *.binary groups. The posts are archived for at least one year. Users have the option of creating a query filter (which will allow one to search by newsgroup name), or simply by keyword (ex: if you'd lost a post of your own, you might set the search to look for your real or email name; however, if you use more than one word in a search, the default operator is "OR" - to search for "joe jones", you'd want to search for "joe & jones".). There's another www site http://www.altavista.digital.com/, which is similar to Deja News. Using the Alta Vista engine, you can search either usenet or the WWW, and it has a finer screen for subjects than Deja News. (It doesn't look at the alt. or talk. usenet newsgroups either.) Try using Advanced Query, and do read the Help sections. Also, since January 1992, the entire Usenet newsfeed has been made available on CD-ROM, so you may be able to find what you want that way. You can get more information on "NetNews on CD's" from CD Publishing Corporation, 4824 Fraser Street, Vancouver, BC, Canada V5V 4H4, phone numbers: 604-874-1430, 800-333-7565 (USA), 604-874-1431 (FAX), or email: info@CDPublishing.com <note - when trying to email this address in 1998, it was defunct>. In the near future, their product information will also be available via Gopher at gopher.CDPublishing.com(TCP/70). I contacted them in October of 1993, and they said that for those who would like just a rec.arts.tv.soaps archive CD, they could make custom one-off for them. DISCLAIMER: I have no association with CD Publishing Corporation, and don't even have a CD-ROM player. ==== compilation copyright 1994-1999, Margaret D. Gibbs.
