Impressario is a visual printing and scanning environment. Drivers for
many popular printers and scanners are provided. The current WWW pages for
  Impressario are at:

The web pages are extremely out of date...

  PRINTING

Impressario's printer drivers allow the user to control resolution, paper
size, double-sided printing, text orientation, etc. Impressario allows you
to print many types of files (text and graphics). See the question "What
types of image files can Impressario print?" for details.

Non-PostScript printer drivers utilize an Adobe(r) PostScript(tm) Raster
Image Processor (RIP) to print image and PostScript files. For Impressario
2.0 and higher, this RIP is an extra-cost item.

Impressario gives you full printer status in a network-transparent manner, so
you can find out locally or from a remote system when the printer is out of
toner, out of paper, has a jam, isn't turned on, etc.

  SCANNING

Impressario also supports scanners. The Graphical Scan tool allows you to
scan data from a scanner, file, local or remote workstation display and send
the data to a printer, file, or workstation display. The Scanner
installation tool provides a simple interface for installing and configuring
  scanners on your workstation.

  DEVELOPER'S KIT

The Impressario Developer's Kit allows application and device plug-in
developers to create software that fully supports printing and scanning in a
manner that is consistent with the Impressario architecture. This software
is included standard with Impressario 2.0 and higher.

  FONTS

The Impressario fonts subsystem contains 22 Type 1 PostScript fonts, which
complement the base 13 fonts provided with Display PostScript. These
additional fonts provide you with a complete set of industry standard fonts
used in most PostScript printers. In addition, these fonts can be used with
the Display PostScript system to create true WYSIWYG applications.

  IMPRESSARIO 2.X

Impressario 2.0 and higher is included standard with every SGI workstation
and server. In addition to supporting more PostScript printers, the 2.x
releases provide a Kodak Color Management System interface that allows you to
calibrate images you scan and print.

Note that the PostScript RIP provided with Impressario 2.x is an extra-cost
item not covered by the standard IRIX software license. The PostScript RIP
software is required for printing to non-PostScript printers.
