III. Frequently Asked Questions About Harrison Ford

1. What colour are Harrison Ford's eyes?
They are that magical kind of hazel that changes colour according to what
colour clothing he is wearing. So they can appear to be blue, green, or
brown.

2. How tall is Harrison Ford?
After much speculation, consensus is that he is most likely 6'1" tall. :-)

3. What is Harrison Ford's middle name?
He doesn't have one. During his early screen appearances, he was billed
as 'Harrison J. Ford', but only to distinguish him from another actor named
Harrison Ford, who was popular during the silent film era.
Once the modern Harrison Ford could prove to the Screen Actor's Guild
that the silent film star had died, he was allowed to drop the middle
initial.
(Side note: Harrison was named for his maternal grandfather, Harrison
Needleman, who performed in vaudeville.)

4. How did he get that scar on his chin?
Harrison tried to put on his seatbelt while driving to work, in Laguna
Canyon, (Orange County, California) and drove into a lamp post. He stood
by the side of the road, bleeding, for several hours before a passing car
picked him up. A resident at a local hospital stitched him up. Harrison
has joked that the doctor must have used paper clips.

5. What is Harrison Ford's shoe size?
We think it is size 12. A husband of a newsgroup member found that his
feet fit into Harrison Ford's footprints at the Graumann Chinese
Theatre's Walk of Fame (see #7), and his feet are a size 12. It's not
the most scientific method, but we will take what we can get!

6. Why doesn't Harrison Ford wear a wedding ring?
It has been noticed that he never wears one in real life. We don't really
know why, but our favourite guesses are that as a former carpenter, he
probably didn't wear one, as most men who work with machinery don't. Or
he just doesn't like to wear one - not every husband chooses to wear one.

7. Has Harrison Ford been honoured on the Graumann Chinese Theatre's Walk
   of Fame?
Yes. He signed his name in cement, and added his hand and footprints to
his own square, following the release of Patriot Games. There is also a
star honouring the silent film star Harrison Ford (see #3).

8. Was Harrison Ford in E.T.?
Harrison Ford filmed a cameo appearance as Elliot's principal, and his
wife, Melissa Mathison (E.T. screenwriter) had a part as the school
nurse.
Their scenes were not included in the 1982 release, but are supposed to
have been restored in the laser disc version re-release of the movie. You
can see outtakes from the film while waiting in line for the E.T. ride at
Universal Studios in Los Angeles, and hear Harrison as the principal.

9. Did Harrison Ford appear on "Leave It to Beaver?"
No. I don't know where this idea came from, but some sources falsely
claim that Harrison appeared in a 1957 episode as Chester Anderson. David
Letterman went so far as to show a clip of the show to Harrison during
one of his appearances on Letterman's show. The boy doesn't look anything
like Harrison, who was 15 years old in 1957, long before he ever acted.
Harrison seemed amused by the idea, but denied that he ever appeared on
that TV show.

10. What are some fun facts about Harrison Ford?
* Frustrated by the direction his career was heading in the late '60's,
Harrison became a carpenter and turned down any role he hated.
* In 1993, a new species of spider, Calponia harrisonford, was named by
the American Museum of Natural History.
* The role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark was originally
offered to Tom Selleck. He couldn't be released from his "Magnum P.I."
TV series to make the film, however. Frustrated by his inability to
cast the part of Indiana Jones, Steven Spielberg went to see The Empire
Strikes Back and realized that the perfect actor had been in front of
George Lucas and he all the time.
* When he appeared on 'The Oprah Winfrey' show in the summer of 1997, she
asked him what some of his favourite things were:
Favourite technical gadget: an airplane (Harrison has a pilot's licence)
    Favourite accessory: his earring
Favourite cereal: Raisin Bran ("and it's good for you")
Favourite time of day: "early, about 6am"
    Favourite historical figure: Abraham Lincoln
Favourite dream: Harrison described a flying dream
Favourite memory: the birth of his first child (he noted that the
births of his other children were not less significant)
Favourite thing to sleep in: "A bed will do"

11. What awards/nominations has he received?
* Greatest Screen Legend (Male), USA Today poll, 1999.
* Blockbuster Entertainment Award (Favorite Actor, Comedy-Romance) Six
  Days, Seven Nights, 1999.
* People's Choice Award for All Time Favourite Motion Picture Actor,
  1999.
* People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive, 1998.
* People's Choice Award for Favourite Motion Picture Actor, 1998.

  Australian award)
* SF Film Saturn Award for Lifetime Achievement, 1996.
* Harvard's Hasty Pudding Theatrical's 1996 Man of the Year.
* Golden Globe nomination (actor) Sabrina, 1995.
* NATO/Sho West Box Office Star of the Century, 1994 - first and only
time this award has been given.
* MTV Movie Award (Best Screen Duo) The Fugitive, 1994 - with Tommy Lee
  Jones.
* The Spencer Tracy Award/UCLA, 1994.
* Golden Globe Nomination (actor) The Fugitive, 1993.
* Golden Globe Nomination (actor) The Mosquito Coast, 1986.
* Golden Globe Nomination (actor) Witness, 1985.
* Academy Award Nomination (actor) Witness, 1985.
* SF Film Saturn Award (actor) Raiders of the Lost Ark, 1982.

12. What are some notable Harrison Ford quotes?
"Acting is basically like carpentry--if you know your craft, you figure
out the logic of a particular job and submit yourself to it. It all comes
down to detail."
--From Earl Blackwell's "Entertainment Celebrity Register", 1991.

Oprah Winfrey: Do you accept films that don't have a lot of action in
them? I mean, when they come, do you look for as much action as you can find?
Harrison Ford: Did you ever see me beat Sabrina?
--TV interview, 1997.

"If you become a part of that machinery, someone the machinery thinks it
can use and exploit at that particular moment, then there is sure to be a
time limit on you, and you are soon going to be unfashionable. Because I
have never been fashionable, I can never be unfashionable."
--From Vanity Fair, July 1993.

Barbara Walters: Do you believe in the Force?
Harrison Ford: When it was fashionable to say, "May the Force be with
you", I always said, "Force yourself"..."The Force is within you, force
yourself"
--TV interview, 1997.

"We have a good marriage. We enjoy our life together. But I don't have a
recipe for other people to use in their own kitchen."
--About his marriage to Melissa, People Magazine, August 4, 1997.

"I'm an assistant storyteller. It's like being a waiter or a gas-station
attendant, but I'm waiting on six million people a week, if I'm lucky."
--On being an actor.

"I just want to make movies, then go away."

There is allegedly a biography written in French by Jean Jacques
Jolot-Blanc, published in 1987 by Editions Caranoc.

15. Is there going to be a fourth Indiana Jones or a third Jack Ryan movie?
Harrison Ford and Steven Spielberg both appear committed to doing a
fourth Indiana Jones film. However, nothing truly official has been
announced, and they are both committed to filming other movies in the
next few years. Additionally, it appears that George Lucas doesn't want
to another one until he finishes the current Star Wars trilogy - which
will be the year 2005.
There has been an official announcement concerning the next Jack Ryan
film - it will be the The Sum of All Fears.

16. Does Harrison Ford smoke?
As recently as September, 1998, he's been spotted smoking a cigar and a
cigarette (on different occasions).

17. Did I hear Harrison Ford's name in a song?
Could be! He's been mentioned in three songs:

Christine Lavin wrote a whole song about a chance encounter with Harrison
Ford. It can be previewed on her website, http://www.christinelavin.com.
It can be found on her Stealth Project CD.

The Barenaked Ladies, a Canadian band, included this line in their song
One Week: "Like Harrison Ford I'm getting Frantic"

Adam Sandler also immortalized Harrison Ford in The Chanukah Song:
"We got Ann Landers and her sister Dear Abby
Harrison Ford's a quarter Jewish - not too shabby!"*

* It can be argued that he is really half-Jewish because of his mother,
or fully Jewish under Jewish law.

18. What happened to 'The Age of Aquarius'?
The Age of Aquarius was supposed to be a film set in war ravaged Bosnia,
with Harrison playing an American journalist and Kristin Scott Thomas as
his Bosnian love interest. The project fell apart, and the reasons seem
to been budget-related. This was a film that many of us were anticipating.

19. When was Ben Ford on the "Rosie O'Donnell" show?
When Harrison was on Rosie's show in the summer of 1998, she mentioned
that his son Ben, a chef, would be appearing on her show to do a cooking
segment. For whatever reason, Ben has never been seen on her show.
Newsgroup members have e-mailed the show to find the answer to this
question, but have received no reply.

20. When was Ben Ford in _People_ magazine?
Ben Ford was profiled in the April 20, 1998 issue. (Tammy Wynette is on
the cover).

IV. Frequently Asked Questions About alt.fan.harrison-ford

1. What Harrison Ford-related web sites are there?
There are too many to list: I've chosen some of my favourites, as well as
the starting point for the Harrison Ford Web Ring, which contains many
more excellent sites.

the sites in the Harrison Ford Webring.

2. Does Harrison Ford read this newsgroup?
As far as we know, no. It's assumed, however, that people associated with
him professionally may be monitoring the newsgroup for feedback purposes
(i.e., what kinds of movies do his his fans like to see him in). This is
a public forum, after all, and anyone could be reading it. If Harrison
does read it, I hope he gets a chuckle or two. :-)

3. If I post a personal message to alt.fan.harrison-ford, will Harrison
Ford reply?
See #2. Any messages posted to the alt.fan.harrison-ford newsgroup are
not guaranteed to be read by him. And as far as I know, nobody forwards
messages to him. But I could very well be wrong!

4. Does anybody have Harrison Ford's e-mail address? Can I have it?
If Harrison Ford is online, he hasn't told us about it. Occasionally,
someone will claim to have his e-mail address, but nothing has been
proven. In the interest of his privacy, some of us wouldn't give out such
information anyways.

5. Can someone tell me where he lives? I want to write to him!
In the interest of Mr. Ford's safety and privacy, most of us will not
publish any address for him. We will name cities or towns where he is
known to have residences, but that's as specific as most of us get. Many
of us do not want any crazed fans camping out on his doorstep.
However, to send fan mail, you can mail his agent, Patricia McQueeney, at:
10279 Century Woods Dr.
Los Angeles, CA 90067

Patricia is known among fans for replying with some wonderful photos of
Harrison Ford. I have personally written to her and asked for permission
to publish this address on the Internet for fan mail, and she has given
her permission.

The question of whether or not to publish a home/street address remains
hot in the newsgroup. Some people will give out an address. Others,
recalling how John Lennon and other celebrities have been
attacked/murdered, and the recent case of the Spielberg stalker, strongly
advocate not giving a home/street address because they know that nobody
can account for the mental stability of every person reading this
newsgroup. For others, it is an issue of privacy.

Please do not e-mail me and ask for Harrison Ford's address (mailing,
home or e-mail). If I'm in a good mood, I will refer you back to this
FAQ. If I'm not in a good mood, I will ignore you. I do this because I am
committed to protecting his privacy.

6. Is there a Harrison Ford fan club I could join?
I don't know of any fan clubs, but there are apparently two fanzines full
of magazine articles and fan fiction. You can write to the following
addresses to request information:

Better Idea Zine (quarterly, $15 US a year to subscribe)
31 Lincoln Avenue
Lansdale, PA 19446
USA
* Note: this information has not been verified.

and

Flip of a Coin (supposed to be out of print, but back issues are available)
Paula Truelove
118 Arden Road
Tallahassee, FL 32310-7051
* New address and confirmation of availability of back issues verified
April, 1998 by a newsgroup member.

7. I want Harrison Ford to sign my original 'Star Wars' poster. How do I
get him to do that?
You could try and meet him in person (when he makes a personal appearance
- don't camp out on his front yard!). Many newsgroup members have waited
outside TV studios and movie theatres, when he does TV interviews or has
a premiere. He has been quite gracious, and (if he has the time) will
sign things for fans in person, as long as you respect his personal
space! Do not 'rush' him because he will rush away!
However, he does not honour such requests by mail. If this policy bothers
you, consider how much of his movie-making time would be eaten up by
answering every fan letter and signing every item sent to him, and you'll
realize why he doesn't. :-)

8. What can I get out of alt.fan.harrison-ford?
The chance to talk with many of his fans from across the globe. We use
the newsgroup to keep each other informed of his upcoming TV appearances,
to help each other find copies of magazines containing terrific articles
and pictures of Harrison Ford. We talk about his movies, and the man
himself, and share our favourite scenes and opinions of all of his movies.
Note: not everyone likes all of his movies, although everyone certainly
likes most of them. There are plenty of threads debating the merits of
each film, and lots of polite and respectful disagreement. This really is
the friendliest newsgroup on the Net, and we all strive to get along,
even when someone hates our favourite movies.
Blatant flaming of Harrison Ford, his movies, and/or people in the
newsgroup is not tolerated, however. We do get the occasional troll
(someone who posts nasty and/or false stuff to provoke angry responses).
The best thing to do is ignore them, so they will go away.
A 1998 survey showed that 90.2% of the participants are female, the
average age is 32, and the ages range from 14 to 73 years old. So anyone
is welcome! :-)

9. I'm new to the Internet. What tips can you give me so I won't get flamed?
Obviously, don't flame Harrison Ford! :-)
A new users guide has been written for this newsgroup to help out
newcomers. It will be posted every other week. If you want a copy right
now, e-mail me at neptunia@geocities.com.

10. Are there any other newsgroups related to Harrison Ford?
Yes - alt.movies.indiana-jones, alt.fan.blade-runner,
alt.movies.spielberg, alt.fan.starwars and several newsgroups under the
rec.arts.sf.starwars hierarchy. If your ISP doesn't carry any of these,
an e-mail request to your postmaster should facilitate that.

11. What's with the talk of teddy bears and OCHFD and lawn mowing movies?
Any talk of a teddy bear usually refers to the famous scene in Frantic,
in which a nude Harrison holds a teddy bear in front of his privates
while pretending to be Michelle's lover. The teddy bear is a source of
much fan frustration, and a new movement has sprung up (pardon the pun)
in the newsgroup: SOTBIHFM means "Stamp Out Teddy Bears In Harrison Ford
Movies".
OCHFD stands for "Obsessive Compulsive Harrison Ford Disorder". People
with OCHFD can't stop talking/writing/dreaming about Harrison Ford. There
doesn't appear to be a cure - at least, nobody has tried to find one!
AOCHFD is an Acute form of OCHFD, and usually develops after exposure to
alt.fan.harrison-ford. ;-)
The lawn mowing movie came out of a thread in which someone stated that
they would pay to watch a movie in which Harrison Ford did nothing but
mow the lawn. Variations include him mowing the lawn shirtless, reading
the phone book, and reading the phone book shirtless.

12. Is there a mailing list related to Harrison Ford?
Yes. It was set up and is maintained by Gregory Seifert. You can
subscribe by pointing your web browser to
http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/harryford.

13. Can I post binaries to the newsgroup?
Technically, yes, but it causes problems. The newsgroup is not configured
to allow binaries (i.e. picture files in .gif or .jpeg format), and
posted binaries often cause many posts to go missing.
There are other ways to share your binaries with other fans. You can:
* Put your binaries on your web page so that they can be downloaded. If
you don't have a web page, other fans will be willing to post them for
you. Just ask!
* E-mail the binaries to anyone who wants them. If you post a message
offering to do so, be prepared for many replies!
* Post the binaries in alt.binaries.starwars, which is configured for
binaries. Your pictures will be considered on-topic. Please post a
message in alt.fan.harrison-ford telling us that you've put up new
pictures of Harrison!

14. What do you do to celebrate Harrison Ford's birthday?
July 13 is a very special day for us! Many of us try to honour Harrison's
birthday by doing something for our communities or by supporting some of
his favourite charities.
Some past ideas have been:

Donating money to one of his favourite charities:
  Earthshare 1-800-875-3863
  Conservation International
  Save the Children Foundation
  American Cancer Society
  Will Rogers Foundation
  Archaeological Advisory Group
  Lancaster Farmland Trust
Signing up for a bone marrow registry.

15. What celebrities have OCHFD?
Many female celebrities have confessed their undying devotion to, and
obsession of, Harrison Ford. Some of our sisters are Cameron Diaz, Lynn
Redgrave, Star Jones of 'The View', and the folk music star Christine
Lavin. (See Part III)

Disclaimer: this document has been compiled by a fan of Harrison Ford,
for the enjoyment of his fans, and to help fans settle into
alt.fan.harrison-ford with some ease. Harrison Ford has had nothing to do
with this document, except inspiring lots of us to talk together on the
Internet and ask questions, frequently. I've tried to verify many of the
facts contained within, but don't assume that the information contained
in this FAQ is 100% accurate. Some days I can barely spell my own name right.
Patricia McQueeney gave written consent to publish her business address
in this document, on the Internet. That is the only form of consent given
by any associates of Harrison Ford. Any other kind of consent or approval
should not be assumed.
