I recommend gently directing these folks to the newsgroup.

I also get basic questions about using Usenet (especially when
mentioned a newsgroup on a post to a mailing list). I think I'm
going to have to write a canned response to these questions.

Those should go to the bit bucket, unless you're getting repeated
messages from the same idiot.
