This note concerns Mac AOL. I am blissfully naive concerning Windows.
Version 2.x of the AOL client on the Mac was limited to 32 KB in a text=
window. I recall that messages longer than that were broken up into chunks=
of about 32,000 bytes each, and it was up to the poor sap using the=
software to cut and paste the message back together.
I just sent a 583150 byte message to my moribund AOL account. Opening it in=
version 3.0B elicits this message:=20
[Only the first 2K of this message is displayed, as it is too long to view
through AOL. The entire message has been turned into a text attachment,
which you can retrieve by selecting Download. Once downloaded, open it wi=
th
a word processor or text editor for reading.]
I concur with Martin that the FAQ maintainers shouldn't have to deal with=
such limitations. People using archaic client software to read FAQs should=
either learn to reassemble posts broken up their own software, or they=
should "version-up" (to use the Japanese verb).
