Hello,

This is not directly an FAQ question. However, I would appreciate the
advice of people who may have dealt with similar issues, or have some ideas
on how to solve the problem...

As a supplement to my FAQ for soc.culture.bulgaria, I maintain a large Web
site on Bulgaria. A part of it is an archive of the newsgroup. That means
that I have collected almost 100% of the postings to soc.culture.bulgaria
in the last 4 years or so. The site is visited by hundreds of visitors a
day, and was recently awarded one of the "Top 5% of the web" award, for
whatever it's worth.

The problem is the following:

After a series of political discussions on the newsgroup, a certain person
used to post many offensive messages at a volume of 10 or more per day.

After trying many reasonable approaches to confront him, some of the
offended people have decided to use the archive to document his abuses.

The abuser in question has asked me to remove all his posts from the
archive. He says that he is subject to blackmail by people allegedly writing
to his employers. He also argues (correctly) that he never gave me
permission to archive his messages.

I don't see the purpose of my archive if 2000 or so postings should be
removed from it. So, I am faced by the alternative to ignore the request or
to shut down the archive entirely. There are certainly other alternatives,
and I am unsure about which one to select.

Also, I am vulnerable, as the archive is located on a university server
and that person could easily send a letter to my university in order to ask
them to force me to close my site.

There are many other considerations as well. If anyone is willing to give
me some advice, I will be happy to send them more detail.

Please keep this discussion within this list, as I would like to postpone
replying to the individual until I have found a reasonable solution.

Thanks

Drago
