I'm not sure if I count as "already recognized as a specialist." I'd
been active on the perl newsgroup for awhile, I answered a lot of
questions, I maintained the UF perl FTP/WWW archive. Other than that, no
I was never considered (or considered myself) to be an authority. I've
now gotten a book offer because of the FAQ.
