Yes, I thought about this issue a great deal when writing the FAQs
alt.support.asthma. I made a firm policy at that time only to
include information that I had heard from what I consider to be
reliable sources, such as medical textbooks, peer-reviewed journal
articles, medical professionals whose credentials I could verify,
and books for the layman written by medical professionals.
Consequently, I added this paragraph to the introduction of the
alt.support.asthma FAQ:
Comments, additions, and corrections are requested; if you do not
wish your name to be included in the contributors list, please state
that explicitly when contributing. I will accept additions upon my
own judgement -- I'll warn you right now that I'm a confirmed skeptic
and am not a great believer in alternative medicine.
The few people who have queried the lack of alternative medicine in
the FAQs I have told about my policy, and stated that it is for
both personal reasons and concerns about personal liablility. (My
disclaimer is fairly extensive also.) I've stated clearly that if
they consider it important enough, they are of course free to write
their own FAQ and post it. Oddly enough, I've never been flamed
for this reply, and no alternative medicine for asthma FAQs have
been written, to my knowledge. :)-
I would be interested in hearing other people's concerns about the
disclaimer necessary for medical FAQs, as this is another topic that
I think important.
