I maintain the Tattoo FAQ. After a number of professional tattooists
went online, I created the Purple Pages Directory FAQ, where I allow
listings of the tattooists who have 'net connections, as well as a
25-word "blurb" of their own choosing (subject to editing). This has
helped lower the ad-posting rate enormously, and apparently, some of
the entrants feel a sense of pride to be listed. We had a newbie
professional post a very blatant ad, and one of the directory listed
professionals posted a complaint right away (sort of a "we have to
play by the rules, so you do, too")--that was nice (kind of a
self-policing).
I also have a separate artist review FAQ, and the professionals have
*NO* say in what goes in there at all, other than the fact that they
can correct factual errors. The reviews are like restaurant or movie
reviews, and are fully accounted for by contributors who use their
real names (no anon-IDs)--and I won't let them include gossip or
hearsay in the reviews.
By keeping the two completely separate, we've been able to work out a
nice cozy system.
