Well, on the one hand, people who maintain FAQs, moderate newsgroups,
keep FTP, Gopher, WWW sites, have set themselves up in a public way, and
should be ready to deal with email. That's the way it goes. If you do
not like it, you should probably transfer your FAQ to somebody else. On
the other hand, you cannot be everybody's unpaid private consultant.
The answer is to point them to things that will teach them to help
themselves.

If it's obvious they haven't read the FAQ, send them the FAQ or tell them
where to get it. Send canned files to answer common questions not
appropriate for the FAQ. Point them to where they can find the answer if
it is not in the above places. And answer questions personally if it
seems like you are the best person to answer, or if it's not available
elsewhere.
