The /only/ way to discourage advertising is to make it /very/
clear in the charter, posting guidelines, FAQ, or whatever else is
regularly posted to the newsgroup that advertising is not wanted (or, if
it is wanted, what the limits are.)
If rec.running has no such document, your only recourse is a
counter-FAQ or meta-FAQ, describing either (a) just how false some of the
advertisers' claims are, or (b) just how many other, similar products
there are on the market.
