To be honest, I'm afraid it appears to me that the news.answers process
has pretty much broken down. Note that we're talking a 2.5 month delay
at this point, even for the simplest of changes. I've actually stopped
submitting my FAQ to news.answers because due to reorganizing it and
new groups being added to the hierarchy changes were happening faster
than version approvals would happen.
Offhand, I can think of two possibilities here to help fix things. First
is to reevaluate the process. I understand to become a "level one"
news.answers moderator takes time, but couldn't there be a number of
"level two" moderators who deal with limited, specific, tasks involving
revision to already approved FAQs, such as adding new groups or new
parts? This sort of thing could have a separate address told only to
FAQkeepers with approved FAQs, and a "level one" moderator could parcel
out mail to that address to appropriate "level two" moderators. Would
seem to be a way of getting more people up to (limited) speed quicker.
The other possibility is to see if news.answers can get some form of
commercial sponsorship such that someone could be hired/paid to get
the work done. This might even be done as a public service without
any expected "ad" tacked on; if I'm not mistaken, UUNet partially
subsidizes Tale's time for Usenet activities.
Let me emphasize that I respect and appreciate the work that the news.answers
team does. I just don't think the current process is successfully scaling
up to the current state of Usenet.
